Exploit an authentic speech

Teacher: Patricia Torralba

Student: Nadia Ponce
Subject: ECO
Date: 21-06-2016

This activity has been chosen to be delivered at the beginning of the lesson
with the purpose of activating background knowledge from students in a
funny and entertaining way (rather than giving them a list with the
vocabulary which they are going to use during the lesson).
The teacher will start the lesson saying that she found some pictures of
famous inventions. She will write the word inventions in the centre of the
board and she will stick the pictures around the word (telephone,
telescope, electronic light, television, radio, automobile and bicycle).
She will ask students some questions. This activity will also activate
background knowledge and elicit vocabulary, but in this case with the
purpose of creating the context for the lesson.
What inventions are these?
Why were they important?
In what way were these inventions useful for human beings?
Once student have answered the questions or made some guesses, the
teacher will show them the name of the inventors and she will ask
students to match the names with the inventions. In case they do not
know, the teacher will help them.
Finally, the teacher will ask learners and if they can think of two gripping
inventions to add on the board. The teacher should try to make all students
talk, but not by forcing them. Instead, just by inviting them to share their
answers. Moreover, she shouldnt correct students who make mistakes
since what is important in this activity is the content of the answers, not the
accuracy.

Guessing new words
Language: function words
Grammar: Past Simple

Predicting content:
The teacher will do a brainstorm with the learners. She will ask them if
they know who the inventor of the first personal computer is or if they
know who started Apple Company. Once students have answer the
question, the teacher will write the name Steve Jobs on the board and
she will ask learners if they know where he started with the Company, if
he did it alone and if students think he is an incredible man.
Listening for gist:
This activity is designed with the purpose of creating the need to watch
the video and listen to the conversation to get the general idea of what
happens in that situation. The teacher can explain that to solve this
activity it is not necessary to understand every single word. They should
concentrate only on understanding general meaning, and since it is a
video, they can get very useful information just by watching and paying
attention to body language and expressions.
The teacher will tell the class they are going to watch a video in which
Steve Jobs gives an inspiring speech and that she wants learners to
listen for the answer to two questions:
What does he describe in the speech?
What message is he trying to transmit?
Listening for detailed:
Students will be asked to watch and listen to the video again and
complete some sentences with a suitable word.
1) Jobs started Apple in his . (Parents

2) In ten years the company grew from just two of them into a
company. (2 billion)

Guessing new words:

The teacher will get students to play an interactive loops game to guess
the meaning of a few words.
The teacher will give each student or each pair or group one card. She
will ask students to read their cards. She will explain that any of them can
start the game by reading out the question on their card. Whoever
believes they have the answer reads it out from their card. If theyre right,
they then read out the question they have on their card. If they are not
right, someone else tries reading out their answer. The game is over as
soon as all the questions and answers have been read out.

My second story is about love and loss.
I was lucky I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents
garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of
us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4,000 employees. We had just released our
finest creation the Macintosh a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired.
How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone
who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so
things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a
falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very
publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.
I really didnt know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of
entrepreneurs down that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with
David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very
public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly
began to dawn on me I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed
that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.
I didnt see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could
have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of
being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most
creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar,
and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create
the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful
animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned
to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apples current
renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

Focus on writing
The aim in this activity is to develop the writing skills. This activity also
enhances the students creativity.
The teacher will ask students to create a biography on their own, using the
vocabulary they have learnt through the lesson and the Past Simple.
Students will have to think of a person from their country, find information
about him or her and make notes about:
1) His/her name, date of birth and place of birth
2) His/her education and work
3) Other important information about him/her
My biography of
1) Name, date of birth, place of birth
.was born in.in.
2) Education and work
When she/he wasshe/he. Then.
3) Other important information
.died in..

The teacher will monitor their work, and when they finish, they will pass
round their biographies for the other students to see it.
