ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Completion of my On-the-Job-Training hours

would not have been possible without the
cooperation of the City Government of
General Trias, which has accepted the
Memorandum of Agreement written by
Lyceum of the University Cavite Campus.
I would like to express my gratitude to
Sir Prijoles, without whom I would not have
been able to be placed within the
Engineering Office, and his words of wisdom
from his years of experience.
To Engr. Gemini Mancilla, the head of
the Engineering Office, who has provided
me with numerous opportunities to test and
improve my skills relevant to my respective
field of study.
And lastly, my thanks to the staff (---) of
the Engineering Office, who have, in small
but meaningful ways, made my experience
easier and productive, whose positive
attitudes have made the office environment
conducive to work, and they have shown me
what it's like to operate in practical
scenarios, teaching me that there's more to
engineering than just solving equations on a
piece of paper.

SUMMARY
The City Government of General Trias is a
government establishment tasked with the
administration of the municipality of General
Trias. The Engineering Office, part of the
company, is responsible for the approval of
plans, issuance of several permits, handling
bids, inspection of projects, and numerous
other tasks. My hours spent at the office has
taught me that certain aspects of the job
require meticulous attention to detail, since
a simple mistake would lead to the
revocation of the engineer's license, while
other tasks such as estimation has shown
me that such figures are extremely rough,
since it assumes that wasted material
cannot be used. Site inspections have
revealed small areas of work that are lax
with the regulations, at the same time I
have observed an air of professionalism
from most of the workers at the site, as their
appearance
might
have
suggested
otherwise. It was interesting and rather
gratifying to see up close the inner workings
of a structure, to be able to pick out
components only seen during Computer
Assisted Drafting beforehand. Drafting on

AutoCAD feels a lot smoother after having to

work with it for hours on end. All these tasks
and activities have shown me that practical
engineering work can be both simple and
complicated, and that it can greatly depend
on how you choose to deal with the matter
at hand.

INTRODUCTION
My On-the-Job-Training had taken place at
the City Government of General Trias Cavite,
where I was assigned to the Engineering
Department's Office, for the stated period of
two hundred fifty (250) hours. The learning
goals, as stated in the Learning Plan and
Evaluation, are the Improvement of
Efficiency in the operation of AutoCAD, the
Estimation of Project Costs, and the
Observation
of
Site
Management
&
Operations. The strategies involved for the
first goal was identifying the relevant
keystrokes and shortcuts to actions within
the
program.
The
second
involved
determining all possible components of the
project before attempting to formulate a
solution, as a single missed detail would
make a reiteration necessary. For the third
and final goal, it requires a keen eye and an
attentive mind, for one has to relate the

spoken information from the site engineer to

all the activities seen around the site. These
goals have certainly been achieved,
although some of it might not be
quantifiable, a great deal of knowledge has
been acquired in the process. Hours have
turned into minutes for most CAD sheets,
less papers have been wasted on writing up
estimates, and an appreciation for the onsite aspect of work has been gained. It's no
simple task, and indeed, it takes more than
just a couple of good people to get the job
done. Proper management is crucial to site
operations.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP
The City Government of General Trias
The City Government of General Trias is
tasked with the administration of the
municipality of General Trias;

INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES
Over the course of 250 hours, numerous
tasks have been assigned to me, a lot of
which were relevant to the field of Civil
Engineering, while the rest were small,
easily accomplishable tasks. The most
prominent one was drafting using AutoCAD,
of which two projects, a four storey twenty
classroom school and a bridge, were the
subjects for creation of a soft-copy.
Developing the sheets for these two projects
took up most of the hours at the office.
Estimating project costs was the second
most common activity, which required the
person handling said activity to determine

the amount of materials for the construction

of a project, as well as the associated cost
of the materials, factoring in the dimensions
and areas of certain objects or components.
Third, and the least common task, was the
Site Inspections, for notable reasons:
authorization of un-official personnel is
required,
site
inspections
often
are
scheduled in advance, limited number of
vehicles for transportation, and the lack of
immediate supervising personnel for OJT
trainees at the site of inspection. That being
said, the few times that I have accompanied
the staff of the Engineering Office at the
sites has been time well spent. Other, less
subject-related tasks include dealing with
paperwork, serving as a liaison for the office
staff when having to cooperate with other
departments
