TO THE OPERATOR

This operation manual is intended for the operator and maintenance personnel, and it
includes essential information and instructions on how to use the TANA landfill compactor.
The service life, operating costs, and reliability of the TANA landfill compactor are
dependent on how well the instructions given in this manual are followed.
Always keep the manual with the compactor. Read the manual carefully before operating
the compactor and before any servicing.
This manual is intended for TANA Gx260, Gx320, Gx380, Gx450, and Gx520 compactors.
The compactor model shown in the figures in this manual may differ from the customers
model.
The Gx260 model is equipped with a Cummins QSC8.3 engine. The Gx320, and Gx380
models are equipped with a Cummins QSM11 engine. The Gx450, and Gx520 models are
equipped with a Caterpillar C15 engine. The operator/service person must be familiar with
the compactor model in question and always follow the appropriate instructions for that
particular model. If the instructions do not include separate reference to a particular model,
the instruction applies to all models.

1.1.

Operators responsibility

During the warranty period, only persons authorised by TANA OY are permitted to carry out
adjustments of the control system, hydraulic units and diesel engine of the TANA landfill
compactor.
The TANA landfill compactor is intended for officially approved, controlled sanitary landfill
sites where no dangerous waste is present. For example, flammable or poisonous
substances or substances with a danger of explosion, or containers which have contained
such substances, are not to be handled with the compactor. Neither are hot substances,
which can be a fire hazard.
Appropriate operation and maintenance are essential for the reliability of the TANA
compactor. The warranty does not apply to damage caused by insufficient servicing,
misuse of the compactor, the use of lubricants or hydraulic fluids which are not in
accordance with the operation manual, or changing the aforementioned adjustments
without proper authorisation.
If anything is still unclear concerning the operation or maintenance of the TANA compactor
after reading this manual, please contact a designated representative or the service
department of TANA OY.

The diesel engine and hydraulic pumps produce sufficient volume flow for driving the
compaction drums, articulated steering, and dozer blade control. The driver controls and
operates the compactor from the cabin with an electronic control system. With its rigid steel
construction, the compactor is durable and sufficiently heavy to perform compacting and
crushing.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Most accidents during the machines operation are due to a disregard of safety regulations
and instructions. These situations can be avoided by anticipating possible hazards.
Improper use of the machine is dangerous and may cause permanent disability or death.
The basic safety instructions are specified in this chapter, and, where necessary, in the
chapters describing operation and maintenance.
Hazard signs are attached to the machine in places where disregarding warnings could
cause serious injury or death.
Since the machine manufacturer cannot anticipate every possible circumstance involving a
potential hazard, the warnings in this manual and the machines signs cannot be
exhaustive. If the machine is operated in a manner not in accordance with our
recommendations, the driver must ensure that the operation does not put the driver or
anyone else in danger and that the machine neither is damaged nor becomes unsafe.

3.1.

Warnings
Do not use the machine unless you have read and understood the
operation manual for the machine. A driver without the necessary
knowledge or concern is a hazard to himself and others.

Use protective equipment such as a safety helmet, protective shoes,

gloves, and hearing protectors.
Ensure that there are no people or vehicles in the operating area of the
machine while it is running. In particular, the articulation link and dozer
blades operating areas must be clear while the engine is running.
Notice that there is a blind spot behind the machine. Never reverse
unless you have ensured that the way is clear.

Get well acquainted with the landfill in order to avoid sinking in soft
places or sliding down slopes.

Do not climb into a moving machine. It is strictly prohibited to stay on

the deck or to get down from it while the machine is moving.

Always use the steps on the side of the machine when climbing onto or
down from the machine. Do not jump out of the machine.

Apart from the driver, no other persons are allowed in the cabin while
the machine is operating.

Before starting, make sure that there are no noticeable faults in the

8. Isolator switch
If the machine is parked for a longer period (over 2
hours), switch off the power with the isolator switch.
Leaving the isolator switch on will eventually drain
the batteries. Leaving the machine unattended with
the isolator switch turned off is important also for
safety reasons.
Never turn the isolator switch off while the engine is
running. Turning the isolator switch off while the
engine is running will damage the alternator and
modules.
The isolator switch must be turned off before
opening the electrical cabinet.

Hydraulic system

All operations of the TANA machine are based on hydraulics. The hydraulic system is
divided into two separate systems. They function independently of each other. The systems
have a common oil tank, return oil filter, and oil cooler.
Drive hydraulics (A)
The pumps for the drive hydraulics (2 pcs)
are mounted on the diesel engine. The
pumps produce oil flow and run the
hydraulic motors coupled to final drives
bolted to the end of the compaction drums.
The final drives serve to drive the
compaction drums.

Electric control and monitor system

The TANA landfill compactor is equipped with a decentralised total control system, which
controls the diesel engine, hydrostatic transmission, steering, and dozer blade hydraulics,
as well as their auxiliary functions. The system consists of three independent modules,
each of which controls different functions of the machine. In addition, the diesel engine has
its own control unit, which forms part of the total control system. The modules are
interconnected via a CAN bus (Controller Area Network), which is a fast and interferenceresistant data transmission bus.

4
1

CAN bus

The different functions of the machine have been divided among the modules as follows:
1. Display module
This serves as the drivers user interface; i.e. it displays the gauge functions. In addition,
the display helps one inspect the fault memory of the machine, and change and save
the settings of the machine. The last function requires entering a separate password.
2. Cabin module
This module incorporates features such as cabin control switches, control levers, etc.
3. Chassis module
The chassis module controls the hydrostatic transmission and the steering and dozer
blade hydraulics; it also serves as the interface for connecting sensors and switches in
the engine compartment.
4. Electronic engine control unit
The controls unit independently controls the operation of the diesel engine and transfers
data from the engines own sensors to the other control systems of the machine.

1. Transmission ON/OFF switch and parking brake status

The symbol is displayed when the transmission switch is off.
When the transmission switch is off and the engine is running, the control system keeps
the parking applied. When the transmission switch is turned to the ON position while the
engine is running, the parking brake is released and the symbol disappears (with delay).
The drive system is controlled by a pressure switch. The switch does not allow driving
the machine before the pressure in the drive system is sufficiently high, that is when the
parking brake symbol disappears. If the driver turns the driving lever while the symbol is
displayed, the machine will not move. Even if the symbol disappears when the lever is
turned, the machine will not move before the lever is turned back to the central position
and then to the drive position again.
If the pressure drops below the limit value, the machine will not move before the levers
are turned back to the central position. After that driving can continue. If the pressure
switch is out of pressure, i.e. the pressure is below the limit value (18 bar) for 10
seconds, the control system sets off an alarm.
The altitude information provided by the GPS system (optional) is displayed when the
parking brake is not engaged. The reading indicates the altitude from the zero point set.
2. TTC (Tana Traction Control) (optional)
TTC (optional) is an anti-slip system that tries to prevent the slipping of the drums
(skidding). The TTC system reduces the wear of the drums and fuel consumption and
makes driving easier.
The TTC is activated with switch S2 on the switch panel. When the TTC is activated, the
TTC symbol is shown in the display. When the anti-slip system intervenes in the control
of the drums or dozer blade, the symbol flashes. When the TTC is activated and one or
both drums slip, the TTC tries to adjust the control of the drums so that the slipping
stops. If adjusting the control does not work, the dozer blade is raised in order to stop
the slipping of the drums (skidding).

3. Speed range selector switch status

Indicates the selected driving speed:
tortoise = work speed,
hare = transport speed.
The driving speed range can also be changed while the machine is moving.
4. Engine speed
The engine must not be raced over 2,400 rpm, and the idle running speed must be over
800 rpm at all times.
NOTE! If the engine speed exceeds 2,400 rpm, the engine control unit will set off an
alarm. Stop the engine immediately and find out the cause of the malfunction. The
Caterpillar engine stops automatically if the engine speed is over 2,800 rpm. If
necessary, contact an authorised Cummins/Caterpillar service representative.
5. Operating hours
Registers the number of operating hours of the engine.
6. Charging current
Indicates the charging voltage. When the batteries are fully charged and the ignition is
switched on, the voltage is about 2425 V. When the engine is running, the voltage
should be 2728 V. If the voltage drops, check the alternator belts.
The control system triggers an alarm and restricts machine functions in the following
cases:
The voltage is below 22 V over 5 seconds while the engine is running: The
speed of the engine is limited to 1,200 rpm.
The voltage is above 29.5 V over 2 seconds while the engine is running:
The control system will set off an alarm.
The voltage is above 30 V over 2 seconds while the engine is running: The
control system will stop the engine.

7. Engine oil temperature (TANA Gx320 and Gx380)

Indicates the temperature of the engine oil. The range displayed is +20 C to +120 C.
NOTE! If the oil temperature exceeds +122 C (252 F), the engine's own control unit
will start to reduce the amount of fuel injected and hence cut 30% from the maximum
torque of the engine. Should this happen, stop the engine immediately and find the
cause of the malfunction. If necessary, contact an authorised Cummins service.

8. Hydraulic oil temperature

Indicates the temperature of the hydraulic system. The green scale displays +20 C
through +85 C.
The control system issues an alarm and restricts machine functions in the following
cases:
Oil temperature below -30 C: The speed of the engine is limited to
1,000 rpm, slow driving speed range.
Oil temperature below -20 C: The speed of the engine is limited to
1,200 rpm, slow driving speed range.
Oil temperature below 0 C: The speed of the engine is limited to
1,400 rpm, slow driving speed range.
Oil temperature below +20 C: The speed of the engine is limited to
2,000 rpm, slow driving speed range.
Oil temperature over +85 C: The speed of the engine is not limited, slow
driving speed range available.
Oil temperature over +90 C: The output of the driving pumps (machine
speed) is reduced to 75%.
Oil temperature over +95 C: The output of the driving pumps (machine
speed) is reduced to 50%.
In all the aforementioned cases, the alarm information (an alarm buzzer sounds and the
red alarm light is lit) supplied by the control system is saved in the fault memory. This
data can be checked on the alarm display.

TANA Gx260 - Gx520

Operation manual

38(107)

9. Engine coolant temperature

Indicates the temperature of the engine coolant.
The green scale is +60 C...+105 C.
If the coolant temperature rises too high, stop driving and leave the machine to idle for a
few minutes, which will cause the temperature to drop. Stop the engine and look for the
reason for the overheating - for example, a dirty radiator or too low a coolant level. Do
not continue working until the fault is rectified. Moreover, do not run the engine
continuously if the coolant temperature remains below +60 C since this can damage
the engine.
The Caterpillar engine shows an alarm if the coolant temperature rises over +110 C
(230 F) for 10 seconds.
If the coolant temperature exceeds +102 C (215 F) (Cummins) / +111 C (231 F)
(Caterpillar), the engine's own control unit will start to reduce the amount of fuel injected
and hence cut the maximum torque of the engine by 30%. Should this happen, stop the
engine immediately and find the cause of the malfunction. If necessary, contact an
authorised Cummins/Caterpillar service.
After stopping the engine, do not open the radiator cap before the

Control levers

Driving lever, left

When the driving lever is

in the central position, the
engine is idling. When
the lever is moved
forward, the engine
speed starts to increase
and simultaneously the
control flow of the pumps
for the driving hydraulics
is activated and the
machine starts to move
forward.

When the lever is in the extreme position, the engine runs at the maximum speed and the
machine moves at the maximum speed. When the lever is moved back toward the central
position, the machine stops; i.e. it also acts as a service brake. When the lever is moved
backward from the central position, the operations are exactly the same but the machine
moves backwards.
When one is driving at the maximum speed, the engine speed is, depending on the load,
between 1,900 and 2,200 rpm. The pumps feature automatic power control, which reduces
the machines speed when the load increases.

The driving lever only acts as a throttle lever when the power
transmission switch is in the OFF position.

Do not use the transmission switch unless the driving lever is the
central position and the engine is idling.

Steering lever, right

The machine is steered

and the dozer blade lifted
and lowered with this
lever. The dozer blade
bucket (optional) is
controlled with the switch
on the lever.

When the lever is turned to the left, the machine turns to the left. When the lever is turned to
the right, the machine turns to the right. When the lever is returned to the central position,
the steering angle of the machine remains the same. The machine is set straight by turning
the lever to the opposite direction.
When the lever is pulled backward, the dozer blade is lifted. When the lever is pushed
forward, the dozer blade is lowered. The bucket section of the dozer blade is lifted and
lowered by pressing the upper and lower part of the switch, respectively.

Avoid turning the machine when the machine is standing still. Turning
will unnecessarily load steering cylinders and the articulation link.
The turning angle of the machine is restricted by rubber cushioning mounted on the edges
of the service platform. Avoid unnecessary application of force to these rubbers. The
steering of the machine is also cushioned with the help of inductive sensor, which cut the
steering movement just before it reaches the extreme position. The inductive sensor give
the cut-off data to the steering system, which in this case returns the directional control
valve almost to the neutral position.

Lower the dozer blade fully before stopping the engine.

Check the lights and control devices

Check daily that the headlights and mirrors are in proper condition and that all displays
function properly. The operation of the controls has to be checked before entering the
working area. Report any faults in operation to the service department.
Perform the following inspections:
Switch on the isolator switch and turn the ignition on. The reading of the
voltage meter should be about 24...25 V.
When the engine is running, the reading of the voltage meter is about
27...28 V. However, it should not exceed 28.5 V.
Check that the hour meter operates while the engine is running.
Check that all displays are operational.
Check the alarm display log and establish that no alarms have remained
active. If they instead have, find out the cause of the warning and take the
appropriate actions immediately.

10. Check the hydraulic lines and components

If oil leaks occur, they must be repaired immediately. Oil leaks can cause damage and
create a fire hazard.
Use only original spare parts when replacing hoses, seals, and fittings, in order to ensure
that they fit.

Check the inspection holes at the ends of

the drums to check for possible leaks inside
the housings. If oil or other fluid leaks from
the hole, open the housing cover and verify/
repair the cause of the leak. The hole must
be checked and dried daily.

Check the scrapers, cable cutters, and drums

The drum teeth (1) and scrapers (2) are subjected to heavy loads. A daily inspection is an
important part of preventive maintenance.
If a scraper is bent, straighten it with a hydraulic press. A bent scraper can
cause damage to the drum when hitting the crushing teeth.
Remove any wire ropes and cables from around the drum and from the
drum ends.
Avoid driving over wire ropes and cables. Push them to a suitable spot with
the dozer blade and cover with other refuse before driving over them.
If damage in the drum is detected, inform the maintenance personnel
immediately.
The end plates of the drum prevent wire ropes from getting between the drum end and the
frame. The adjustable cable cutters also prevent the cables from getting to the end of the
drum, especially when the drum teeth are new. New teeth can have edges to which cables
become stuck easily.
Use correctly shaped, original wearing pieces for repairing the teeth. By doing this, you
reduce damage to the drum or frame. A wear piece for the foot that is too big or of the
wrong shape easily collects cables, stones, etc. and can thus cause, for example, damage
to the scrapers, the intrusion of cables between the drum and the frame, or even ruptures in
the drum shell.

Adjusting the scrapers

The scrapers and wire cutters, which are
against the end plate of the drum, can be
adjusted by loosening their retaining bolts.

2

10 mm

Adjust the scrapers when their distance to

the drum shell exceeds 25 mm. Adjust the
scrapers to about a 10 mm distance from
the shell. Rotate the drum slowly and readjust the scrapers if they touch the drum
shell.
NOTE! The drum shell is not completely
round!
The distance between the cable cutters
and the drum end plate should be about
3 mm.

Do not crank the engine for more than 10 seconds at a time, in order to
avoid damaging the starter motor. If the engine does not start during
the first 10 seconds, wait for 12 minutes before the next attempt.
The engine oil pressure must reach its normal level within 15 seconds
from start-up. If the low oil pressure alarm continues after 15 seconds
from starting, stop the engine and check the engine oil level.

Do not switch on the starter motor when the flywheel is rotating.

Cold start (ambient temperature below +6C)

Take care of the engine preheating. Use the engine and hydraulic oil heaters. The heaters
are available as an option.

Warming up the engine

Let the engine run at low speed (about 1,000 rpm) after start-up for about 810 minutes if
the temperature is less than 0 C or for about 35 minutes if the ambient temperature is
over 0 C. The turbocharger can be damaged if the engine speed is increased before
lubrication has properly started.
An engine that has reached its operation temperature should not be
allowed to idle for long periods. The temperature in the combustion
chambers can drop so low that the engine may be damaged.
Idling is limited; the engine stops automatically after 10 minutes (TANA
Gx260, Gx320, and Gx380 only).
Always stop the engine when leaving the machine!

Do not place load on a cold engine.

For more information, refer to the Cummins/Caterpillar instruction

manual.

Warming up the oil for the driving hydraulics

After a cold start, the oil in the hydraulic pumps and tank is cold. Let the engine idle until the
oil in the hydraulic tank and hydraulic pumps has warmed up and reached a suitable
viscosity level.
Recommended idling times:
Below 0 C: idling for 8...10 minutes.
Warm conditions: idling for 3...5 minutes.

Always use the electrical hydraulic oil heaters when the temperature is
below 0 C.
Since the oil in the hydraulic motors does not warm up when idling,
make sure you drive especially carefully at first when the weather is
cold.
When the engine is started, the following alarms may be displayed:
Hydraulic oil too cold.
Clogged charge pressure filter.
These alarms will disappear after a while. Should this not happen,
contact the service department.

Driving the machine

Fasten the seat belt!

Prior to moving the machine, ensure that there are no people or

vehicles in the operation area of the machine.

Turn the transmission switch (1) to the

ON position when the engine is idling, i.e.
when the driving lever is in the central
position.
Lift the dozer blade by pulling the steering
lever (2) backward.
Push the driving lever (3) slowly forward
to start the machine moving forward. At
first, drive slowly so that the machine
moves at a crawl for about 30 metres
without load. After this, you can increase
the engine speed and load gradually until
approximately the half-throttle position is
reached. The driving lever is then held in
the half-throttle position until the viscosity
of oil in the entire hydraulic circuit
reaches the correct level, i.e. the
hydraulic oil temperature exceeds +40 C
(ISO VG 46).
Recommended times for the half-throttle
position:
Below 0 C: about 15 minutes.
Warm conditions: about 5 minutes.

The above instructions must be followed even when the hydraulic oil
tank heater has been on, as the heater only warms up the oil in the tank.

Operation manual

79(107)

Avoid turning the machine when the machine is standing still. Turning
the machine at standstill loads the steering devices unnecessarily.
The machine is moved backwards by pulling the driving lever backward. The machine stops
when the lever is moved to the central position. The machines transmission system
prevents the machine from moving when the driving lever is in the central position.
Only the driving lever is used to control the direction, driving speed, and output of the
machine. The automatic adjustment of the driving hydraulics selects the highest suitable
volume flow (speed).
Most damage that occurs during the service life of the machine does not happen without
indications or warnings in advance. To reveal possible emerging damage, look and listen
for possible changes in the behaviour or sound of the machine. Also browse through the
alarm display daily and each time the machine sets off a new warning.
It is recommended to have a drivers log in the cabin. All the drivers observations, repairs,
possible malfunctions, etc., are written down in the drivers log. The causes of possible
malfunctions and so forth can be determined later and are often found more easily with the
help of the information in the drivers log.

Stopping the engine

Park the machine on level ground.

Move the driving lever (1) to the central
position and turn the transmission switch
(2) to the OFF position. The parking
brake is activated at the same time.
Lower the dozer blade (3).
Let the engine idle for 3...5 minutes
after loading to let the temperature
differences even out in the engine.
Stop the engine by turning the ignition
key (4) anti-clockwise.

If the machine is parked for a longer period (over 2 hours), switch off
the power with the isolator switch. Leaving the isolator switch on will
eventually drain the batteries. Leaving the machine unattended with the
isolator switch turned off is important also for safety reasons.
Never turn the isolator switch off while the engine is running. Turning
the isolator switch off while the engine is running will damage the
alternator and modules.

Operation techniques
If a TANA landfill compactor has not been operated at your landfill site
before, be especially careful in the beginning. The TANA machine
provides a high compacting power, and old refuse can still be
compacted a great deal. In addition, beware of the bank edges since the
refuse material may be especially soft there.
We recommend compacting the refuse on a level area in thin layers so
that the material is crushed and effectively compacted. If the refuse is
compacted on a slope, proceed as described above. Do not work
sideways on a slope since the refuse is resilient and makes it
impossible to estimate how much the machine will slant. The
recommended way to work on a slope is to spread the refuse down the
slope and back up the slope.
On a slope of more than 5, the working efficiency decreases and fuel
consumption increases. Do not work on a slope exceeding 20 because
refuse will start to slide under the machine and the danger of becoming
stuck will increase. In particular, avoid pushing the refuse down the
bank without compacting it, as this will in time create a steep bank of
uncompacted refuse.

Choose the working area so that there will not be any traffic during the
work.

Avoid driving over steel wire ropes or cables, or cover these first with
other refuse. They could twist around the drum and get into the gap
between the drum and the frame.
In addition, beware of pipes, steel bars, or long boards that can push
through the trash screen of the dozer blade and hit the window. Long
pipes and steel bars may become bent under the drum and then hit the
cabin or the drum hood, causing hazard or damage. To minimise these
hazards and consequent damage, the frame is designed to prevent
these situations.
The dozer blade equipped with bucket can be used as either a dozer
blade (bucket lifted) or a bucket (bucket lowered). If the dozer blade is
heavily loaded, the bucket section must be positioned at either extreme
position (up or down).

Running the engine in

Proper operation and servicing of the engine are key factors in

obtaining the greatest possible service life and cost-effectiveness.
The first hundred hours of operation are crucial to achieving a long service life for the
engine and its parts. While the engine has been test run at the factory, more operation
hours are required for the parts to settle into ideal position and for suitable clearances for
the lubrication films to form.

1. Operate the engine as much as possible at 3/4 output.

2. Avoid idling the engine.
3. Monitor the gauges and alarm lights closely during operation, and remember the normal
readings of the gauges.
4. Strictly follow the instructions in the Cummins/Caterpillar Operation and Maintenance
Manual.

6.8.

Running the machine in

Avoid abrupt accelerations and changes of direction that stress the transmission, especially
during the first 50 operation hours. Observe carefully the oil levels, temperature readings on
the display, and alarms.

FUELS AND LUBRICANTS

10.1. Engine
TANA Gx260
The engine manufacturer recommends the use of a high-quality 15W-40 multi-grade engine
oil that meets the API CG-4 or CH-4, or Cummins CES20071 or CES20076 requirements.

For more information, refer to the Cummins instruction manual.

TANA Gx320, and Gx380

The engine manufacturer recommends the use of a high-quality 10W-40 or 15W-40 multigrade engine oil that meets the API CH and Cummins CES20076 requirements.

API and CG engine oils can be used in areas where CH oils are not
available. This, however, affects the engine oil change interval.

For more information, refer to the Cummins instruction manual.

TANA Gx450, and Gx520

The engine manufacturer recommend the use of high-quality 10W-30 or 15W-40 engine oil
that meets the Caterpillar ECF-1 requirements.
The correct viscosity grade of SAE oil is determined on the basis of the
lowest operating temperature during the engine cold start, and the
highest operating temperature.

For more information, refer to the Caterpillar instruction manual.

TANA Gx260 - Gx520

Operation manual

D191108EN

91(107)

10.2. Diesel fuel

Cummins Engine Company Inc. and Caterpillar recommends the use of No. 2 diesel fuel
meeting ASTM specifications in order to ensure the best possible engine performance. If
the ambient temperature is below 0 C, acceptable performance is achieved by using a
mixture of ASTM 2D and 1D fuels.

Do not mix antifreeze with diesel fuel. This mixture can cause an
explosion.
Before starting to determine a reason for poor efficiency or poor
operation in cold air, check the fuel type being used.
If the fuel tank is filled partly, condensation can occur at cold
temperatures. Fill the fuel tanks after using the engine.

For more information, refer to the Cummins/Caterpillar instruction

manual.

Operation manual

D191108EN

10.3. Coolant
TANA Gx260, Gx320, and Gx380 (Cummins engine)
Heavy-duty engines require high-class coolant. A high-class coolant is a correct-ratio
mixture (50/50) of high-quality water and low-silicate antifreeze meeting the ASTM D4985
specifications, and containing supplemental coolant additives (SCA).

TANA Gx450, and Gx520 (Caterpillar engine)

Long-life Caterpillar coolant (ELC) must be used in the engine.

Final drive cooling (all models)

For cooling the final drives during summertime, coolant must be added to the drums. The
coolant is a mixture of high-quality water and antifreeze (ratio 90/10). The coolant must be
drained for wintertime use (ambient temperature below 0 C).

TANA Gx260 - Gx520

Operation manual

D191108EN

93(107)

10.4. Final drives

Use high-class synthetic gear oil:
CLP 220 according to DIN 51517,
Viscosity ISO - VG 220 according to DIN 51519.
Final drive oil is exposed to extreme temperature changes. For this reason, the oil has to be
sufficiently fast-flowing when starting so that the bearings will get their lubrication. However,
during the work, the hot oil has to be sufficiently viscous for the gears to be lubricated. For
this reason, a synthetic gear oil, such as SHELL Gear Oil HDS 220, must be used in the
final drives.

10.5. Hydraulic systems

The driving hydraulics and steering and dozer blade hydraulics share a common oil tank.
Use hydraulic oils that meet the following classifications:
HLP(HM) and HVLP according to DIN 51524, parts 2 and 3.
Viscosity classes
Viscosity grade ISO VG 10-100 (according to DIN 51519) is selected on the basis of the
operating temperature. A good operating range is 100 - 16 mm/s, while the ideal viscosity
is 36 - 16 mm/s. A limit value for cold start viscosity is 1,000 mm/s, and the lowest
permitted viscosity temporarily allowed at running temperature is 10 mm/s.
Acceptable oils for different operating temperatures are presented in the following table.
The normal operating temperature for oil for the driving hydraulics is 45 C above the
ambient temperature when the oil cooler is clean.

10.6. Lubricating greases

The following properties are required of grease used in the TANA compactor:

Withstands the prevailing temperature differences

Is water-resistant
Protects from dirt
Is anti-corrosive
Is resistant to pressure

Suitable greases for TANA lubrication points are lithium- and lead-based greases with an
EP additive and, preferably, also molybdenum sulphide. Grease consistency NLGI 2.

10.7. Central lubrication system

If a central lubrication system has been installed in the machine, NLGI class 00 lubricant is
used for initial filling. A softer grease, of NLGI classes 000...1, can be used during
wintertime and a harder grease, of NLGI classes 0...2, during summertime.

For more information concerning lubricants, see the manufacturers

DISPOSAL OF THE MACHINE

The end user of the machine is responsible for its disposal. If the end user has no
resources or opportunity for dismantling the machine, this must be carried out by an entity
with appropriate knowledge and skills for the task.
The following issues must be taken into consideration when disposing of the waste
resulting from dismantling the machine:
The machines frame, all steel components, and copper and aluminium
from the electric wires are recyclable. Metals can be melted and reused as
raw materials for new products, with the exception of components that
have been in contact with materials classified as hazardous waste.
Contaminated components can usually be cleaned/rinsed to make them
recyclable.
Most plastic components may be recycled in the same way as the metal
components. Each plastic component carries a material identification code
and manufacturing date with which the recyclability of the component can
be determined.
Rubber components are not regarded as hazardous, and they can be
disposed of using standard procedures. Hoses (for example, hydraulic
hoses) must be cleaned before disposal.
Windscreens and other cabin windows are not suitable for standard glass
recycling; they may be disposed of as normal landfill waste.
Electrical components classified as hazardous (batteries, circuit boards,
etc.) and other dangerous substances must always be delivered to an
authorised waste handler or be disposed of according to local regulations.
The air conditioners, which contain CFC and HCFC compounds, must
always be delivered to an authorised waste handler.
Fluids and lubricants must be collected in designated receptacles and
sorted. They must be disposed of through an authorised waste treatment
facility.
These instructions are not binding but are rather guidelines for good waste handling
practices. Local authorities will issue more detailed instructions and recommendations for
disposal of various materials.

In disposing of the machine, currently applicable appropriate local

waste handling regulations issued by the authorities are to be followed.
