SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Most accidents during the machines operation are due to a disregard of safety regulations
and instructions. These situations can be avoided by anticipating possible hazards.
Improper use of the machine is dangerous and may cause permanent disability or death.
The basic safety instructions are specified in this chapter, and, where necessary, in the
chapters describing operation and maintenance.
Hazard signs are attached to the machine in places where disregarding warnings could
cause serious injury or death.
Since the machine manufacturer cannot anticipate every possible circumstance involving a
potential hazard, the warnings in this manual and the machines signs cannot be
exhaustive. If the machine is operated in a manner not in accordance with our
recommendations, the driver must ensure that the operation does not put the driver or
anyone else in danger and that the machine neither is damaged nor becomes unsafe.
3.1.
Warning symbols
The warning symbols in this manual are used for emphasising especially important issues.

7. Service
Maintenance is essential for low operating costs.
The TANA landfill compactor requires regular
maintenance in order to remain in good operating
condition and retain optimal performance.
Preventive maintenance is the easiest and
cheapest form of maintenance.
Before starting, the driver must check all the points
mentioned in the daily maintenance instructions,
such as the amount of fuel and the oil levels.
Stop the engine and remove the isolator switch and
ignition keys before any maintenance or repair
work.
18(107)
D191108EN
8. Isolator switch
If the machine is parked for a longer period (over 2
hours), switch off the power with the isolator switch.
Leaving the isolator switch on will eventually drain
the batteries. Leaving the machine unattended with
the isolator switch turned off is important also for
safety reasons.
Never turn the isolator switch off while the engine is
running. Turning the isolator switch off while the
engine is running will damage the alternator and
modules.
The isolator switch must be turned off before
opening the electrical cabinet.
9. Lifting points
Only lift the machine from the lifting points. Use only
sufficiently strong chains that are designed for lifting
and have been checked for safety.

Hydraulic system
All operations of the TANA machine are based on hydraulics. The hydraulic system is
divided into two separate systems. They function independently of each other. The systems
have a common oil tank, return oil filter, and oil cooler.
Drive hydraulics (A)
The pumps for the drive hydraulics (2 pcs)
are mounted on the diesel engine. The
pumps produce oil flow and run the
hydraulic motors coupled to final drives
bolted to the end of the compaction drums.
The final drives serve to drive the
compaction drums.

The TANA landfill compactor is equipped with a decentralised total control system, which
controls the diesel engine, hydrostatic transmission, steering, and dozer blade hydraulics,
as well as their auxiliary functions. The system consists of three independent modules,
each of which controls different functions of the machine. In addition, the diesel engine has
its own control unit, which forms part of the total control system. The modules are
interconnected via a CAN bus (Controller Area Network), which is a fast and interferenceresistant data transmission bus.
4
1
CAN bus
The different functions of the machine have been divided among the modules as follows:
1. Display module
This serves as the drivers user interface; i.e. it displays the gauge functions. In addition,
the display helps one inspect the fault memory of the machine, and change and save
the settings of the machine. The last function requires entering a separate password.
2. Cabin module
This module incorporates features such as cabin control switches, control levers, etc.
3. Chassis module
The chassis module controls the hydrostatic transmission and the steering and dozer
blade hydraulics; it also serves as the interface for connecting sensors and switches in
the engine compartment.
4. Electronic engine control unit
The controls unit independently controls the operation of the diesel engine and transfers
data from the engines own sensors to the other control systems of the machine.

Control levers
When the lever is in the extreme position, the engine runs at the maximum speed and the
machine moves at the maximum speed. When the lever is moved back toward the central
position, the machine stops; i.e. it also acts as a service brake. When the lever is moved
backward from the central position, the operations are exactly the same but the machine
moves backwards.
When one is driving at the maximum speed, the engine speed is, depending on the load,
between 1,900 and 2,200 rpm. The pumps feature automatic power control, which reduces
the machines speed when the load increases.
The driving lever only acts as a throttle lever when the power
transmission switch is in the OFF position.
Do not use the transmission switch unless the driving lever is the
central position and the engine is idling.
52(107)
D191108EN
When the lever is turned to the left, the machine turns to the left. When the lever is turned to
the right, the machine turns to the right. When the lever is returned to the central position,
the steering angle of the machine remains the same. The machine is set straight by turning
the lever to the opposite direction.
When the lever is pulled backward, the dozer blade is lifted. When the lever is pushed
forward, the dozer blade is lowered. The bucket section of the dozer blade is lifted and
lowered by pressing the upper and lower part of the switch, respectively.
Avoid turning the machine when the machine is standing still. Turning
will unnecessarily load steering cylinders and the articulation link.
The turning angle of the machine is restricted by rubber cushioning mounted on the edges
of the service platform. Avoid unnecessary application of force to these rubbers. The
steering of the machine is also cushioned with the help of inductive sensor, which cut the
steering movement just before it reaches the extreme position. The inductive sensor give
the cut-off data to the steering system, which in this case returns the directional control
valve almost to the neutral position.

Check daily that the headlights and mirrors are in proper condition and that all displays
function properly. The operation of the controls has to be checked before entering the
working area. Report any faults in operation to the service department.
Perform the following inspections:
Switch on the isolator switch and turn the ignition on. The reading of the
voltage meter should be about 24...25 V.
When the engine is running, the reading of the voltage meter is about
27...28 V. However, it should not exceed 28.5 V.
Check that the hour meter operates while the engine is running.
Check that all displays are operational.
Check the alarm display log and establish that no alarms have remained
active. If they instead have, find out the cause of the warning and take the
appropriate actions immediately.
D191108EN

67(107)
The drum teeth (1) and scrapers (2) are subjected to heavy loads. A daily inspection is an
important part of preventive maintenance.
If a scraper is bent, straighten it with a hydraulic press. A bent scraper can
cause damage to the drum when hitting the crushing teeth.
Remove any wire ropes and cables from around the drum and from the
drum ends.
Avoid driving over wire ropes and cables. Push them to a suitable spot with
the dozer blade and cover with other refuse before driving over them.
If damage in the drum is detected, inform the maintenance personnel
immediately.
The end plates of the drum prevent wire ropes from getting between the drum end and the
frame. The adjustable cable cutters also prevent the cables from getting to the end of the
drum, especially when the drum teeth are new. New teeth can have edges to which cables
become stuck easily.
Use correctly shaped, original wearing pieces for repairing the teeth. By doing this, you
reduce damage to the drum or frame. A wear piece for the foot that is too big or of the
wrong shape easily collects cables, stones, etc. and can thus cause, for example, damage
to the scrapers, the intrusion of cables between the drum and the frame, or even ruptures in
the drum shell.

At the beginning of each work shift, perform the daily maintenance for the machine and
ensure that it is in faultless condition and that there are no inappropriate objects near the
rotating parts or touching them. Checking helps prevent large-scale repairs later.
Also check that all of the hoods, covers, and housings are locked and correctly in place.
Do not start the engine or move any controls if there is a sign on the
machine with Do not operate or a similar warning.
The engine exhaust gas is harmful to your health. Use the engine only
in a well-ventilated area. If the engine is used indoors, the exhaust
gases must be conducted outside.

Do not crank the engine for more than 10 seconds at a time, in order to
avoid damaging the starter motor. If the engine does not start during
the first 10 seconds, wait for 12 minutes before the next attempt.
The engine oil pressure must reach its normal level within 15 seconds
from start-up. If the low oil pressure alarm continues after 15 seconds
from starting, stop the engine and check the engine oil level.

Always use the electrical hydraulic oil heaters when the temperature is
below 0 C.
Since the oil in the hydraulic motors does not warm up when idling,
make sure you drive especially carefully at first when the weather is
cold.
When the engine is started, the following alarms may be displayed:
Hydraulic oil too cold.
Clogged charge pressure filter.
These alarms will disappear after a while. Should this not happen,
contact the service department.
78(107)
6.4.
D191108EN
The above instructions must be followed even when the hydraulic oil
tank heater has been on, as the heater only warms up the oil in the tank.
D191108EN
79(107)
Avoid turning the machine when the machine is standing still. Turning
the machine at standstill loads the steering devices unnecessarily.
The machine is moved backwards by pulling the driving lever backward. The machine stops
when the lever is moved to the central position. The machines transmission system
prevents the machine from moving when the driving lever is in the central position.
Only the driving lever is used to control the direction, driving speed, and output of the
machine. The automatic adjustment of the driving hydraulics selects the highest suitable
volume flow (speed).
Most damage that occurs during the service life of the machine does not happen without
indications or warnings in advance. To reveal possible emerging damage, look and listen
for possible changes in the behaviour or sound of the machine. Also browse through the
alarm display daily and each time the machine sets off a new warning.
It is recommended to have a drivers log in the cabin. All the drivers observations, repairs,
possible malfunctions, etc., are written down in the drivers log. The causes of possible
malfunctions and so forth can be determined later and are often found more easily with the
help of the information in the drivers log.
80(107)

D191108EN
If the machine is parked for a longer period (over 2 hours), switch off
the power with the isolator switch. Leaving the isolator switch on will
eventually drain the batteries. Leaving the machine unattended with the
isolator switch turned off is important also for safety reasons.
Never turn the isolator switch off while the engine is running. Turning
the isolator switch off while the engine is running will damage the
alternator and modules.

Operation techniques
If a TANA landfill compactor has not been operated at your landfill site
before, be especially careful in the beginning. The TANA machine
provides a high compacting power, and old refuse can still be
compacted a great deal. In addition, beware of the bank edges since the
refuse material may be especially soft there.
We recommend compacting the refuse on a level area in thin layers so
that the material is crushed and effectively compacted. If the refuse is
compacted on a slope, proceed as described above. Do not work
sideways on a slope since the refuse is resilient and makes it
impossible to estimate how much the machine will slant. The
recommended way to work on a slope is to spread the refuse down the
slope and back up the slope.
On a slope of more than 5, the working efficiency decreases and fuel
consumption increases. Do not work on a slope exceeding 20 because
refuse will start to slide under the machine and the danger of becoming
stuck will increase. In particular, avoid pushing the refuse down the
bank without compacting it, as this will in time create a steep bank of
uncompacted refuse.
Choose the working area so that there will not be any traffic during the
work.
Avoid driving over steel wire ropes or cables, or cover these first with
other refuse. They could twist around the drum and get into the gap
between the drum and the frame.
In addition, beware of pipes, steel bars, or long boards that can push
through the trash screen of the dozer blade and hit the window. Long
pipes and steel bars may become bent under the drum and then hit the
cabin or the drum hood, causing hazard or damage. To minimise these
hazards and consequent damage, the frame is designed to prevent
these situations.
The dozer blade equipped with bucket can be used as either a dozer
blade (bucket lifted) or a bucket (bucket lowered). If the dozer blade is
heavily loaded, the bucket section must be positioned at either extreme
position (up or down).
82(107)
6.7.
D191108EN
6.8.
Avoid abrupt accelerations and changes of direction that stress the transmission, especially
during the first 50 operation hours. Observe carefully the oil levels, temperature readings on
the display, and alarms.

10.1. Engine
TANA Gx260
The engine manufacturer recommends the use of a high-quality 15W-40 multi-grade engine
oil that meets the API CG-4 or CH-4, or Cummins CES20071 or CES20076 requirements.
API and CG engine oils can be used in areas where CH oils are not
available. This, however, affects the engine oil change interval.

Do not mix antifreeze with diesel fuel. This mixture can cause an
explosion.
Before starting to determine a reason for poor efficiency or poor
operation in cold air, check the fuel type being used.
If the fuel tank is filled partly, condensation can occur at cold
temperatures. Fill the fuel tanks after using the engine.

10.3. Coolant
TANA Gx260, Gx320, and Gx380 (Cummins engine)
Heavy-duty engines require high-class coolant. A high-class coolant is a correct-ratio
mixture (50/50) of high-quality water and low-silicate antifreeze meeting the ASTM D4985
specifications, and containing supplemental coolant additives (SCA).

The end user of the machine is responsible for its disposal. If the end user has no
resources or opportunity for dismantling the machine, this must be carried out by an entity
with appropriate knowledge and skills for the task.
The following issues must be taken into consideration when disposing of the waste
resulting from dismantling the machine:
The machines frame, all steel components, and copper and aluminium
from the electric wires are recyclable. Metals can be melted and reused as
raw materials for new products, with the exception of components that
have been in contact with materials classified as hazardous waste.
Contaminated components can usually be cleaned/rinsed to make them
recyclable.
Most plastic components may be recycled in the same way as the metal
components. Each plastic component carries a material identification code
and manufacturing date with which the recyclability of the component can
be determined.
Rubber components are not regarded as hazardous, and they can be
disposed of using standard procedures. Hoses (for example, hydraulic
hoses) must be cleaned before disposal.
Windscreens and other cabin windows are not suitable for standard glass
recycling; they may be disposed of as normal landfill waste.
Electrical components classified as hazardous (batteries, circuit boards,
etc.) and other dangerous substances must always be delivered to an
authorised waste handler or be disposed of according to local regulations.
The air conditioners, which contain CFC and HCFC compounds, must
always be delivered to an authorised waste handler.
Fluids and lubricants must be collected in designated receptacles and
sorted. They must be disposed of through an authorised waste treatment
facility.
These instructions are not binding but are rather guidelines for good waste handling
practices. Local authorities will issue more detailed instructions and recommendations for
disposal of various materials.
