1.0 ABOUT THIS README FILE
--------------------------IBM ServerGuide reduces the complexity of server deployment by
detecting installed options and providing device drivers. The

ServerGuide wizard detects the server model and installed

adapters; then, the wizard guides you through setup,
configuration, and network operating system (NOS) installation.
2.0 ServerGuide Architecture versions
-------------------------------------There are three versions of IBM ServerGuide available from the WEB:
o IBM ServerGuide Setup and Installation i386
- Supports the installation of 32bit Windows Server operating systems
to IBM System x and BladeCenter servers.
- Supports the installation of 64bit Windows Server 2008 that is on a
special disc containing both 32bit and 64bit Windows Server 2008 images.
o IBM ServerGuide Setup and Installation x86-64 for Windows Server 2008 and 200
3
- Supports the installation of 64bit Windows Server 2008 and 2003 in either
legacy or native uEFI mode to IBM System x and BladeCenter servers.
- Automatically detects whether to install in legacy mode or native
uEFI mode depending on the server's settings.
o IBM ServerGuide Setup and Installation x86-64 for Windows Servre 2012 only
- Supports the installation of 64bit Windows Server 2012 in either legacy
or native uEFI mode to IBM System x and BladeCenter servers.
- Automatically detects whether to install in legacy mode or native
uEFI mode depending on the server's settings.
Note: The correct architecture version of ServerGuide must be used to
install the desired architecture version of the Windows Server operating
systems.
The supported systems for three versions of IBM ServerGuide are listed
in IBM ServerGuide page, refer to section 7.0 of this readme.
3.0 SUPPORTED RUNNING MODE
--------------------------3.1 CD/DVD Installs Support
o ServerGuide supports to be burned into a CD/DVD. Then you can boot a system f
rom
the ServerGuide CD/DVD for Windows Operation System deployment.
3.2 USB Installs Support
o ServerGuide supports to be burned into a USB key. Then you can boot a system
from
the ServerGuide USB for Windows Operation System deployment.
o ServerGuide USB is able to automatically load external device drivers which a
re

stored in the folder "SGDEPLOY\ExtraDrvs\ALL" in the USB. Here the format of

the
device driver must be raw date files which looks like *.inf, *.sys or *.dll.
o ServerGuide USB supports to deploy OS source tree which are stored in the sub
folder
of the folder "SGDEPLOY\OS" in the USB.
o USB Install Limitations:
- When user intend to install Windows Server 2008 using ServerGuide USB with
bundled
OS source, user need to ensure the boot option "USB storage" is after "Hard
Disk 0"
and "CD/DVD Rom" in the boot order setting of UEFI.
o Instructions for burning ServerGuide into a USB key:
1 Insert a USB key in the system.
2 Open a command prompt.
3 Use diskpart.exe to format the USB key as a single FAT32 partition spannin
g
the entire key, and set the partition to active, as shown in this example.
diskpart
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32 quick
assign
exit
4 Copy ServerGuide files from ServerGuide ISO to the USB key.
3.3 Remote Installs Support
o Remote Installs are supported using the Remote Supervisor
Adapter II (RSA II), Integrated Management Module (IMM),
BladeCenter Management Module (MM), and BladeCenter
Advanced Management Module (AMM).
o Remote Install Limitations:
- For MM only, the left button mouse function doesn't
work with a single click. The workaround is to use double click to
to do selections in ServerGuide graphical user interface.
- The same CD/DVD Drive used for ServerGuide CD needs to be use
for Windows CD/DVD.
o Instructions for running ServerGuide via remote disk feature:
NOTE: These directions are written for RSAII/AMM/MM. Steps to install via
recently updated AMMs and iMMs may differ slightly.
1 Install Java(TM) Plug-in and disable cache for Web Browser Java plug-in
to enable remote console to work.
2 Connect to the RSAII, MM,or AMM Web Management Interface (via Web browser
)

6.0 LIMITATIONS
---------------The following limitations are applicable to this version of IBM
ServerGuide:
o One final reboot is recommended to finish hardware installation after the
Windows installation completes. For instance, yellow exclamation marks may
be present on the Intel(R) Ethernet Mezzanine Adapter due to the device
driver being unable to start. This issue is resolved by a reboot.
o A yellow exclamation mark may be present next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
when there is no physical internal DVD drive connected. Despite the warning,
the device is still functioning properly.
To solve this problem,
from uEFI setup, change the mode from AHCI to IDE as below.
* Goto uEFI setup (F1)
* System setttings
* Device & I/O Ports
* Configure the onboard SATA <Select IDE>
* Save and reboot.
o When using ServerGuide in a multi-node server configuration, the
server summary report screen does not indicate a multi-node
configuration. However, the number of processors reported will
be consistent with the hardware.
o ServerGuide does not support installing to any USB storage device.
o When using a MegaRAID controller in System x3850 M2/System x3950 M2 for the
onboard drives, all RAID configurations need to deleted before any attempt to
use the LSI SAS 1078 onboard controller with the same onboard drives.
o When installing to drives attached to an IBM iSCSI Server TX adapter (30R5201
),
you may not be able to create a 100 GB partition. The workaroud is to create
a
partition of a different size (eg 110 GB).
o On x3850 M2 and x3950M2, the Microsoft IPMI device driver is required and is
the only supported IPMI driver. In Windows 2003, the Microsoft IPMI device dr
iver
is only supported on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2.
To install the Microsoft IPMI driver on an installation of Windows Server 200
3 R2:
1) In Control Panel, select Add or Remove Programs.

2)
3)
4)
5)

Select Add/Remove Windows Components.

Select Management and Monitoring Tools and press the Details button.
Choose the Hardware Management option.
Press the OK button to select the Hardware Management Component,
and then press the Next button.

o All iSCSI adapters require Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 or higher for the driv
er
to function properly.
o All Fiber channel adapters require Windows 2003 Service Pack 2 or higher for
the
driver to function properly.
o Service Pack 1 or higher is recommended for Windows Server 2003 installs on
System x3105. Installs done without a Service Pack will complete, but two yel
low
warnings are in the Device Manager under 'Other Devices':
PCI Memory Controller
SM Bus Controller
o Partitioning screen appears to hang
When using ServerGuide to partition disks of 300 GB or larger, the partitioni
ng
may take 15-20 minutes for the process to complete.
o RAID configuration for LSI-SAS adapters
For LSI 1064/1064e/1078 SAS controllers or an IBM SAS HBA controller and LSI
1020/1030 SCSI ServerGuide is unable to remove any logical volumes including
RAID arrays on the adapters due to the limitation of the adapters.
To avoid any problems with RAID configuration, use the Ctrl+C menu on system
POST prior to using ServerGuide to remove all logical volumes.
o Critical Error during RAID Configuration of adapter LSI 1078 SAS IR on the
x3850 M2/x3950 M2
For the LSI 1078 SAS IR controller, the total number of disks in a RAID array
cannot exceed six. To avoid any problems with RAID configuration of the LSI
1078
SAS IR controller, reduce the number of disks to six or select the RAID Defau
lts
option of ServerGuide instead of a specific RAID level.
o Critical Error during RAID Configuration
While performing RAID configuration on adapters with previous raid configurat
ions,
the process may fail with a critical error.
To resolve this problem, click back and retry the RAID configuration or click
Exit to restart the server and retry ServerGuide installation.
o "No operating system found" during Windows installation
When performing a Windows installation, ServerGuide attempts to install Windo
ws
to the first disk on the system presented by the diskpart command line utilit

o ServerGuide does not support the use of the following iSCSI Server Adapter (7
3P3601).
o The Brocade 8Gb Single and Dual Port fibre adapters (46M6049 and 46M6050) are
only
supported as data drives. OS installations through these adapters are not sup
ported.
o A yellow exclamation mark may be present on a "Memory Module" in the Device
Manager after installing Windows Server 2008 when using the maximum amount
of memory supported with that version of Windows. This occurs as a result of
memory mapped devices. Despite the warning, the device is still functioning p
roperly.
Refer to the Cause section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605 for more
information.
o When performing a Windows 2008 installation, the "Where do you want to instal
l
Windows?" screen may appear during the Windows Setup portion of the installat
ion.

Press "Next" on this screen to continue with the installation since ServerGui
de
has already formatted and partitioned the drives. Performing any formatting o
r
partitioning at this screen could cause the OS installation to fail.
o 3GB SAS expander kit may cause "IBM ESXS SAS EXP BP SCSI Enclosure Device" to
show up in Windows Server 2003 Device Manager with a yellow question mark if
the firmware is lower than revision 0.58. Please run the latest UXSP for your
system, or at minimum install the firmware found at the following link so the
expansion adapter shows properly in Device Manager:

To sucessfully install Windows Server 2003 to a system with a fibre adapter,
you must use Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2.
o When performing a Windows Server 2008 installation, ServerGuide does not dist
inguish
between a Windows Server 2008 x86 disc and a Windows Server 2008 x64 disc dur
ing the
"Search OS Media" step. If the wrong version of Windows Server 2008 is insert
ed then
ServerGuide will attempt to perform the installation and fail.
o When installing to a drive that previously used GPT partitioning the operatin
g system
installation may fail. This failure is caused by an incomplete cleanup of the
drive by
Diskpart. To resolve this issue restart the system and retry the Windows inst
allation.
o A popup may be displayed while ServerGuide is running stating "You must resta

and continue the installation with ServerGuide.
o Windows Server 2003 Installs with a 49Y4220 or 42C1780 iSCSI adapter will
fail without one of the following Microsoft hotfixes:
1) Hotfix for x86 32-bit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957910
2) Hotfix for x86 64-bit : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943295
When installing with the iSCSI adapter present but not intended as the boot
device, the hotfix can be run after the Windows installation to allow the
device driver to start, and remove the yellow exclamation marks in device
manager. If the Windows installation will be done to storage connected to
the 49Y4220 or 42C1780, the hotfix must be slipstreamed into your OS files
or the installation will not complete. Please refer to the following
knowledge base article for slipstream help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814847
Hints and tips for this hotfix:

1) Use the entire contents of the Windows Server 2003 disc, rather than
copying just the i386 directory.
2) In step 9 it is recommended that you add to the new information to the
existing svcpack.in_ rather than deleting it and creating a new file.
If you choose to create a new file, it must be name svcpack.in_,
not svcpack.ini. The information in the [Version] field must also match
the version of Windows you are using for your installation, not the
information shown in the article.
3) The article pertains to Windows 2000 Server and Server 2003 32-bit
installations, so the steps are slightly different for the 64-bit
slipstream process. For instance, substitute the AMD64 directory
wherever the article uses the i386 directory.
o When installing Windows 2003 without Service Pack 2 included,
the "Everyone" group does not have the same permissions it would have if a re
tail

o ServerGuide may present a message stating that there was an internal error wi
th
"savestat /reset" on some uEFI systems with older uEFI versions. To prevent t
his,
make sure your uEFI levels are updated to the latest version. If the error i

completion of the OS installation.
o When using ServerGuide to perform RAID configuration, a best practice is to
ensure that all the disks connected to the RAID controller are the same size.
o While performing a Windows installation you might encounter the following err
or message:
"Windows cannot locate the disk and partition specified in the unattend answe
r file's
<ImageInstall> setting". This error can occur for different reasons including
the
installation drive having previously been formatted as a GPT drive or having
a
different OS previously installed on the system.

To resolve this issue, first restart the system and retry the Windows install
ation.
If this does not resolve the issue then delete all partitions and formatting
on the
drives in the system and retry the Windows installation. If this does not res
olve the
issue, and the system has multiple storage adapters,
please see the next limitation for additional steps to try.

evaluating the battery for replacement.
o For the installation of Microsoft Windows for Storage Area Network (SAN) boot
,
there can be unexpected results when the storage, which the Windows Operating
System (OS) will be installed, is presented with multiple paths to one or mor
e hosts.
To avoid this problem, configure only one path to the storage that is used fo
r the
installation of Windows OS and disconnect all other active paths.
For more information, refer to Retain Tip H207009.
o When booting ServerGuide USB key with legacy mode, the Installation may faile
d with
the following message: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or
locate
an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
It may
be due to the Option(such as RAID) ROM isn't completely loaded.
To avoid this problem, there are two options as follows.
1. Set the option ROM execution order higher in the "Set Option ROM Execution
Order"
setting of UEFI.
2. Disable the Adapter Option ROM support which doesn't need to be loaded in
the OS

boot phase in the "Enable/Disable legacy ROM execution" setting of UEFI.
