Information for Candidates

This practice paper follows the Edexcel Syllabus.
The standard booklet Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables may be used.
Full marks may be obtained for answers to ALL questions.
The marks for the parts of questions are shown in round brackets, e.g. (2).
There are 7 questions in this question paper.
The total mark for this paper is 100.
Advice to Candidates
You must ensure that your answers to parts of questions are clearly labelled.
You must show sufficient working to make your methods clear to the Examiner.
Answers without working may not gain full credit.
Non exact answers should be given to an appropriate degree of accuracy.

Question 1

(****)
2m

0.56 m

1.92 m
C

The points A and B are 2 m apart and lie on a fixed horizontal ceiling. A particle C ,
of weight 100 N , is suspended by two strings from A and B , so that AC = 0.56 m
and BC = 1.92 m as shown in the figure above. The particle hangs in equilibrium.
a) Show clearly that ACB = 90 .

( 2)

b) Calculate the tension in each of the two strings.

(7)

The particle is next suspended by two different strings from A and B , so that
AC = 0.8 m and BC = 2.5 m .
The particle still hangs in equilibrium.

c) Show further that the tension in the string AC is 100 N .

Question 2

( 3)

(****+)

At time t = 0 , a particle is projected vertically upwards with speed U from a point A .

The particle moves freely under gravity.
The point A is at a height 8H above the ground, where H is the greatest height
reached by the particle above A .
Find, in terms of U and g , the total time from the instant of projection to the instant
when the particle hits the ground.

Question 3

(***+)

wire

100 N

800 N

A thin rigid non uniform beam AB of length 6 m and weight 800 N has its centre
of mass at G , where AG = 4 m . An additional weight of 100 N is fixed at A .
The beam lies in a horizontal position supported by a rough peg at C , where
AC = 1 m , and a light inextensible wire attached at B .
When the wire is inclined at an angle to the horizontal, where sin = 0.8 , the beam
remains horizontal, in limiting equilibrium.
Calculate the tension in the wire and the value of the coefficient of friction between
the peg and the beam.

Question 4

(****+)

B
C
A

Two particles A and B of respective masses m kg and 1 kg are attached to the ends
of a light inextensible string which passes over a smooth pulley P . The particle B is
attached to a third particle C of mass 9 kg by another light inextensible string. The
three particles are held at rest, with A in contact with a horizontal floor, and the
portions of the strings not in contact with the pulley vertical. The system is released
from rest and C begins to accelerate towards the floor with the tension in the string
BC being 50.4 N .
a) For the period before C reaches the floor, calculate
i. the acceleration of the system.
ii. the tension in the string that connects A and B .
iii. the value of m .

(9)

C reaches the floor 1.5 s after release and does not rebound. In the ensuing motion
A does not reach P and B does not reach the floor.

b) Determine the greatest height of A above the floor.

Question 5

(****+)

A car is travelling on a straight horizontal road, starting from rest from a set of traffic
lights at A , accelerating uniformly to a speed 20 ms 1 , in 30 s .
The car maintains this speed for 74 s when it uniformly decelerates at 1.25 ms 2 ,
coming to rest at the next set of traffic lights at B .
a) Sketch a speed time graph for the motion of the car between A and B .

( 2)

b) Find the distance from A to B .

( 2)

A motorcycle leaves A , 3.5 s after the car left A .

The motorcycle is accelerating uniformly at a ms 2 overtaking the car at the point M ,
where M is the midpoint of AB .
c) Determine the value of a , correct to three significant figures.

Question 6 (****+)

Relative to a fixed origin O , the horizontal unit vectors i and j are pointing due east
and due north, respectively.
At noon a ship A is at the point with position vector ( 2i + j) km and travelling with
constant velocity ( 4i 7 j) km h 1 .
a) Calculate the speed of A

( 2)

At noon ship B is at the point with position vector (10i 3j) km and travelling with
constant velocity ( 2i + 5 j) km h 1 .
b) Determine the bearing at which B is travelling.

( 2)

c) Find an expression for the position vector of A relative to B .

( 4)

The distance between the two ships, t hours after noon is d km .

d) Show clearly that

d 2 = 180t 2 240t + 160 , t 0 .

(4)

e) Calculate the times when the two ships are 10 km apart.

(5)

f) Determine the shortest distance between the two ships.

Question 7 (****)

5 ms 1
B
A

Three small spheres A , B and C , all of equal radius, have respective masses 0.9 kg ,
0.6 kg an 0.1 kg . The three spheres are placed on a smooth incline plane as shown in
the diagram above.
Sphere A is projected from the foot of the plane up the plane with speed 5 ms 1
while spheres B and C are released from rest at the same time as A was projected.
The planes inclination is such so that any of the spheres moving freely on it,
experiences an acceleration of 2.5 ms 2 down the plane.
Any collisions that take place are instantaneous.
a) Given that A and B collide 0.4 s after A was projected and they coalesce
when into a single particle P , determine the velocity of P after the collision.
(7)
b) Given that P and C collide 0.6 s after A and B collided and they coalesce
when into a single particle Q , determine the velocity of Q after the collision.
(7)
c) Find the distance from the foot of the plane that Q first comes to rest.
