Many thanks to Gillian Barlin for the lovely photos in the

keen to get lots of good quality, local interest photographs
for our cover. So send your entries to the editor - photos
should be high resolution (300dpi) jpegs in portrait format.

Dear friends.
When I was growing up getting a model
aircraft kit for a birthday was considered to
be a good present. I loved them but, for
some reason, they didnt like me. They
required me to be meticulous and careful; I
was neither. They required me to read
instructions and follow them but I preferred
to just stick them together because I knew
better. What? Paint the pilot before putting
him in the cockpit? Why, that would take
weeks and I only had one hour. There were
always bits left over and there were always
tears and tantrums. My dad invariably took
over and brought the ill fated project to a
conclusion.

The society we live in applauds success

and rewards those who do well. But it
excoriates those who fail by bullying or
verbally crucifying them on Twitter or
Facebook and, if they are public figures, in
the press or on television. At the same time
most individuals would recognise the value
of failure. Strange, arent we? It seems to
me that before pointing the finger at others
we should always remember our own
journey, our own failures and victories as
well as those who mentored us. Peter the
Apostle was always putting his foot in it,

Bramley Primary School Rated Good by Ofsted

Just before the Easter break, Ofsteds
team arrived at Bramley C of E
Primary School and carried out its
long-anticipated inspection. To the
great delight of everyone in Bramley
connected with the school, the final
overall rating was Good. The School
Leaders are delighted that the report
reflects the relentless focus on
securing good progress for all pupils,
that high expectations (for staff and
pupils) have created a culture in
which all are expected to strive to do
their best and recognises the strong
team who work closely together to
improve outcomes for pupils.
Teamwork and high aspirations for
the childrens learning have ensured
that teaching has improved and
pupils standards have risen.
In an interview with the Bramley
Magazine, Miss Hodgkinson and Mr
Moore, the Head and Deputy,
commented that the inspection was a
very positive experience. They felt
that the judgement was reflective of
the dedication and determination
consistently demonstrated by the staff
to do the very best for the pupils at
Bramley. The report states that pupils
are happy and they enjoy school.
They have very positive attitudes and
want to do well.

Page 8

The Ofsted team took into account all

of the comments made by parents,
both informally on the playground and
through the on-line parent view
survey. In a letter to parents Miss
Hodgkinson wrote, It is heartwarming to know that the hard work
and effort that has been put into
driving the school forward is
recognised and appreciated. Ms.
Nicky Parker, the Chair of Governors,
assured parents in the letter that staff
and governors would not be resting
on our laurels. We know there is still
plenty more work to do; and we know
we can rely on your support in our
quest to become an outstanding
school. It is clear that the School is
committed to giving the children at
Bramley C of E Primary School
exceptional learning opportunities
and to build on all of the successes
that have been achieved.

Loddon Valley Link Grant Award

The Loddon Valley Link is a church and
village magazine that serves the community
within the local distribution area by
providing local information, news and
articles which are both informative and of
general interest. The committee has
decided to take this involvement one step
further and offer a limited number of grants
to organisations that are, but not limited to,
those involved with youth groups, sports or
senior citizens. In making an application the
following criteria apply:-

The organisation must be charitable

or voluntary.

The organisation must be within the

magazine distribution area.

The request must be for a specific

item or event.

The request would generally not

exceed 200

It must be shown in the

application how the request will
benefit the community involved with the
organisation.
Any request should be submitted either by
email or in writing to the committee
secretary Ilene Iles (see back of magazine
for details) by 5th August at the latest. It is
hoped a number of awards will be made,
but this is dependent on applications. The
committee will make the final decisions and
all applicants will be informed of the
outcome. Names of those successful will be
printed in the September edition of the
magazine. There is no appeal for
applications that are not approved.

Management Committee.

First to go in is the combine with header

fingers which goes through the crop and
takes the grain off leaving the stem of the

Turgis Court Farm in Stratfield Turgis is

one of the largest growers and suppliers of
thatching straw in the country. Around 300
acres each year are grown. Two types of
straw are grown, Triticale and Marris
Widgeon. These are the preferred crops
because of the length and strength of the
straw they produce.
It all starts in early September when the
fields are ploughed and cultivated. The
seed is then sown into the ground using a
corn drill. The seeds quickly germinate and
the plants grow quickly so in a few weeks
there will be a nice green covering across the
fields. As winter comes along the crops
become dormant until the spring. In March
and April when the soil temperatures warm
up and the daylight hours get longer the
crops begin to grow again. It is now that
fertilisers and plant nutrients are applied and
weeds and diseases are monitored. The crop
will grow on through its growth stages; by
June will have grown to its maximum length
and will have produced an ear of grain at the
top. In July the crop will start to die off and
the grain will harden. At the end of July the

straw behind.
Next the straw harvesters will cut, clean and
bundle the straw. The bundles are then
strapped into bales which are stored in the
barns.
When the thatcher needs the straw it
will be delivered to site. The thatcher
will open the bales and give the
bundles a final clean and trim. The
bundles are taken up and laid using
spars to fix the straw to the roof. The
spars are hazel sticks twisted in the
middle to create a large spring staple.
For a small cottage around three
tonnes of straw would be needed. A
straw roof can last 25 years. Mike,

Litter Warden Vacancy

The next Full Parish Council meeting is

on 13 July at 8pm in the Liddell Hall.
This is a later start time as, for the next
few months, the Planning Committee
will meet immediately before Full
Council at 7.30 pm (also in the Liddell
Hall). Please check the parish
noticeboards or the website for the
agendas which are posted before the
meetings.

Although Basingstoke and Deane

Borough Council has undertaken to
clear the litter bins the parish council is
still hoping to find a new litter warden.
The vacancy is for 6 hours a week but
you will need to be over 16 to apply.
Contact the Clerk for further details.

Summer Tennis Camp

Totally Tennis will be running coaching
sessions at the parish tennis courts
again this year, subject to sufficient
interest. They will be held in the week
commencing 15 August with a session
at 9am for 4 to 7 year olds, followed by
an hour for over 8s at 10am. Please
contact Totally Tennis on 01256 358816
to book a place.
Annual Allotment Competition
The judging of the allotments has been
arranged for Wednesday 20 July.

Disposal of Dog Waste Bags

You have probably seen the new dog
waste stations where waste bags are
available. Unfortunately some dog
owners are using the bags, but not the
bins. Hanging used dog bags on
fences, trees, etc, is unsightly and
potentially harmful to the environment.
It is much more difficult to clear bagged
waste if it is not in the bins provided.
Please keep the village clean and tidy.

CONVERSION PROJECT
The SPCA plans to go out to tender for the
construction phase of this project before the
end of June. Were adding a first floor with
two new rooms, a toilet and kitchenette with
two separate stairways for access. This will
greatly increase the buildings space, for
hire for a wide variety of functions, whilst
also generating some much-needed
revenue. Depending on the response from
building contractors, the construction work
should start by autumn this year. This is a
big job that will inevitably impact on life at
the Community Centre, but well make
every effort to find practical workarounds to
keep disruption to a minimum during this
key phase of work. To find out more, look

Glenda then introduced our Speaker for the

Flying with the Royal Family. The Group
Captain informed us that he spent 37 years
in the R.A.F. and 2 years (1989-1991) with
the Royal Flight, which is sadly no more.
His job was to arrange all the Royal Flights
and liaise with the principal passengers.
Over the two years, he flew 400 flights with
all the principal and senior members of the

Older people set to benefit from new community grant

Local care at home provider Bluebird Care
is to make its first ever community grant.
250 will be made available to the
community group or initiative that works
with older people within Basingstoke and
Deane Borough or Hart District, and that
can best demonstrate a need for additional
support. As well as 250 the group will also
receive support and advice from Bluebird
Care. Director Phil Miles observes that
without the work of community groups who
organise coffee mornings, day-trips or lunch
clubs, many elderly people would be left
isolated at home.We want to work with a
local project that gives older people an
opportunity to try something new, such as
gardening, leisure, recreational, help with

The new grants scheme will be launched on
Friday June 17th and will remain open for
applications until Friday 29th July. For more

Notes
Anti Social Behaviour:
The four reports of ASB were a decrease of
six reported incidents over the previous
month.
Burglaries:
The dwelling burglary relates to an incident
where offenders climbed on to a roof of a
property and jemmied open a second
storey window. They carried out an untidy
search and stole jewellery and a laptop.
Suspicious Incidents:
There was nothing to concern me about the
increase in these reports. Suspicious
incidents do not necessarily indicate a
crime, but we would rather receive the call
in case it turns out to be something serious.
Indecency
There were indecency offences in Sherfield
on Loddon due to a male exposing himself
over the last month. Through enquiries we
have established that the male involved who

was working in the area.
He was arrested and
charged with numerous
offences and has also
been sacked from his
employment. Since then there have been no

Forty Years On

Borough Councillors Update

David Leivesley
I would like to begin my article by paying
tribute to the late David Leivesley.
Davids work in the community of Sherfield
Park changed peoples lives for the better.
It has been said before, but sometimes it is
the little things in life that make everything
better. Yet these little things all need
someone to make them happen. David was
the person who made lots of things happen.
He was passionate about turning a new
housing estate filled with an eclectic group
of strangers, none of whom knew each
other, into a community that had identity
and a feeling of drive and ambition. Above
all he wanted to make Sherfield Park
somewhere that people loved to live, not
because of the usual estate agent clichs,
but because it had a beating heart.
His vision to see where we could get to, at
a time when there were only a handful of
families living in Sherfield Park, was
remarkable, and his drive and tenacious
character turned that vision into reality for
all of us. The Sherfield Park Community
Association was formed by a group of those
early residents to look after the promised
Community Centre. There were many
bumps and hurdles along the way, but
when David was elected Chairman, the
momentum was unstoppable. With his
upbeat attitude and resolute determination
David squashed those bumps and hurdles.
People would say to him you dont give up,
do you? to which he replied Why would I?
Its not right.
Perhaps the surprising part of Davids
character to those who had not met him,
was that this tenacity, determination and
refusal to accept the status quo, was
delivered with warmth, friendliness and
compassion, alongside a keen sense of
humour and ready smile.
Sherfield Park has much to thank David for;
the post box that we were told would never
come, the benches and bins that we walk
past without asking how they got there and
Page 42

the thriving hub of our fledgling

development, our Community Centre. The
newly formed Sherfield Park Parish
Council was also instigated and driven
forward by David.
Parish Council
I am so delighted to hear that Sherfield
Park Community Association will be naming
the new wing of the Community Centre
after David, in tribute to a great man who
did so much for our community. We are
now reaping the benefits of his foresight
and determination.
I would like to wish the new Parish Council
and its councillors every success for the
future. I look forward to our new Parish
Council working closely with our thriving
Community Association in the best interests
of our community.
Im always eager to hear from residents
with any issues or comments. Just email or
phone me - I need your feedback and input
to represent all residents.
I attended the planning appeal hearing on
Dixon Road and spoke against the
application for three gypsy caravans with
associated day rooms. This application had
previously been rejected by Basingstoke &
Deane Borough Council planning authority.
The appeal lasted two days and on the final
day we attended the site with the
government inspector where more
questions were asked and comments
made. I would also like to acknowledge the
residents from Fernhill Place who attending
the appeal hearing and put forward their
case for refusal with calm, dignified and
sound reasoning. We now await the
government inspectors decision.

At the recent mayor-making

ceremony in Basingstoke
Councilllor Marilyn Tucker
was presented with a bunch
of flowers to mark 40 years as
Borough Councillor. The
outgoing mayor, Councillor
Anne Court, wanted to mark
the occasion in this way.
Marilyn (for whom the
presentation was a complete
surprise) said Im very lucky
to have such a lovely rural
area to represent. I didnt get
on to the council for politics, I
just wanted to help people.
Its wonderful the residents keep voting for
me.

We extend our congratulations to Marilyn

on her remarkable achievement.
