Editorial
Welcome to the July edition of the Link.
This months highlights include an absolutely fascinating article on
thatching and growing thatching straw, important local industries given
the number of thatched cottages in our villages.

The Borough Councillors update from Elaine Still includes a tribute to the

forty years as a Councillor.
Our summer events are well under way. We have a picture
report of last months Sherfield-on-Loddon Village Fete.
Many thanks to Gillian Barlin for the lovely photos in the
report and the cover picture. We are now looking forward to
Sherfest in Sherfield Park in July and Sherfield & District
Show in September. As Simon said last month September
may seem a long way off but it will soon be here. A
reminder that the Loddon Valley Link has a best cover
photograph competition awarded at the show. Were very
keen to get lots of good quality, local interest photographs
for our cover. So send your entries to the editor - photos
should be high resolution (300dpi) jpegs in portrait format.
Please keep your photos and articles coming in to:-:
editor@loddonvalleylink.org.uk.
The new church room is a light modern space with kitchen and toilet facilities.
Suitable for meetings or childrens parties!

Dear friends.
When I was growing up getting a model
aircraft kit for a birthday was considered to
be a good present. I loved them but, for
some reason, they didnt like me. They
required me to be meticulous and careful; I
was neither. They required me to read
instructions and follow them but I preferred
to just stick them together because I knew
better. What? Paint the pilot before putting
him in the cockpit? Why, that would take
weeks and I only had one hour. There were
always bits left over and there were always
tears and tantrums. My dad invariably took
over and brought the ill fated project to a
conclusion.

straw behind.
Next the straw harvesters will cut, clean and
bundle the straw. The bundles are then
strapped into bales which are stored in the
barns.
When the thatcher needs the straw it
will be delivered to site. The thatcher
will open the bales and give the
bundles a final clean and trim. The
bundles are taken up and laid using
spars to fix the straw to the roof. The
spars are hazel sticks twisted in the
middle to create a large spring staple.
For a small cottage around three
tonnes of straw would be needed. A
straw roof can last 25 years. Mike,
Steve & the team.

Glenda Holder, our President for the June
Meeting, welcomed everyone; in particular
she welcomed Evelyn Holdaway and Lyn
Chivers back on to the Committee.
Business was conducted and Members
were informed that our Centenary Tree has
been planted beside the path over the
Village Green. A formal ceremony will take
place in the near future to include all
Members when a plaque will be placed with
the tree.
Glenda then introduced our Speaker for the
afternoon, Group Captain David
Greenaway, O.B.E., R.A.F., Retired, whose
talk, illustrated with slides, was entitled
Flying with the Royal Family. The Group
Captain informed us that he spent 37 years
in the R.A.F. and 2 years (1989-1991) with
the Royal Flight, which is sadly no more.
His job was to arrange all the Royal Flights
and liaise with the principal passengers.
Over the two years, he flew 400 flights with
all the principal and senior members of the
Royal Family 100 of those flights were
with Princess
Diana, for whom
he had great
admiration. He recounted many anecdotes
and showed slides of his time spent with
the Royal Flight, which he felt very
honoured and privileged to have enjoyed.
Glenda gave the vote of thanks and a
discussion was held on arrangements for
our July Meeting an Indoor Street Party
and Celebration of Her Majesty the Queens
90th Birthday.
A lovely tea followed and the raffle was
drawn.

Spring Pond Garden in Laverstoke. Spring
Pond is a small private garden on alkaline
soil designed by garden designer Ian
Mylles, and created since 1995 by Carolyn
Sheffield. The garden surrounds a flint and
brick house converted from a group of
derelict farm buildings, designed by the
architect, the late Francis Johnson.
Anyone interested in gardening will be most
welcome to join us at our meetings in the

The next outing is to Lymington and Bartonon-Sea on Wednesday 13th July which will
be followed on Thursday 11th August by a
Horse Drawn Barge trip on the Kennet and
Avon Canal. If you would like to join us on
either of these please contact Kate
Lambeth on 01256 328791. The next
meeting is on 6th July at which Michael
Wells will be giving a talk detailing the work
done by the charity Canine Partners.
The group meets on the first Wednesday of
each month at Brookvale Village Hall from
10 am to 12 noon and all retired Civil
Servants and their partners are welcome.
