SYSTEM PRESENTATION
Product Concept and Key features
Product
Elegance 52 SX is a standard curtain walling based system with structurally
clamped glazing, offering a flush surface appearance. Ideal for transparent, contemporary building design and construction.
Characteristics
A minimalist appearance is achieved through the absence of any externally visible
profiles and an uniform narrow spacing between the glass panels. Opening lights
can be perfectly integrated without compromising these design aspects. Wide range
of profile depths are available to cover significant spans and heavy glass loads.
The drainage solutions ensure water tightness under most of the demanding climatic conditions. The system fully complies with International standards.
Profiles
The aluminium profiles have a construction width of 52 mm.
Mullions
The mullions consist of a tubular profile with drainage channels, grooves to retain
glazing gaskets and a nose channel to retain the dedicated clamping profiles.
The profile chamber can accept an aluminium or a standard galvanized steel tube
reinforcement.
Mullion depth
18 mm - 207 mm
Transoms
The selection of transom profiles depending on the inertia required related to the
loads imposed (glass, wind and horizontal deadload). If required, the inner face
of the transom can be flush with the inner face of the mullion.
Transoms depth
6 mm - 182.5 mm
Elegance 52 SX - KESXAL.1
Clamping elements
The clamping elements are located in the space between the panes created by
a recessed spacers. The continuous concealed clamping elements are fixed by means
of stainless steel screws into the nose channel of the base structure with a distance
of 250 mm maximum. Screws are fixed with a torque between 4.0 - 5.5 Nm for mullion
and 8.0 - 14.0 Nm for transoms to guarantee an optimum clamping of glass and/or
panels.
Surface treatment
Available finishes include anodising and polyester powder coating. Application is
carried out through a Qualicoat /Qualanod certified applicator.
Thermal insulation
A continuous gasket (EPDM chemically compatible with weather silicone) is clipped
on the clamping profiles in order to seal the space between the glass panes and act
as a thermal barrier. The remaining space of 22 mm is filled with neutral silicone which
acts as a first thermal barrier and ensures the water tightness of the curtain wall.
Connections
The assembly is carried out depending on the selection of mullion and transom profile
and in accordance with the instructions of the system supplier. Possible T-connection
techniques are following:
screwed connection extruded T-connector spring T-connector
moulded T-connector (available only for Horizontal Line)
Each connection technique requires the appropriate sealing accessories.

Product Concept and Key features
Glazing
Glass with thickness of 28 up to 36 mm and insulated panels can be integrated. The
panes of the double glazed unit are structurally bonded to one another.
The concealed pressure plate gaskets are always identical in depth as the inner
surface of the glazed infill is on a consistent plane.
The inside glazing gaskets are selected according to the thickness of the glazing infill
and sealed with mastic at the connection point.
Special glazing gaskets are used for facetted curtain walls with inner- and outer angle
up to 93 (one sided).
Drainage and ventilation
The system allows following connection principles between the horizontal and vertical
profiles:
notched transom screwed onto plain mullion
notched transom screwed into recessed mullion
straight cut transom mounted between the mullions (available only for Horizontal
Line).
The selected drainage method, should be in accordance with the test reports and
manufacturing instructions of the system supplier. With the exception of the Horizontal
Line solution, the system is mullion drained. Sufficient aeration has to be incorporated
for the purpose of effective drainage.
At the bottom of the curtain wall an EPDM-membrane is installed behind the inner
drainage level in order to evacuate all drainage water.
Thermal Movement
At a temperature difference of 40C a thermal expansion movement of 1 mm/m
is to be taken into account for the aluminium profiles.
In case of notched transoms screwed into plain (or recessed) mullions the thermal
movement of transom is accommodated through slotted fixing holes and EPDM
sealing pieces at the end of the transoms.
In other cases the thermal movent of transoms must be accomodated by means
of split mullions.

PRELIMINARY NOTE
Basic information about glass units
In the EL52SX system, the insulating glass units differ compared to the conventional
units, as the glazing spacer is positioned further into the unit, creating a continuous
recess between the inner and outer panes around the unit, allowing the inner pane
to be mechanically fixed.
The outer pane is structurally sealed to the inner pane using a load bearing sealant.
Beside this, it is a conventional insulated glass unit and therefore the glass production
guidelines are applicable.
Mechanical fixing takes place by means of pair of continuous aluminium clamping profiles, each fitted with a glazing gasket. These are screwed into the mullion and transom
nosing, securing the inner pane of the insulated unit directly to the curtain wall grid.
The thickness of the glass depends on:
dynamic wind pressure
glass characteristics, dimensions and locations
For the optimum aesthetic we recommended the use of black glazing spacers. We also
recommend the perimeter edges of the external panes to be arised to create a clean
and crisp appearance.
The internal glazing gasket may vary, depending on the thickness of the internal glass
pane. They must be cut over length by approximately 2% to allow for shrinkage, and
be cut at 90 and sealed together using butyl mastic.

G2 (6 - 12 mm)
For the load-bearing insulating glass seal, UV resistant products such as Dow
Corning DC3362, SIKASIL IG-25 (or similar) must be used. The width of the silicone
bonding is at least 16 mm. The production requirements for respective silicone sealant
manufacturer must be carefully respected to by the glass unit manufacturer, including
the pre-treatment of contact surfaces.

Before installation, please ensure the glass type and thickness complies with any
regulatory requirement or standards. Your glazing supplier will be able to assist in
determining the correct glass for your needs.

MAINTENANCE
Installation / Post Installation
Mortar, plaster etc. must be immediately removed from all painted or anodised
surfaces by washing down with warm water containing a mild detergent, taking care
not to scratch the surface. Stubborn marks may be carefully tackled with a renovating
cream and non-abrasive cloth. It is recommended to test on a hidden or inconspicuous
area first to ensure satisfaction with result.
On no account are Alcohols, Esters or Ketones or other Organic solvents to be
used, nor are polishes containing hard abrasives.
Modern powder coatings applied to architectural aluminium are similar to the types
used on motor vehicles and therefore require the same degree of care and attention
that people typically lavish on their car bodywork. The frequency of cleaning relates
directly to the decorative standard that the householder wishes to maintain and also
the particular environment where the units are situated.
Ongoing Care
All products should be washed down with warm water containing a mild detergent at
least once a year. In areas where airborne contaminants are more concentrated than
usual - near the sea, around swimming pools, or in place where in industrial air pollution is a known hazard - the products should be cleaned every three months or more
frequently if requested by the powder coat manufacturer for that specific location.
Painted surfaces that become marked should be treated as above. Scratches or chips
may be touched in by brush using a colour matched paint - Sapa can supply small
bottles of paint to match the stock colours it uses i.e. RAL9910 Hipca White, BS08B29
Van Dyke Brown and RAL9005 Black. Cleaning and maintenance must be carried out
in accordance with the powder coat manufacturers specification.
Anodised surfaces that have become heavily contaminated may be restored by gently
rubbing them with a Scotchbrite pad then drying off with a soft cloth. Application of
a lanolin based cream after cleaning will give added protection.
Foiled surfaces may be touched up using the correct pens available from Sapa
Building Systems Limited.
Elegance 52 SX - KESXAL.1
Powder Coatings are organic coatings that need to be cleaned and maintained
regularly to ensure that the decorative and protective properties of the coating
are retained. The frequency of cleaning depends upon the environment in which
the coating is in service.
Cleaning of the coating is an important part of the routine maintenance of any building.
It is for this reason that we advise that only companies who specialise in this type
of work are used for large cleaning operations.
The best method of cleaning is by regular washing of the coating using a solution
of warm water and mild detergent. All surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth
or sponge, using nothing harsher than natural bristle brushes (cleaning of window
sections etc. can be conveniently carried out at the same time as glazing cleaning).
If the atmospheric pollution has resulted in heavy soiling of the coating, then nothing
harsher than white spirit should be used for cleaning. Do not under any circumstances
use strong solvents or solutions containing chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters, ketones,
abrasive cleaner or polish.
The frequency of cleaning depends in part on the standard of appearance that
is required and also the requirements to remove deposits that could, during prolonged
contact with either the powder film or the metal substrate, (if exposed) cause damage.
In hazardous environments the normal frequency of cleaning should be at a maximum of three monthly intervals. However where there is high atmospheric pollution
or an extremely hazardous atmosphere (i.e., a combination of factors above or others)
the period between cleaning should be reduced.
Where the atmosphere is deemed to be non hazardous, e.g., rural or a normal urban
environments, then the period between cleaning can be extended up to a maximum
of 18 months. However, if heavy soiling occurs more regular cleaning is required.

CE MARKING
Introduction
CE marking indicates that a product conforms to legal requirements in specific EU
technical standards known as harmonised EU Norms (hEN). It enables a product to
be placed legally on the market in any European member state. However, regulatory
requirements may differ from country to country.
CE marking procedures were covered before by the Construction Product Directive
(CPD). From 1st of July 2013 the new Construction Product Regulation (CPR) enters
into force replacing the CPD.
From this date CE Marking becomes mandatory.
X.2.1
ENCLOSURES
CE MARKING
Fabrication Production Control
Factory Production Control (FPC) is the process control exercised by the manufacturer to ensure that the reported product performance characteristics are kept.
The manufacturer is responsible for carrying out the FPC. The manufacturer shall
have available personnel, and adequate installations and equipment, to perform the
function. The manufacturer shall set up a documented control system in accordance
with the product type and the conditions of manufacture. The level of documentation shall be decided by the manufacturer, but shall reflect the fulfilment of essential
processes of production. Production control features shall include some or all of the
following issues:
The responsibility, authority and relationship between personnel that manage,
perform or verify work affecting product performance
Measuring, testing and manufacturing equipment is to be appropriately maintained and calibrated where necessary
Specification and verification of raw materials and constituents
Production controls and tests to be carried out during the manufacture in accordance with a frequency laid down by the manufacturers production control system
Verifications and tests to be carried out on finished products/components in
accordance with a frequency laid down by the manufacturers production control
system
Description of actions of non-conformity/corrective actions
The FPC must be seen as an overall process covering the whole organisation whereby in case of the use of the system suppliers test results and directives care is taken of
the project related subjects or tests. In such a way the type testing and FPC directives
are , when necessary complemented with supplementary testing, or calculations in
line with EN specifications and applicable for the specific project situation.
The results of FPC shall be recorded, evaluated and maintained for 10 years.
One important CPR requirement for the manufacturer is to prepare a document called
Declaration of Performance (DoP). By drawing up a DoP the manufacturer assumes
responsibility for the declared performances.
So besides the specific factory environment related points in the control document,
also directly product related items should be checked. In order to make a relevant and
practical control system we have indicated and marked in this manual the items that
as a minimum should be checked during the fabrication process.
In the assembly drawings of system manual the items that should be included in the
FPC are marked with a specific symbol:
Elegance 52 SX - KESXAL.1
The indicated items are of high importance to insure that the final product meets the
declared performance. This does not mean that other points in the assembly manual
should not be checked on regularly bases. The manual must at all times be followed
exactly as described by the system holders specifications.
The DoP document shall be prepared when the product is placed on the market (in the
accepted language of the Member State in which the product is intended to be placed
on the market). Products of the same batch which are supplied to a single user can
be accompanied by a single DoP copy. Manufacturers can supply the customer with a
copy of the DoP either in paper form or by electronic means. When requested by the
customer, a paper copy must be supplied.

The performance (level / class / description) of at least one essential characteristic
Essential characteristics with no declared performance, the letters NPD (no
performance determined)
Name and id number of the involved notified body(ies) if applicable
Declaration of responsibility and signature
According to the CPR the manufacturer is obliged to declare as a minimum the performance of one essential characteristic. Where the manufacturer wishes to declare
a lower performance than the one reached during testing, or no performance at all
(NPD No Performance Determined), for an essential characteristic they are allowed
so to do.
The DoP must be retained by the manufacturer for a period of 10 years after the construction product is placed on the market.
Elegance 52 SX - KESXAL.1
Manufacturers shall, as the basis for the DoP, draw up a technical documentation
report describing all the relevant elements related to the required system of AVCP.
This report shall contain:
The reports of test or other assessment methods (calculation) demonstrating
the performance of the products for all the essential characteristics the manufacturer intends to declare, and the system of verification performed by a Notified Body
(AVCP system 1 or 3) or by the manufacturer (AVCP system 4).
The sample testing made under the initiative of the manufacturer.
If manufacturers is using Cascading or Sharing, it is important to prove within
the technical documentation that the product they placed on the market is in line
with the product which was tested during Type Testing or Type Calculation either
by the system provider or the manufacturer accordingly. For this purpose keeping
detailed Factory Production Control records according to the relevant harmonised
standard(s) is highly recommended, to prove accuracy, reliability and stability of
those test results. Documentation given by the system provider (Cascading) or
the manufacturer who tested the product (Sharing) to the manufacturer shall be
accompanied by authorisation for the documentation to be used. Those records
are also to include: Registry of complaints, of non-conforming products, and of
product recalls, and the corrective measures implemented to prevent recurrence
of non-conformities.
Technical documentation shall be retained by the manufacturer to enable them to
demonstrate the conformity of the construction product with the declaration of performance, should a reasoned request be received from a competent national authority
responsible for market surveillance.
The relevant technical documentation must be kept by the manufacturer for a 10 year
period together with the DoP, after the construction product is placed on the market.

THERMAL CALCULATIONS
Calculation of thermal transmittance - principles
To calculate the thermal transmittance of the curtain wall we use the component assessment method as described in EN13947:2006
This method divides the representative element into areas of different thermal properties, e.g. glazing units, panels and frames.
By area weighting the U-values of these elements with additional correction terms describing the thermal interaction between these elements (psi-factor),
the overall facade - value can be calculated:
Ug, Up
Uf, Um, Ut
t,g ,m,g ,t,g ,p
m,f ,t,f
