Lesson Cycle (5E Model)

Lesson Title/Topic: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Standards:
112.20. Science, Grade 8
(8) Earth and space. The student knows characteristics of the universe. The student is expected
to: (A) describe components of the universe, including stars, nebulae, and galaxies, and use
models such as the Herztsprung-Russell diagram for classification;
Lesson Objectives:
TSW classify stars based on their color and
temperature of a constellation with 80% accuracy.

Assessment (Evaluation):
Complete- HR Diagram
Complete- Connect-the-dot constellation

Materials:
LCD projector
Computer
Stars ppt
HR Diagram
Color Designation and the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram pdf
25 sheets black construction paper
300 Index cards
Glow-in-the-dark paint (blue, yellow, white, orange, red)
500 count Q-tips

The teacher will:

Focus (Engagement):
Question for students: Think about what you already
know about the universe. Ask students to do an
inside/outside circle, where they share their knowledge
with partners. Afterward, give students the
opportunity to share their ideas with the whole class.

Teacher Input (Explanation & Elaboration):

The teacher will review with students the information
they listed on board.

Micro-Teach #3

The student will:

Participate in Inside/Outside Circle.
Respond to questions.
List answers on board.
Watch video.

Discuss with students additional information from

video:
Nuclear Fusion
Luminosity
Apparent brightness

Discuss additional information that

need to be included on the board from
focus video.

Provide students with an outline of the Powerpoint.

Have students watch additional information:
Tell students to take notes on star colors and sizes.
What color are the cooler stars?
How hot are the blue stars?

Students take notes in notebooks,

Respond to questions from ppt,

Present details of using Star Classification ppt

Review the key components Star Classification ppt
Guided Practice (Exploration):
Review the key components of Herztsprung-Russell
diagram using HR Stars.ppt.

Assign students a partner using Standup, fist bump,

pair-up. (not at the same desk).

Students will watch for the following

terms:
Nebula
Hydrogen to Helium
Protostar
Main Sequence
Red Giant
White Dwarf

Discuss the background (directions) with students

within groups to complete the HR Diagram

Find partner using Standup, fist bump,

pair-up. Keep track of who you bump.

Answer #12 with students.

Work within teams to complete the HR

Diagram.

During the flash presentation, discuss the different

stages of star evolution.

Independent Practice (Evaluation):

Students will be separated into five (5) groups, but
each student will complete the assignment.

Closure:
Students will participate in the snowball activity.

Options:
Enrichment:
Students measure the color and brightness of stars in the
Jewel box Cluster from a color image. They will
determine the age of the cluster by plotting their
measurements in a color-brightness diagram.

Micro-Teach #3

Students write down what things they

learned on a piece of scratch paper and
wad it up. Given a signal, they throw
their paper snowballs in the air. Then
each learner picks up a nearby response
and reads it aloud.

Reteach:
Identify the area a student needs
remediation. Work individually with
students to understand terms used in
Herztsprung-Russell diagram.
Demonstrate how a lightbulbs
brightness it determined by the
wattage. Describe how stars

brightness/temperature are similar to

the watts used light bulbs.
Modifications:
Follow IEP of individual students
