New 2016 Business Management Guide (First exam 2016)- Mock Exams Preparation
NOTE: A FORMULA SHEET IS PROVIDED FOR EXAMS BUT NOT THE FORMAT OF PROFIT
AND LOSS ACCOUNT AND BALANCE SHEET

HL Paper 1 is based on a pre-seen case study. This is the case study that your teacher
has teacher has helped you prepare in class. Note that for the New 2016 Guide, the
same case study will not be used for May and November examinations. For the
current session your Paper 1 case study is Todos Os Mercados (TM). The same case
study is used for Business Management SL. Make sure that you are familiar with the
case study so that unnecessary reading can be avoided during your exams.
o Duration of paper: 2 hours and 15 minutes for HL. For SL, Paper 1 is 1 hour
and 15 minutes.
o HL Paper 1 is divided in 3 sections, while SL Paper 1 has 2 sections only.
Section A- Answer 2 out of 3 questions. The questions are of a basic
level and you might be required to describe, state, identify,
explain. There is no discussion type of question in section A, hence,
no balance required.
Section B- This is made up of an unseen material linked to your Paper
1 case study. This section is compulsory (no choice of question). In this
section, you have basic questions as well as 1 higher order question.
The higher order question requires discussion implying that there is a
need to balance your answer. Also, a judgement/conclusion is
compulsory.
Section C [THIS IS ONLY IN THE HL PAPER 1]- This is made up of an
unseen material. This part assesses only higher order thinking with a
20 marks question requiring evaluation. Balance is compulsory as
well as a judgement/conclusion. NOTE THAT THIS 20 MARKS
QUESTION IS NOT A CUEGIS QUESTION BUT A CRITERIA SIMILAR TO
CUEGIS IS USED TO ASSESS YOUR ANSWER. This implies that you need
an
introduction,
put
2
ideas
forward,
put
2
problems/limitations/criticisms, consider stakeholders from a
balanced perspective, that is both to individual and group stakeholders,
and end with a judgement/conclusion. In this question, there is no
need to talk about the CUEGIS concepts. Focus should on the
requirements of the questions, for instance make use of relevant
theories, tools and techniques. Make sure to have an introduction, a
body

and
then
a
conclusion/judgement. Do not forget to make use of 1 paragraph for
each idea. Just like the CUEGIS essay, stakeholders are also considered
in this question-Make sure to include both individual and group
stakeholders. The criteria used to assess Paper 1 Section C is as follows

Paper 2 is based on unseen stimulus material (small case studies).

o Duration of paper: HL 2 hours 15 minutes and SL 1 hour 15 minutes.
o Both HL and SL Paper 2 are divided into 3 sections, namely Section A, B and
C.
HIGHER LEVEL (HL) PAPER 2
Section A- Answer 1 out of 2 questions based on numerical
content from the guide. Does not assess higher order
discussion. Only basic state, describe, explain,
construct types of questions.

Section B- Answer 2 out of 3 questions. Basic define,
describe, explain questions for the parts (a), (b), (c), while
part (d) requires higher order thinking- Questions requiring to
evaluate, discuss.. These types of questions are out of 10
marks and there is a need to provide a balanced response, i.e,
putting

compulsory for this type of question. The following shows the
requirements for the highest mark band for 10 marks questions
in Paper 2.

attached at the end of this document.

STANDARD LEVEL (SL) PAPER 2

Section A- Answer 1 out of 2 questions based on numerical
content from the guide. Also assesses higher order discussion.
The basic questions could be to state, describe, explain,
construct and the higher order question might ask to
discuss, recommend, evaluate. For this type of question
(Section A (c) 10 marks), you are required to to provide a
balanced response, i.e, putting 2 ideas forward+2
limitations/disadvantages/criticisms. A judgement is
compulsory for this type of question.

Section B- Answer 1 out of 3 questions. Basic define,
describe, explain questions for the parts (a), (b), (c), while
part (d) requires higher order thinking- Questions requiring to

THE CUEGIS ESSAY

All 6 concepts have to be assessed in Paper 2 Section C. However, there are 2 concepts
assessed per question. You have to choose 1 question(with 2 concepts). The concepts are:
Change, Culture, Ethics, Globalization, Innovation, Strategy. The CUEGIS essay should not
be written on your case study provided for the exams but on a real organisation. Points to
consider:
-Total marks: 20
-Effect of one concept on another concept is required, for instance, Using an organisation of
your choice, discuss the impact of innovation on marketing strategy. For such a question,
you have to make sure that you show how innovation has changed the marketing strategy of
a given firm. As such, the concepts should not be in isolation but worked together since the
effect of one concept on another concept is required.
-Your introduction could set the scene by providing details of the selected organisation and
you should immediately introduce the 2 concepts after that. Introduction of the 2 concepts
should be a bit more than a mere definition. Also, in the introduction, come to the question,
for instance, in this essay, the impact of innovation on Mc Donalds marketing strategy will be
discussed.
-Do not forget to leave a line after each paragraph.
-Your essay should be developed by putting 2 ideas forward and 2
criticisms/limitations/problems/disadvantages [balanced answer]. This implies that the
minimum number of paragraphs for the body of the essay is 4.
-After the body, do not forget to write a conclusion and judgement. In your conclusion, come
back to the question and show that you have been able to answer it.
-Overall, in your essay, you need to consider stakeholders, both individuals and groups. Do
not develop less than 2 stakeholders for each.
-Make sure that the essay is not about what the firm should do but rather about what has
already taken place, that is a discussion about it. However, in your judgement, you can have
some recommendations but this is not a requirement.

Intro- Set the scene, company details, explanation of both concepts
(leave a line)
1st paragraph- Put one idea forward
(leave a line)
2nd paragraph-Put one idea forward
(leave a line)
3rd paragraph-Put one criticism/limitation/cost/disadvantage forward
(leave a line)
4th paragraph-Put one criticism/limitation/cost/disadvantage forward
(leave a line)
Conclusion- Come back to the question and show that you have been able to answer + provide
a judgement.
