Loading Sounds
Before you begin to load anything, we suggest that you save all of your user data as an "ALL" file to your
removable media. This safeguard will keep you from permanently losing any of your sounds or settings.
Loading: When you first load the CD into your computer, you should see three directories: Samples,
Voices, and Info.
The Voices directory contains voices and performances. There are four pairs of files: two pairs
designed for the ES6 and two pairs designed for the ES8. Some performances in the ES6 files use
transposition to maximize keyboard splits (typically, right hand piano and left hand bass). In contrast, the
ES8 files always keep the piano sound in its original octave. To play the piano sounds, use your computer
to copy one pair of files onto your storage media and load it into the Motif ES. For each pair, one file name
will have a 7 near the end, the other will have an 8. Copy them both to your storage media, but note that
you will only see the name with a "7" the Motif ES' File mode.
For example, an ES8 owner would likely copy KAWA_ES8.W7A and KAWA_ES8.W8A to their removable
media. Once the media is connected to the Motif ES, the owner would load KAWA_ES8.W7A.
KAWA_ES8.W8A would not be visible on the loading screen, but the Motif ES will automatically use it in
the loading process.
Because voices and performances are retained in memory when the unit is turned off, you will not need to
reload these files each time the unit is turned on.

Differences between the file types: For each of the ES6 and ES8 configurations, there are AllVoice
files (ending in V) and All files (ending in A). The All Files contain performances and voices. The
AllVoice files contain voices only (no performances).
The Motif ES operating system will not allow you to load a bank of performances without loading an entire
All file, so if you need to keep any user data in memory, you may want to load performances individually.
(In File mode, choose Performance as the file type to load.)
To keep your own user voices in memory, you may want to load voices individually as well (by selecting
Voice as the file type to load). Just be sure to load them to the same location as they are stored in the
file; otherwise, the performances will not function correctly.
Note that loading an All file will overwrite any samples already in memory; loading an AllVoice file will
not. (If you choose to load one of the provided All files, be sure to load it before loading samples.)
ES 6 Users:
- To load voices and performances, use KAWA_ES6.W7A and KAWA_ES6.W8A.
- To load voices only, use KAWA_ES6.W7V and KAWA_ES6.W8V.
ES 8 Users:
- To load voices and performances, use KAWA_ES8.W7A and KAWA_ES8.W8A.

To load voices only, use KAWA_ES8.W7V and KAWA_ES8.W8V.

ES 7 users will probably want to use the ES8 files. These keep all sounds in their original octave.
For more information about file types and loading, see the File Mode chapter of the Motif ES manual,
especially pages 269-270.

The Samples directory contains six different banks (six pairs of files), each of which require a different
amount of sample RAM to load. All banks are named identically, except for the last three characters.
These characters specify the amount of sample RAM (in megabytes) each bank will require: 150Mb,
127Mb, 106Mb, 92Mb, 71Mb, or 61Mb. To play the piano sounds, use your computer to copy one of these
pairs of files onto your storage media and load it into the Motif ES.
For example, to load the 127Mb piano, you'll need to copy both KAWAI_127.W7W and KAWAI_127.W8W
to the storage media. Note that the Motif ES' screen will only display KAWAI_127.W7W. You will not see
KAWAI_127.W8W listed, but the Motif ES will use it automatically in the loading process.
Because RAM samples are not retained in memory when the unit is turned off, you will need to load one
of these banks each time the unit it turned on. **Remember: If youre also loading an All file, be sure to
load it before loading the samples.
Bank descriptions:
- KAWAI150.W7W and KAWAI150.W8W The largest bank. Uses all available sampled notes at
44.1kHz sampling frequency. 150Mb RAM required.
- KAWAI127.W7W and KAWAI127.W8W Uses fewer sampled notes, all at 44.1kHz sampling
frequency. 127Mb RAM required.
- KAWAI106.W7W and KAWAI106.W8W Uses all available sampled notes, with ff samples at
44.1kHz sampling frequency and mf samples at 22.05kHz sampling frequency. 106Mb RAM
required.
- KAWAI_92.W7W and KAWAI_92.W8W Uses fewer sampled notes, with ff samples at 44.1kHz
sampling frequency and mf samples at 22.05kHz sampling frequency. 92Mb RAM required.
- KAWAI_71.W7W and KAWAI_71.W8W Uses all available sampled notes at 22.05kHz sampling
frequency. 71Mb RAM required.
- KAWAI_61.W7W and KAWAI1_61.W8W Uses fewer sampled notes, all at 22.05kHz sampling
frequency. 61Mb RAM required.
The Info directory contains this documentation file and the unique user registration file. This
documentation file explains the organization of the CD and describes the sounds, and the registration file
lists the unique number with which your CD is registered to you.

Voice List
AP: Studio VS Full, dynamic grand piano with enhanced sustain. The velocity-to-amplitude response
is tailored to provide a present, studio sound. Velocity-switched.
AP: Studio VSx Identical to AP: Studio VS, except with greater velocity-to-amplitude response.
AP: Mix Piano VS Identical to AP: Studio VS, except with restricted velocity-to-amplitude response.
Its consistent volume gives it presence in dense mixes or performances.
AP: Bright VS Velocity-switched piano with enhanced sustain and a bright dynamic response. Playing
softly will still yield a warm tone (though not as warm as AP: Studio VS), and playing forcefully will yield
a bright, aggressive timbre.

AP: Rocker ff Aggressive piano with a decidedly bright dynamic response. Although velocity does
control the timbre to a degree, this piano will remain bright regardless of velocity. Uses ff velocity only.
AP: Hyper! VS Similar to AP: Bright VS, but processed to have a crisp, metallic character. Velocityswitched.
AP: Hyper 2 VS Highly compressed and effected piano ideal for aggressive interludes. (Not designed
for most standard applications.) Velocity-switched.
AP: Mono VS Summed mono piano with a bright response. Velocity-switched.
AP: Classic VS Warm piano with enhanced sustain. Velocity-switched.
AP: Natural VS Similar to AP: Studio VS, but without enhanced sustain. This voice emulates the
rapid natural decay of an unprocessed recorded piano. Velocity-switched.
AP: Warm mf Mellow piano with enhanced sustain. Uses mf velocity only.
AP: Tender Identical to AP: Warm mf, except with a prominent reverb that adds drama to a sparsely
played passage. Designed for emotional cinematic moments.
AP: Recital Warm, responsive piano with enhanced sustain. Compared to AP: Warm mf, this piano
has a wider, slightly brighter dynamic response. Prominent reverb simulates a concert hall. Uses mf
velocity only.
AP: Clear VS Aggressive, enhanced piano. Velocity-switched.
AP: Dark VS Similar to AP: Clear VS, but with a darker resonant quality. Velocity-switched.
AP: Studio ff Single velocity version of AP: Studio VS. Uses ff velocity only.
AP: Mix Pno ff Single velocity version of AP: Mix Piano VS. Uses ff velocity only.
AP: Classic ff Single velocity version of AP: Classic VS. Uses ff velocity only.
AP: Natural ff Single velocity version of AP: Natural ff. Uses ff velocity only.
