St Christina of Tyre
St Christina lived during the third century. She was born into a rich family, and her
father was Governor of Tyre. By the age of 11 St Christina was exceptionally
beautiful, and many suitors wanted to marry her.
However, her father had envisioned his daughter as a pagan priestess, and in
order to prepare her for her future role, he kept her in a special dwelling filled
with many gold and silver idols, before which he had commanded her to make
offerings and to burn incense.
Two servants attended to all her needs and comfort, but in her solitude, St Christina
contemplated Who had created such a beautiful world. From her window at
night she was delighted by the great multitude of bright stars twinkling like
diamonds in the heavens and she constantly thought about the Great
Mysterious Creator.
Furthermore, she was certain that the voiceless and inanimate idols could not
create anything, since they themselves were created by human hands, so she
began to pray to the Unknown Almighty God with heartfelt tears, entreating Him
to reveal Himself to her.
As her soul blazed with increasing Love and yearning for that Mysterious God, she
intensified her Prayers all the more, combined it with Fasting and self-denial.
One day St Christina received an Angelic Visitation and was Instructed in Divine
Truth - the True Faith in Christ -the Saviour of the world.
The Angel of God addressed her as Bride of Christ and revealed her future
Martyrdom for her Love of God.
St Christina destroyed all the idols that surrounded her, and threw the broken
pieces of gold and silver out the window, so that the poor could benefit from
them.
When her father, Urban, visited her, he immediately noticed the absence of all the
valuable idols and asked her what she had done with them but she remained
silent and when he had summoned the terrified servants, he then learnt what
had happened to them.
Urban was outraged and in his mindless anger, began to slap his beloved
daughters face. At first, she remained quiet, but then she loudly confessed her
Faith in the One True and Living God, which was the reason that she had
destroyed the lifeless, manmade idols with her own hands.
The enfuriated Governor ordered all the servants of his daughter to be killed, and
he then brutally attacked her beating her black and blue before having her
imprisoned.
St Christinas mother, having been informed of everything that had occurred,
hastened to her and implored her to renounce Christ and to return to her
ancestral beliefs. But St Christina remained completely unyielding to her
mothers tears and pleadings.
When Governor Urban brought his daughter to trial he felt a moment of remorse,
and urged her to make an offering to the gods and to ask their forgiveness for
her misdeeds. Instead, she publicly made her unwavering Confession of Faith
in Christ our Lord, whereupon she was sentenced to torture and death.
The executioner tied the beautiful young Martyr to an iron wheel, under which was
a fire, so that her pure body being turned on the wheel, was burnt on all sides,
after which they threw her into a dungeon.
An Angel of God appeared that night, and Healed her terrible, painful burns, and
Strengthened her with Heavenly Nourishment.
When her astonished father saw that she was unharmed, he issued orders to drown
her at sea, and again an Angel of our Lord sustained St Christina while the
heavy stone with which she had been weighted, sank, and she miraculously
reappeared before her wicked father.

Thine is the Kingdom, and

The terrified Governor and his executioners imputed (alleged) her Miraculous
survival to sorcery and it was decided to execute her in the morning, but that
night her father suddenly died, and another Governor, Dion, succeeded him.
When he heard about St Christina, the beautiful young daughter of the former
Governor, he summoned her and, being impressed by her intelligence and
beauty, also tried to persuade her to renounce Christ.
However, witnessing her unyielding Faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, he
condemned her to further cruel tortures and imprisonment.
Many of the citizens had heard of and had witnessed her Miraculous survival and
Healing despite the unspeakable cruelties she suffered, and they flocked to her
most of them being converted to the Divine Truth of Almighty God and True
Faith in Christ our Lord and Saviour.
Thus approximately 300 souls were
converted and Saved.
A new Governor, Julian, arrived and resumed the indescribable torture of the Great
Virgin Martyr of Tyre.
Having once again survived, despite a variety of torments, St Christina was throw
into a red-hot furnace and locked in for five days.
To their utter shock and total amazement, when they finally opened the furnace, St
Christina calmly stepped out completely unharmed and as serene as ever!!
Many of the multitude who had witnessed this Great Divine Miracle, believed in the
One True and Living God and accepted our Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and
Saviour.
Finally, the executioners beheaded St Christina, who joyfully surrendered her pure,
immortal soul to her Beloved Lord and she Reposed in Peace at last, having
received her well-earned Crown of Holy Martyrdom.
May her memory be Eternal, and may St Christina, Virgin Martyr of Tyre, ceaselessly
Intercede for the Salvation of our soul.
