Lesson 60 minutes
Intro (10 mins)
-

Discuss with the students what is a percussion instrument? List and show some examples of the different types
of percussion instruments you have in your classroom, or show on the SMARTboard if unavailable. E.g.
xylophone, cymbals, triangle, drums, tambourine, maracas, gongs, chimes, and piano. (You can also show
examples of more exotic/less common percussion instruments.)
Discuss the difference between pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments

Main Lesson (45 mins)

-

Think-pair-share: Have students look over the materials you have gathered. Give them 10 minutes to design 3 or
more percussion instruments on a piece of paper (draw, write or think about). The students will then pair up and
share their designs with one another. We will then go around the class and each student will talk about their
favorite design that their partner came up with. (Materials needed, what type of instrument, how it is played,
pitched or un-pitched, etc.)
Students will then make or choose a design that they will then begin to construct (encourage the designs to be
functional, durable and creative).

Closure/Reflection (5 mins)
-

Revisit the discussion, go over key concepts with the class.

Ask the students how the design process went. Did they take any advice from their partner? Did their design
work? Did they have to make changes?

Extension
-

If students finish early, have them research interesting percussion instruments from around the world.

Materials Required
- Smart Board
- Percussion instruments (if available)
- Materials to make instruments: Plastic
bottles, cans, cardboard, plastic,
containers, tubes, bags, wood, etc.
- Rice, beans, pebbles, sand

Paint, Paint brushes
Differentiation
- Offer more time
- Offer the possibility to work in pairs
for those who may need help.
- Show visual or physical examples of
instruments.
- Allow different design processes
(draw, write, think/explain)
Assessment
- Assess during discussion of the designs
and construction to check for
comprehension. Make observations.
(clipboard cruising)
- Have students present and demo their
instruments. (Next lesson) evaluate
with rubric.
Notes
-Show the class the instrument that I
have created.

Lesson 60 minutes
Next Steps
-

Have students present and demo their instruments.

Choose a story that the students know and divide it into several sections. Divide the class into several groups. Ask
each group to create a rhythmic accompaniment reflecting the events, feelings and characters of their part of the
story using their new instruments.
