PREFACE
Alan N. Crawford, Professor Emeritus
California State University, Los Angeles
Mantra is a unique approach to teaching English as a second language that has grown out of
Daniel Mena Mrquez language learning concept that he calls sofropedia. It is a blend of
several approaches to the teaching of second or foreign language.

It reflects aspects of

communicative approaches in its thematic curriculum and employment of small group

processes. It reflects the audiolingual approach with its use of dialogues, but without the tedious
and often meaningless repetition that characterizes that approach. And it reflects grammartranslation approaches in its treatment of the always troublesome concepts of using prepositions,
pronouns, irregular verbs, and comparatives/superlatives.
The forty-four dialogues, with related readings, reflect common social problems placed in an
interesting and even racy historical perspective, ensuring the continuing interest of students.
The dialogues build tension and motivate the students to become involved. There are interesting
roles for both male and female students to play. Dramatization of the dialogues should be
entertaining and, therefore, educationally useful for those engaged in them and also for those
who observe. In addition, they will often be motivated to construct parallel and contemporary
dialogues.
On a technical level, the curriculum is carefully crafted to lead students through the same
vocabulary on a periodic basis, ensuring learning for those who dont master some words or
concepts at the first opportunity. Difficult areas of English, such as antonyms, pronouns,
question patterns, irregular verbs, and comparatives and superlatives are treated very directly
with accurate and helpful examples. The section on English prepositions is especially useful,
providing students with criteria for how and when to use them correctly.

Dr. Menas Mantra is based on a Sanskrit word for instrument of the mind. It certainly
provides that instrument to his students of English.
implications for teaching other languages, as well.

Introduccin

1.- Susan is from London. She speaks English.
Tu hermana.
1.- My sister is from Havana. She speaks Spanish . Etc.
APLIQUE, APLIQUE, APLIQUE

Comenzamos a

leer de derecha a izquierda.

Ejemplo:

18

decimos eight y despus el nombre del 1.

14

Lesson 21.
Dialogue
REVENGE
Next day
The investigation is still going on.
Inspector:

We captured the desk clerk last night.

One of his neighbours told us that he had a small parcel
when he arrived at his house. But we questioned him and
he said he was guilty, but not of murder.
He has been stealing money from the hotel and he had
removed one of the hinges of the safe. He was afraid
of being discovered and ran away to hide the hinge in his house.
He thought that nobody had seen him.
So he doesnt have anything to do with the murder.
He has been accused of robbery.

Mrs. Green:

Inspector, Id like to talk to you. Id like to go to my room now.

Inspector:

All right, lets go.

In the room
Mrs. Green:

I killed Mr. Smith. People thought I was near the pool,

but I took advantage of the music and that everybody
was dancing and I left. I took a pair of scissors.
I wrapped them up in a headscarf and I killed him.

Inspector:

Why did you kill him?

Mrs. Green:

Its a very sad story. We used to live in Germany in 1945.

My husband was in a concentration camp with my daughter Susan.
I was in another one. Mr. Smiths real name was Von Holter, a nazi
officer. He killed my husband in front of my 10 year old daughter. Thats
why I killed him.

The inspector wants to find out who killed Mr. Smith.
Inspector:

Mrs. Green, I want you to tell us the way you killed the man.
The weapon you used, etc.

Mrs. Green:

I left the party when nobody could see me, and I came here with the
scissors I had taken from my room some minutes ago.
I pushed the door, and it was open. I saw him sleeping peacefully.
I got close to him, and I stabbed him in the heart. I ran away.
I got rid of the scissors.
I washed my hands, and I went to the party again.

Inspector:

Did you use only the scissors?

Mrs. Green:

Yes, only the scissors.

Inspector:

Didnt you stop near the door?

Mrs. Green:

No, I said I ran away. I didnt stop anywhere.

Inspector:

Did you talk to your daughter, Susan, about the way you
killed him?

Mrs. Green:

Yes, I wanted her to know that I had taken revenged for her father.
It was something terrible for her to see how a murderer
was killing her father very slowly, and she couldnt do
anything because she was still a girl.

Inspector:

Where is your daughter? Id like to talk to her.

Mrs. Green:

No, she doesnt have anything to do with the murder. She

loves Robert, and shes going to marry him.

Inspector:

Susan, your mother talked to you about the way she

killed Mr. Smith, didnt she?

Susan:

Yes, she did.

Inspector:

Could you tell us the story, please?

Susan:

Yes, my mother was near the pool, and she took me to my room.
She took the scissors and a headscarf and came here.
She opened the door and saw him sleeping.
She got beside him, wrapped up the scissors in the
headscarf and stabbed him three times.
She was leaving the room when she realized that there
were some drops of blood on the floor, and she squeezed
the headscarf, and left the room.

Inspector:

Where are the scissors and the headscarf, Susan?

Susan:

I dont know. My mother didnt tell me where she put them.

Robert:

Im afraid it is true, but what about Susans father?

Was he the one who killed her father?

Yes, Robert, and Susan was present when

was really hard for her.
She committed murder and she has to pay
for that. But she had reasons to do it.

Robert:

I dont know what to say.

I would like to be out of this problem.
Sometimes I believe Im dreaming because I had fallen
in love with Susan, and she killed my father.

Robert, try not to look at her very often.

Robert:

I saw her coming. She looks as if she has been in

the doctor, but luckily she is getting over it.

LOVE AND JUSTICE
Robert received a letter.
Inspector:

Have you seen your mother?

She should be here.

Robert:

No, Im afraid she hasnt arrived yet.

Inspector:

I saw her on the street, and she told me she was going
to attend the trial.

Robert:

She must still be ashamed of what she has done.

Inspector:

If I were you, Id forgive her.

She has suffered a lot, and she is a very kind person.

Mrs. Green:

I believe the trial is going to be over in a few minutes.

Lets see the conclusion of the jury. I know she is guilty, but I wonder
what the punishment will be.

Inspector:

I expect the judge and the jury to be lenient

with her. She doesnt deserve a hard punishment because
she killed a Nazi officer.
Im sorry, Robert, but thats the truth.

Robert:

Dont worry inspector. Im Okay.

Inspector:

Your mother gave me this letter for you.

I want you to read it before the trial is over.

Lesson 36.
THE LETTER
Dear Son:
I have been living with a bitter secret for a long time, and the day has come to tell you the truth
about me and about you.
I used to live in a small village near a quiet city. My parents were very poor. I couldnt attend
school because of our economical conditions. My father died when I was eleven years old, and
my mother died during the war. I found myself alone in the world, when I was fifteen years old,
and I had to do things that are criticized by society.
I met a very handsome man by the name of Robert Collins. I fell in love with him. He
abandoned me five months later, and I didnt have time to tell him I was pregnant. Two months
later a Nazi officer asked me to marry him, and I didnt hesitate because I needed a step father
for you.
Please forgive Susan; she loves you. I want you to marry her and have many children. They will
give you a lot of fun and love forever.
Look for your father. He doesnt know about you, but I know he is a very nice person and will
understand immediately.
He lives in London and his name is Robert Collins. He is a very good lawyer, and he can do
something for Susan.
I beg you to forgive me. My death is necessary. I cant stand living with this shameful behavior.
Marry Susan, and be happy forever.
I love you,
Your mother, Carol.
