Positioning Distribution Transformers

Document Number: EOP 04-0049

Version: 4.0
Date: 03/12/2013

Introduction

A distribution transformer that has been built into a unit (package) substation must be
correctly positioned in a substation or within a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) housing so
that remote terminal units (RTU) and other equipment can be installed.

Scope

All unit (package) substations mounted on plinths, within substation structures, and enclosed
in GRP housings.

Description

Remote terminal units (RTU) are being installed in substations to facilitate the increased use
of automation across all three licensed networks.
RTUs are not mounted on the transformer. The unit (package) substation needs to be
positioned in the substation building or inside the GRP housing (figure 1) so that the RTU
can be installed without impeding access to and operation of the RMU and LV equipment
(figure 2)

Figure 1: GRP Housing

Figure 2: RMU and LV Cabinet

Unit substations consist of an LV cabinet and/or Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) and a RMU bolted
onto the distribution transformer. The distribution of the combined weight of the LV cabinet
and/or ACB and the RMU on one side of the transformer can cause the transformer to
topple. Stabilising legs are often attached to the distribution transformer to stop the unit
substation from toppling.
Depending on the transformer design and weight, one or more stabilising legs can be found
attached to the base of the transformer usually underneath the HV flange. The stabilising
legs on the transformer must be supported to ensure that the unit substation does not topple.

Actions Required

The installer must ensure that the stabilising legs on the transformer (where fitted) are in full
contact with the concrete plinth or floor of the substation. See Figure 3 for details.

Unit substations housed in other types of substations shall be positioned so that a RTU can
be installed without limiting access to or operation of the RMU or other equipment.
Unit substations installed in a GRP housing should be positioned towards the left of the
concrete plinth at least 100-150mm from the inside wall of the GRP housing.
Using the brackets supplied, the RTU must be installed at the front of the GRP housing on
the right-hand side inside the access doors. See Figure 4 for details.
