X was a tactic used by a team Y against the opposition Z in a particular series.
Ys captain insisted that the tactic was legitimate and called it Leg Theory but it was widely
disparaged by its opponents, who dubbed it X.
Although Y decisively won the series, X caused such a furore in Z that diplomats had to
intervene to prevent serious harm to Y-Z relations, and the laws of cricket eventually
changed to curtail the number of leg side fielders.
Some of Zs players wanted to use X in retaliation, but their captain flatly refused & famously
told Ys manager, There are 2 teams out here. One is playing cricket, the other is making no
attempt to do so.

The ComBat was a cricket bat and the subject of a controversy that occurred at
the WACA cricket ground in Perth in December 1979.
Australia were playing England in the first Test, and were in trouble at the end of
the first day, at a score of 232/8 with X not out. When the second day of play
began, X emerged onto the field carrying not the traditional willow bat, but a
cricket bat made from some other material.
X decided to use it in the Test match as a marketing stunt, and at that point, there
were no rules against using such a bat. English captain Mike Brearley complained
to umpires that the metallic bat was damaging the soft, leather cricket ball. X threw
his ComBat away in anger towards the pavilion when asked to change the bat.

Some hat-tricks are particularly extraordinary. Many of us remember first over hattrick by
Chaminda Vaas (ODI), Irfan Pathan (Tests) and by Malinga (4 in 4) .
But this one by X is quite special. X has a unique distinction of taking a hat-trick spread
across three overs and two innings! At the WACA, Perth in 1988-89, he completed a hat-trick
spread across three separate overs, two innings, and two different days. He got rid of Curtly
Ambrose caught behind with the last ball of his over and ended West Indies first innings in
his next over, by removing Patrick Patterson on the very first ball; and then in the second
innings after more than a day, completed his hat-trick by trapping Gordon Greenidge lbw on
the first ball of West Indies second innings.
X was perhaps one of the best at the art of sledging and was popular for his big moustache.
The popularity was such that it was rumored that he has insured it for 200,000 which later
on he claimed to be a false hoax. He was also offered 25,000 pounds to shave off his
moustache; an offer that he clearly declined.

Harsha Bhogle on the great batsman X :
Making his debut in Test cricket, X scored duck in both innings. They dropped him. More first-class
cricket. More runs. Waiting for that elusive call. And after 21 months, he got a second chance.
His scores: 0 in the first innings, 1 in the second. Dropped again, he went back to the grind. And scored
tonnes of runs in first-class cricket. Runs that seemed inadequate to erase the painful memories of the
Test failures.
Well, seventeen months later, opportunity knocked yet again. His scores: 0 and 0. Phew! Back to the
grind. Would the selectors ever give him another chance? They said he lacked big-match temperament.
His technique wasnt good enough at the highest level. Undaunted, X kept trying. Three years later, he got
another chance.
This time, he made runs. He came good. And in an illustrious career thereafter, X went on to score over
5000 runs for Sri Lanka. That included sixteen centuries and six double hundreds. And he went on to
captain his country. All this despite taking over six years to score his second run in Test cricket. Wow!

________ __ ___________ is a phrase used to describe an area on the cricket pitch: A
narrow line on and just outside a batsman's off stump.
It was coined by Geoffrey Boycott and is derived from the opinion that this is the area in
which a batsman struggles most to determine whether to play forward or back, or whether to
leave the delivery. If a batsman leaves the ball, there's a chance the ball will turn inward and
either bowl him or hit him with an increased chance of leg before wicket. If a batsman plays
the ball, there's a chance the ball will go to the outside instead, leading to an outside edge
that can be easily caught.
In football, it is commonly used to describe an area where a cross or pass in front of the
goalkeeper and behind the last line of defence.

During Sobers record breaking 365 against Pakistan, the inventor of Reverse
Sweep, Hanif Mohammad was introduced into the attack with the hope that
Sobers would lose concentration and give his wicket away as a non-regular bowler
was in operation. However the 2nd ball of the over, Sobers hit a boundary thereby
equalling Len Huttons record of 364. In order to distract Sobers further, Hanif tried
something different for the rest of the over.
Other notable instances: Hashan Tillakaratnes last over against Kenya (World
Cup 1996) , Akshay Karnewar (recently in Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 2016) and
Kamindu Mendis ( ICC Under-19 World Cup 2016)
What had Hanif tried to do to prevent Sobers get the coveted single?

In a triangular tournament in Australia with Zimbabwe, Australia and West Indies, Zimbabwe
played their final match with Australia and X got a chance in the team. Zimbabwe needed 15 runs
to win the match in the final over, which was to be bowled by Glenn McGrath. X moved across to
the first and third balls he received from McGrath and scooped them over his shoulder to fine leg
for boundaries, reviving hopes of an incredible Zimbabwe victory. But he was just unable to
complete the job, and his team lost by two runs.
His two courageous and unorthodox boundary strokes made him famous as the inventor of Scoop
shot, with the shot becoming known as the X shot or ramp shot.
In 2002 he Xed" Zimbabwe to a famous win in India in an One Day International at Faridabad,
India with 56 not out at the death, although this time he used the shot against Zaheer Khan.

X was an Australian media tycoon, owner of Channel Nine and was best known
for founding World Series Cricket during late 1970s. At the time of his death in
2005, he was the richest man with A$6.5 billion and one of the most influential
men in Australia.
He once famously said this to Australian cricketers during negotiations to put
together World Series Cricket :
There is a little bit of the whore in all of us, gentlemen. The question is - what is
your price?

Ramnaresh Sarwan played the ball to square-leg and ran for a single. When he ran past the
bowler X, to the surprise of many, X asked: What does Brian Laras dick taste like?
This was rather odd, coming from X. But, he did ask Sarwan the question; and Sarwan
responded: I dont know. Ask your wife.
Under normal circumstances, X would have accepted that hed asked for it. While a little
voice pleaded for him to ignore it, something just wouldnt allow him to let the slur go
unchallenged. Xs fingers were pointed at Sarwan, and the words that came out of his mouth
were not exactly the kind youd associate with the legend.
If you f**king mention my wife again, Ill f**king rip your f**king throat out.

This definitely has to be one of the greatest innings in ODI cricket. They won the
toss and elected to bat on a bouncy pitch at Tunbridge Wells and got off to a
disastrous start, losing 5 wickets for 17 runs as the Zimbabwean bowlers led by
Kevin Curran made full use of the helpful conditions.
The irony of the whole effort was that was that the match was not covered live by
BBC, the broadcasters of the tournament as they were on a strike that day and
hence no video footage of the game is available. The ground was ruled as too
small with the two countries being deemed too irrelevant for a camera crew to
be sent to the match.
Whose monumental effort took the team out of trouble?
