About Northern Treasures:

Changling Rinpoche was recognized as a

young boy as the incarnation of the 14th century master Changchub Lingpa. In this life,
Changling Rinpoche was born in Kalimpong,
raised in Anglican schools in northeast India
until his rebirth identification. At Shechen
Monastery in Katmandu, he completed the
study at the philosophical college at the age of
21. He received the title Khenpo, which is
roughly the equivalent of a Doctor of Theology. He currently lives in Katmandu where
he is in charge of the monastic learning and
discipline at Shechen, the largest Buddhist
monastery in Nepal. In 1998 the lamas of the
Northern Treasure lineage elected Rinpoche
as the next head of the lineage.

The Northern Treasures were the last

teachings given by Padmasambhava before
leaving Tibet. After giving them, he hid
them for a future generation. In the late 14th
century C.E., Tulku Zangpo Drakpa found
the famous Prayer in Seven Chapters. This
he gave to Rigdzen Godem for whom they
were the key to finding the main body of
teachings. Later branches were recovered by
Tennyi Lingpa (15th c.) and Garwang Dorje
(17th c). Among its many famous teachings is
the Gonpa Sangtal, one of the most sublime
works on The Great Perfection among
Padmasambhavas vast teachings. Dudjom
Rinpoche wrote in his History of the Nyingma
School that as the Northern Treasures were
given to help the king and his descendents
they subsequently served all Tibetans like a
faithful minister.

Since the fifteenth century, the line of Changling Rinpoches have practiced and maintained the Northern Treasures lineage of
Buddhist teachings. Using these teachings,
countless men and women have left this world
dissolving their bodies into rainbow colored
light. Others have left amazing signs of realization. Until now, this lineage has rarely been
taught in this country.

Dalai Lama has said many
times, these teachings are for
everyone to use as they see fit.

Rinpoche is available for private appointments.

Decades ago, when the Chinese sought to

occupy Tibet, many fled their homeland.
These precious Treasures were dispersed
and dwindled. Until now. The Northern
Treasures Buddhist Fellowship is a newly

Introduction to Vajrayana

Take a field trip to the Asian Art Museum in San

Francisco. Rinpoche is an expert in Tibetan art
and sculpture in addition to his knowledge of the
inner, spiritual meaning and ritual use. His extensive knowledge of the sutra tradition will also
provide invaluable insights into the meaning of art
from other countries and Buddhist traditions. We
will meet in the Inner Light parking lot on Soquel
Ave at 9am and travel to the museum for the day.
Tickets at the museum are $10. Call to make arrangements if you wish to meet us at the museum.

The Treasure Tradition in Tibet (10/14/05)

Before leaving Tibet, the second Buddha, Padmasambhava hid many teachings for future generations. Found
as books, physical objects and through dreams and visions, they have been revealed by successive rebirths of
his disciples. Often appearing in symbolic script, they are
transcribed only by the rebirth of the intended disciple.

To be still and know, one must know how to be still.
Calm the mind and heal the body. Buddha taught that
the mind is empty in essence, luminous in nature and
unlimited in capacity. Rinpoche will combine progressive teachings on the view with stages of practice.
Vajrayana Buddhism uses meditation, contemplation
and recitation of prayers and mantras in practice. The
later two are also used to calm the mind and expand the
heart to facilitate meditation. Bring your questions and
be ready to surrender your monkey mind!

Masters and Disciples (10/21/05)

Rinpoche will discuss the types of teachers are found
in Buddhism, the qualifications of a true master and
whether one is one necessary. Well also cover the qualifications of a disciple, what is real devotion and the
importance of authentic lineage.
Buddhas on Fire and Naked Dancing Ladies (10/28/05)
Himalayan art is full of fantastic imagery. For tantric
practitioners, these are maps to enlightenment. Padmasambhava said that Buddhas can have peaceful, powerful, even wrathful appearances. They may have an ordinary human form or many heads, arms and legs. Some
appear alone, others have consorts. Meditation on and
transformation into these enlightened forms along with
mantra recitation and liturgy is the backbone of tantric
practice in Tibet.

The Prayer in Seven Chapters

Leu Deunma was the first teaching of the Northern
Treasures revealed. These prayers show Padmasambhava as the embodiment of all Buddhas, enlightened
states and lineages. These prayers originated in response
to requests made by a close circle of 5 of Padmas 5
Tibetan students. They are among the most widely
chanted prayers in Tibet and have been translated into
English several times. Rinpoche will comment on these
prayers according to the tradition of Dorje Drak and
the Northern Treasures.

All course fees are suggested donations. No one is turned away for lack of funds. Your contribution benefits the preservation of these teachings.

Empowerments and Teachings

An empowerment is an initiation ritual which awakens
ones latent wisdom, brought to fruition through the
meditation practice it authorizes one to do. Originating
in ancient India, these particular practices are rooted in
the enlightened intention of Buddha Padmasambhava,
who taught them first in Tibet in the eighth century.
He then hid them until they were revealed by Rigdzen
Godem in 1366 C.E. Subsequent teachings on the inner and secret aspects of the practice will be available.
The Buddhas of Abundance (10/15/05)
Khandro Norlha is Padmasambhava in the robes
of Vaishravana the King of the North who bestows
wealth. He is accompanied by Jambhala and Vasudeva,
who bestow all types of wealth. Thus this practice includes the three roots of Vajrayana practice who bestow
material wealth, psychic well-being and the ultimate
spiritual abundance of enlightenment itself.
The Great Indestructible Mother (10/22/05)
Vajra Varahi is the embodiment of enlightened activity
in a female form known as a dakini. In Hinduism,
shaktis are the female embodiments of the energy of
their male counterparts, in Buddhist trantras, dakinis
stand on their own as embodiment of enlightened
energy and wisdom.
The Buddha of Tough Love (10/29/05)
Padmasambhava (Guru Drakpo) is the master who established Buddhism in Tibet in the 8th century. He is the
embodiment of the transformative power of compassion and wisdom. This meditation is the door to the
Northern Treasures teachings on Dzog Chen, the Great
Perfection, known as Gonpa Sangtal.
The Embodiment of all Enlightened Masters (11/5/05)
Padmasambhava (Lama Rigzen) appears as an enlightened sage and yogi surrounded by great masters of
ancient India before his travel to Tibet. In the Northern Treasures, this is the inner aspect of the teacher as
the embodiment of all enlightened beings.
