09th /10th JULY 2016

15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,
Today we hear the story of the Good Samaritan. The other
readings could get lost in the shadow of this most powerful parable.
In the first reading from Deuteronomy, Moses urges the people to
make Gods law grow in their hearts and minds, not just lip-service.
St Paul to the Colossians tells us that the church is the body of Christ we are his body made
up of many parts.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan is one of the most beautiful and well known of all
of Jesus stories. We have heart it so many time that we may say we know all about it but
we need to look at it as if for the first time. Notice that the young man in the story asks Jesus
the question: Who is my neighbour? and then pushes Jesus further in order to justify
himself and had in mind to embarrass Jesus.
Jesus tells us clearly that our neighbour is anyone, regardless of colour, race, creed,
class, origins anyone who needs help.
The Levite and the Temple priest do not emerge in a good light. They pass by on the
other side of the road not wanting to get contaminated by touching what they perceived as a
corpse they would not be able to participate in Temple worship if they touched a dead
body. Whatever compassion they may have had, was over-ridden by Temple rituals
something Jesus often condemned. Do we ever pass by on the other side?
Help comes from a most unexpected source, a Samaritan. Jesus didnt say whether
the injured man was a Jew or Samaritan. It didnt matter; he was in need, so he generously
and courageously offered help. He not only cared for his injuries, but he also put his hand
in his pocket as well to offer financial support.
So we need to make this story our own once more. We need to see ourselves in all the
players in the story: i.e. the injured man, even the robbers, the Levite, the priest and the
Samaritan. There is a message to us from all those characters.
SKYDIVE!! I did it at last! All went very well last Thursday. Thanks for all your
support and sponsorship in the crazy venture! The amount raised is over 4,000, to be
divided between parish funds and our Justice and Peace work. Its been also a valuable
wake-up-call on my weight-watching a stone loss in 5 weeks! Im considering running
slimming classes or at least consultation on the topic!! Many thanks again for all your
support and encouragement.
We welcome Fr Tom Murphy, SJ who is with us once more. We hope you enjoy your
stay here at St John Vianney.
Thats all for now. Have a nice week! Fr Joe
