Introduction
AKSHAY CONTROLS & SYSTEMS PVT LTD (ACSPL) was established in 1996 with its
registered office at CBD - Belapur, Navi Mumbai. Maharashtra, India. ACSPL also
has a service branch at Vizag (Vishakhapatnam).
ACSPL has been assessed and approved by Indian Registrar Quality Systems (A
Department of IRS) in accordance with requirements of ISO 9001:2008 with respect
to the following scope: "Design, Manufacture, Supply and Repair of Marine
Electronic Equipments and Control Systems".
ACSPL initially focused on meeting the growing demand for a specialist electrical,
electronic and control system repair and servicing company generated by the
shipping and offshore activities in Indian Ports. Over the years the shipping industry
at Mumbai grew rapidly and ACSPL also grew to meet the additional demands as a
company that was able to carry out complex electronic control and system repairs
of visiting vessels. By early 2000 ACSPL became well established in the area and built
up a strong customer base which included many Indian and international shipping
agents, owners and operators.

are completely self sufficient in terms of knowledge right from system design to building the
system and final commissioning of the system. We are transparent and share our complete

ACSPL is a name to reckon in the field of import substitution of marine control & automation. The
increasing complexity and integration of electrical & electronic control systems into all types of
process equipment & machinery resulted in increasing demand for the range of services offered
and rapid expansion followed. The experience gained by us over the past decade led to
increasing number of requests from ship owners to provide service cover worldwide. Over the
years we have evolved a wide knowledge base and being located at Mumbai, prompt
response at short notice is an added advantage. Backed by the experience in the marine
control and automation field, we are at an added advantage of being able to understand and
discern the root cause of most of the operation & maintenance (O&M) based technical faults /

The input data is collected from a variety of measurement sources including hydrostatic pressure
transmitter using Modbus serial protocol. Each input can be individually configured on screen for
scaling and setting other parameters such as specific gravity and alarm set points.

Complex Structures Demand complex Modelling


Due to the non standard shapes of tanks, a direct linear relationship cannot be established
between height of the liquid obtained to volume needed to calculate the weight.

Moreover the trim of the vessel has a consequential effect on the obtained height of the liquid.

Thus considering all these factors, a complex mathematical modelling and analysis is studied
which gives us a higher order polynomial relationship between height and volume to near
incredible precision.

Dynamic Positioning (DP)


History of Up gradation.
As technology advances it is reflected in the significant advancements of the latest control
systems that are designed in new ships. Dynamic Positioning (DP) is one typical example of such
a control system. But what can one do with the existing old ships, since originally there was no
provision to add DP controls? Well, there are solutions for them too. The options are
Replace the entire existing control system electronics with Latest DP compatible system.
Introduce a smart interface unit to make the old system Compatible for DP.While the former will
be cost, time and effort intensive and the latter will be less expensive, quick and easy solution.
Hence an efficient interface unit is having an
important role. This is where ACSPL product AIDP
300 comes into the picture as it is an exclusive
design for the above duty.
As the offshore production areas become more
congested, the demand for dynamically positioned
vessels, barges and platforms increases rapidly.
Rather than scrapping older vessels and replacing them with DP-capable new ships, many

external forces such as wind, waves and
water current. The dynamic positioning
system understands the shift in the positiion of the vessel due the above forces
by receiving related feedback signals.
Gyro, GPS etc are the most important equipments in giving the position related feedbacks DP computer
calculates the magnitude and direction of the required forces to counter act the change in feedback. It
generates the proper command signals to control the propulsion related equipments like thrusters,
steering and propellers. Thus the counter acting thrusts are getting generated by the above equipments.
All the thrust related equipments will be under the control of DP computer in DP mode. A good DP system
will not allow the vessel to drift from its set position irrespective of the external forces. Hence the actual
performance of the DP system is partly depends on the external equipments also.

DP INTERFACING
While converting existing vessel into DP vessels, DP processing unit
may not match with existing equipments and its electronics.
Thus in such cases we can interface by designing new electronics
so that old system can be used compatibly with the new DP system.
A good DP interfacing system create vital link to receive and transmit
all required data between thrusters / propellers /steering and DP
processor unit. Proper integration of all equipments of the system requires
a good understanding of the interdependence of all critical system components.

INTERFACING
Interfacing is to connect two different type of systems so that they can communicate with each other to
function effectively. It is very important to note that mechanical parts used in old type CPP gear box and
new type gear box are not much different but electronics behind them are far from comparable.
Electronics in the last a half century has developed tremendously. Hence well designed interfaces for old
system will be an excellent technical solution to achieve this goal.

To upgrade the above existing OSV control system with the new DP1 (Dynamic Positioning level1) system, an interface unit is required to make these two systems integral. The AIDP 300 is a
tailor-made interface unit to integrate these systems. This unit also meet the requirements of
owners and classification society.

As Kongsberg Simrad SDP only supply the DP unit,


the interface of the same with existing thruster
control had to be established by the user. This
part of the job which is highly specialized was
assigned to ACSPL.

It involved detailed study of existing vessel


machinery, systems response and Kongsberg
Simrad SDP system and logic requirements.

Thus it was an another proud achievement for


ACSPL Engineers, to totally design and develop
this interface unit in- house which also happened
to be the first time such a system is indigenously
developed in India .

taking up all such challenging jobs and offering tailor-made solutions to our clients Irrespective make and age.
We have upgraded 17 following vessels to DP class. All these vessels are not designed for DP
class and all required modification to install a DP including cabling, mechanical modification,
feedback system, making suitable interface / thruster control to enable vessel to operate

controls, it is observed that most of the mechanical gear boxes / assembly remain in working
condition for years together, but electronic controls often give trouble after eight to ten years.

Azimuth Thruster Electronic Controls:


The azimuth propeller (Z type), is a versatile propeller. Its capability in terms of full
360 degree rotation of the pod there by facilitating rapid change in thrust
direction and in turn vessel direction makes it more popular. As we are very
closely associated with repairing of different types of propeller systems (CPP,
Azimuth, bow thruster and various steering gear), we learned there was a need
to develop controls for the same in-house indigenously. In our dedicated efforts
to continuously improvise and develop controls and system indigenously, our R&D
engineers have successfully developed the Azimuth Electronic Controls AIAZ 100
and Azimuth Thrust Angle Feedback Transmitter AIAZS 100. The same system has
been commissioned on a vessel which was originally fitted with SCHOTTEL azimuth
control.

For other type and make we can develop the design based on availability of the technical

Detection System' (OMD).

We have professionally trained marine control engineers for carrying

out exclusive service, repair, retrofit of complete 'OMD' system.


The OMD system continuously monitors the oil mist density in diesel engine crankcases for potential
explosive conditions and early detection of bearing failures. It serves as an essential safety device
which detects the build-up of oil mist, which if left un attended may result in explosion of engine
crankcase ultimately leading to heavy loss for the vessel. Hence it is an important safety and
functional requirement for the OMD system to be in working condition.
The most popular industry brands installed on countless ships are the 'Graviner' and 'Schaller' series
of the OMD system. We, at ACSPL have the necessary spares and know-how to service, repair and
retrofit the OMD.

Engine & Propeller RPM Monitoring System


RPM Controller for Engine with Start , stop & Interlocks with Turbo Charger RPM

This module is used to start Main engine safely from remote controller and local control panel.
This unit provided with two RPM measuring inputs, one for Engine RPM and one for Turbo
charger RPM. Two outputs showing reading on two independent RPM indicators , one for
Engine and one for Turbo charger in local as well as remote locations. This unit also having
various input and out put required for total automation of engine start / stop, and all safety
parameters.

WHY DOES PCB REPAIR?


It's not always practical or cost effective to return boards to the original manufacturer for repair. This
is especially true if the equipment is obsolete or the manufacturer has ceased trading. Most of the
manufactures upgrade their product periodically and stop production of old model PCB.
Hence most of the marine PCB is not available with original manufacture for replacement. Even if PCB
is available abroad, import will take long time which would not be afford by ship schedules.

WHY DO PCB'S FAIL?


Functional failure of components, Improper ope ation, variation of power, environmental conditions,
component ageing, damage to PCB tracks are some of the common reasons of PCB failure. Survey
indicates that normally most of the new systems breakdown within the first ten years.

WHA T A RE NORMA L FA ULTS ENCOUNTERED IN A PCB REPA IR ENVIRONMENT?


Functional IC failures, loaded power supply, input/output pins shorted to VCC or ground, multiplier
shorts, faulty de coupling capacitors, Bus faults, Fan out faults, Open/Short of passive devices, Track
shorts/opens are some of the most common problems encountered in a PCB.

CONVENTIONAL METHODS AND ITS LIMITATIONS


Service engineer uses various methods and tools of testing which include conventional equipment's like Oscilloscopes, Multi meter and logic analyzer
General testing Out-circuit testing is performed which may either require the PCB to be connected to the original circuit / equipment so as to get th
necessary input signals.
This way the whole / entire equipment is required for the testing and may become cumbersome. Another conventional method needs to remove th
PCB and test the components separately.
This may cause some major damage as removing and re-soldering has to be done and even the PCB tracks as well as components may get damaged.

HOW WE AT AKSHAY CONTROLS & SYSTEM S PV T. LTD. ARE DIFFERENT?


In order to avoid all the above-mentioned problems we in our labs try using new methods. Our
methods are the in-circuit testing ones, which do not require removing any components from the
PCB.
Moreover we at our labs use an intelligent in-circuit tester that tests the PCB at component level. It
stimulates appropriate inputs to a device, measures its output response and declares whether it is
functionally good or bad. Even complex natured LSI and MSI IC's are tested and the process is less
time consuming with good results.
Here we can repair the PCB's even with out circuit diagrams.

REVERSE ENGINEERING OF MARINE PCB


The need for REVERSE ENGINEERING OR RE ENGINEERING PCB's comes about for a variety of reasons chief among them is the need to replace an obsolete board that
is no longer available from the original manufacturer (OEM).When a ship is become old by ten years, OEM stop production or modify the electronic circuits, hence
replacements such PCB may not be available for replacement. Now a days most of the OEM is giving block diagram instead of circuit diagram. This block diagram is
not useful for servicing of PCBs.Often companies employ us to reverse engineer their own designs, because they have little or no documentation for their own
product or their current design firm or manufacturer refuses to release design details and manufacturing files.Another reason is cost. Some boards are considered
proprietary by the OEM when in fact they are not; they are just too expensively priced. Re-engineering a PCB assembly can provide improved or added
performance to an old process.New and improved components and techniques may be utilized during the reverse engineering process improving operations,
maintenance and support. PCB reverse engineering is done by hand. We also use computerized scanning programs because we have found that too much of a
circuit can be missed and you end up doing it by hand anyway. We believe that doing the job right the first time saves time and money. A design engineer checks the
emerging schematic to see that it makes sense. All too often, simple common sense is all that is needed to avoid costly errors.

A Rudder Angle Indicator is a device that can be either electromechanical or
electrical and displays the rudder angle of the ship. Rudder Angle Indicators
operate in real time, They display the rudder's position in degrees relative a zero
state which means the rudder is in position to steer the ship straight forward.
The Rudder Angle Indicator enables the reading of Rudder's deviation. The
device consists of a transmitter and several receivers situated on various places of
the ship. Different types of receivers can be connected to the same receiver.

Application:
Often a Rudder Angle Indicator will be a component of a Marine Autopilot

Specifically, this product is effective for use in Hydraulic Steering System because
it connects directly to the Rudder Linkage.

Importance:
A quick, positive, visual indication of deviation of Radar Angle is very important
when docking or maneuvering a ship or boat in tight quarters. When the ship is
moving slow, a greater angle on the rudder is required to turn the ship compared
to when it is moving fast as the ship turns and answers to its rudder sooner at higher
speeds than at lower speeds. Hence for continuous monitoring, Changing thr
rudder angle or position, Rudder angle indicator is extremely useful.

Digital Liquid Level display unit (ALD 100 WM) :
Akshtronica ALD 100 WM Tank Level Indicator unit is an advanced micro controller based user
friendly device for Continuous level measurement with Remote indication. The unit is
independent of the tank material (plastic, stainless steel or concrete) or the tank shape.

ALT-xxx Hydrostatic level Transmitter


Akshtronica ALT-xx
Hydrostatic level transmitter is
designed for the level measurement of liquids. The ALT-XXX is
water-proof pressure transmitter that is immersed into the liquid
together with its connection cable to the desired depth. The ALTXXX provides an analog electrical output signal that is
proportional to the applied hydrostatic pressure and hence, to
the immersion depth. The level probe is available as standard
with various cable lengths from 2.0M up to 20 M. Other lengths
are available upon request. The ALT-XXX is ideally suited for
applications in water/ sewerage plants / Diesel oil etc. Main
advantage of this sensor installation does not required to
inserting a fitting into the tank wall ( bottom / side) are not
permitted or are technically unviable.

The connection cable has a PU coating and contains a ventilation tube for pressure
compensation relative to the atmosphere. The maximum tensile strength of the cable is 1000 N. The
sensor housing is made from stainless steel and has a plastic cap to protect the stainless steel sensor
diaphragm. To meet diverse application requirements the level probe ALT-XXX is available in a
standard and an enhanced version. The enhanced version is available with a number of options
that extend the application range significantly. There is an integrated temperature measurement
option using a temperature sensor ( Pt100 element) to compensate the temperature variation of
the liquid.

Sewage Tank Level Remote Indicator


A reliable solution to continuous level measurement
in sewage tank with pre-alarm and high alarm.
Level Probe is specially designed for the application of sewage
tank. It is made up of high grade stainless steel and thick TEFLON
coated stainless steel which is in touch with sewage with a
minimum air gap of 15 mm. Since there is no moving parts unlike
conventional float it requires zero maintenance after installation
for probe inside the tank. AICLP/18xx in conjunction with Digital
Readout DRO48 & Programmable alarm unit PLA 4 will give
continuous sewage level in the tank and once level reach pre
alarm level, PLA 4 will give pre audio video alarm. This alarm can
be mute or reset. If the level further increase up to high level, PLA
4 will give high level alarm. This alarm can also mute or reset.

Two rod capacitive probe (AICLP/18xx): Two metal


probes lead at a well defined distance are connected to a high
frequency low alternate voltage. When immersed into a liquid the
probe forms a capacitor in an electric circuit. These capacitive
probes are used in conductive liquids for continuous level
measurement. Since
applied current is alternating type,
electrolysis and hence the coating will not take place. As the
sewage tank level increases, the measure of capacitance value
of the probe also increase.

DRO 48 is an advanced,
highly reliable micro controller based device used to convert
electrical signals like current, voltage, resistance , capacitance
etc into a digital reading. This reading can be presented in mm,
cm, degree, percentage, bar, angle etc. In case of sensor failure
and sensor cable short / break it will be automatically detected
and displayed. DRO 48 can be used for low and high level
application. In both case pre alarm and high ( low ) alarm led
indication and out put for external PLA 4 / 10 / 12.
Various FSD ( Full scale Display) is possible. For the sewage
tank level remote indicator unit FSD is 1800 mm . Pre Alarm at
1440 mm and high alarm at 1600 mm.

Level transducer is placed at the bottom of the tank whose level has to be measured. The
hydrostatic pressure which is directly proportional to the level
of the liquid acts directly on the transducer.
A waterproof enclosure mechanism is provided
for the protection of the transducer .Electric
cable lines are used to connect between the
transducer and the display unit. Also the effects
of air pressuree (atmospheric pressure) on
the liquid surface are transferred via a pressure
compensation tube. The electronics at the
display unit convert the signal which is linear
to the level of the medium.

Alt XXX Advantage Over Pneumatic Level Measurement:


No requirement of purge air.
Since the transducer is placed at the bottom of tank, the pressure signal (proportional to level) is

measured directly. This gives a better accuracy for level measurement than the onventional
systems.
The pneumatic tubes are replaced by electric cable lines, hence easy maintenance of the

system possible.
Since electric cable lines are used, no problems due to bending of cables and

Navigational Light panel NL 8 ( NL 13) has built in micro controller based programable alarm
annunciation control. The unit provides a visual and acoustic warning signal in case of failure of
navigational lamps.
