Moving a NetSupport DNA installation to new Hardware

Summary
This document describes the recommended procedure for moving a NetSupport DNA Installation from
one machine to another. This may be necessary when hardware is replaced or the NetSupport DNA
system out grows the hardware on which it is currently installed.
There are two methods for moving the NetSupport DNA installation. One for systems where the SQL
database for the NetSupport DNA Server is on the DNA Server machine and another for situations where
the SQL Database for NetSupport DNA is hosted on a different server. Please ensure that you follow the
correct procedure.
When moving a DNA Installation from one server to new Hardware, please ensure that you install the
same version on the new hardware as that running on the existing hardware.

Details
The process for moving your DNA Server is a two stage process. First you must move the DNA Server to
the new hardware, then, if the IP Address of the New DNA Server will be different to the old server, you
will also need to set the DNA Clients to point to the New Address.
Moving the NetSupport DNA Server when the DNA Server and SQL Database are on the same
Machine.
1. First backup the NetsupportDNA Database, you can do this either using SQL Enterprise manager
or as described in TD427.
2. On the existing DNA server stop the "NetSupport DNA server" service.
3. Install NetSupport DNA on the new server installing Client, Server and Console, during the setup
install MSDE, create a new Database and add the Evaluation License.
4. After the New installation is complete run the DNA Console and check that this is correctly
connecting to the New DNA Server.
5. On the new server stop the "Netsupport DNA Server" service.
6. Restore the Netsupport DNA Database using the SQL Enterprise manager or as described in
TD427.

11. Press the "Create User" button, you will then be prompted to logon to the SQL server, you must
specify a user name and password that has permissions to create an SQL server login.

Pointing a NetSupport DNA Client to a different Server Address.
When you logon to a NetSupport DNA Console, in the Server field of the logon screen you can specify
either an IP Address or the Hostname for your DNA Server. If you specify a Hostname, then when
deploying a NetSupport DNA Client from the console, the Client is deployed with the DNA Servers

hostname rather than the IP Address. If this is the case then you can simply change your Name
Resolution system to point the Hostname of the DNA Server to its new IP Address.
If your DNA Clients have been deployed with an IP Address for the server then these clients will need to
be updated so that they connect back to the correct IP Address for your New DNA Server.
If you are uncertain of which method was used when deploying your DNA Clients then, you will need to
look in the registry of one of your DNA Client stations. Use a registry editor to check the "ServerAddress"
value in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NetSupport Ltd\NetSupport DNA\Client. If this is
an IP Address then you will need to update the clients to point at the New IP Address. There are two
methods available to do this.

Edit the registry on each Client machine.

Re-Deploy the NetSupport DNA Client.

Changing the DNA Server Address at the client by Editing the registry.
1. At the Client machine run the Registry editor and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NetSupport Ltd\NetSupport DNA\Client
2. Edit the "ServerAddress" value and enter the new IP Address of the NetSupport DNA Server.
3. Restart the NetSupport DNA Client service.
Re-Deploy the NetSupport DNA Client.
Alternatively you can use the Client discovery and deploy utility in the DNA Console to Deploy the client to
each machine, when the Client is deployed it will change the client to connect to the new Address.
