REACTION PAPER ON
THE ROLE OF ACADEME IN HUMAN RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT
REPORTED BY: JULIUS B. PATENIO
The main goal of going to a prestige universities and colleges is to gain a degree and sooner or
later get the desired job to help the family and sustain day to day living. But are all fresh
graduates are qualified enough? Are theoretical concept gained from school is good enough to be
hired in a certain company where you want? Well basically, right from kindergarten up to tertiary
level we are indulge in the theoretical concept to acknowledge different lessons taught by
different professor because we believe that good education is a ticket for a bright future.
Life within the four corners in the universities and colleges is not the same into the real world. In
todays trend, company does not only need high grades and potential degree but also they are
looking into career related experience with potential skills. In this way, the company can
eliminate spending too much time and money into trainings, seminar and other programs that
you can adapt their environment and as well to in your job. Without experience, it drives to job
mismatch which is now one of the problems on the fresh graduates. To avoid such, while your
still a student the academe shall take actions on this. Instead of dwelling so much time in theory
or concepts, why not put it on application. Teaching method could be better like having a
collaborative learning, where it involves working together in small group to develop their own
answer through interaction and reaching interaction wherein they will develop their
communication skills, critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills, application of
knowledge and skills in real-world settings, complex problem solving and analysis, ethical
decision making and teamwork which plays a significant role when you are in a real world.
A mixture of a range of technologies or learning through the blending of contexts can also help
students to be well prepared. Technologies are running out today. Being well trained about
technology is one of your edges because company has to adapt what is the latest trend so that
they will not be left out and you too. Bridging could one of the techniques in order to break the
gap between academics and industry expectations. Lack of expertise in a particular domain, the
expectation is not met on what is reality are one of the gaps in actual scenario. Internship is one
the way that could the student experiences the real workplace in which they are usually one-term
experiences and are often in the summer to put on application what they have really learned
during their class time. Some trainings will also help the students to made an action about
their class discussion like blended trainings where students are send into a certain training
where analytical, critical and practical trainings will be thought to them with a
combination of a little class discussion that relate what they are doing in the field. By this
means those things that they have learned in the classroom will be generalized and be put in
action.

The Gap between students expectations is not equal to the industry expectations.
Knowledge and skills are not equal also to industries expectation. Industry interaction
with the students should be increased, frequent visits to corporate houses will make
students accustomed to corporate ways, more internships, workshops and live projects can
become a part of students curriculum, students should be more involved in placement
process to have better understanding of industry.
In my experience, as a graduate of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics, I worked first in
College teaching in Science related to Mathematics like Physics and Chemistry. In that manner
I learned to study those subjects but in my first year in teaching in the Government (DEPED), I
was assigned in Sarangani, Balot Island, Davao del Sur. I assigned to teach subjects which are
not related to my major subjects like Mapeh, and Social Studies. The students population are
too small that few teachers were assigned. Its hard for me to teach those subjects which I am
not interested. When I was transferred to a big school, teachers were assigned to departments
according to their expertise. In this matter, how about those teachers whose expertise are
teaching in Filipino and was assigned to subjects they are not accustomed to? How about
teachers working abroad as domestic helpers? My point is, Some teachers were going abroad for
bigger salaries although opposite to their expertise. Teachers in the Phillipines were not highly
paid. Salaries cannot compensate to the family needs and education, more are dependent on
loans. When should the government realize this? When should the salaries would be equal in
supporting thy needs? Employees are forced to do work not in their line of expertise as long as
it satisfies their family needs.
