Whatare'modelorganisms'?
Amodelorganismisaspeciesthathasbeenwidelystudied,usuallybecauseitiseasyto
maintainandbreedinalaboratorysettingandhasparticularexperimentaladvantages.
Overtheyears,agreatdealofdatahasaccumulatedaboutsuchorganismsandthisinitselfmakesthem
moreattractivetostudy.Modelorganismsareusedtoobtaininformationaboutotherspeciesincluding
humansthataremoredifficulttostudydirectly.
Wecandistinguishthreemajortypesofmodelorganism:
Geneticmodelorganisms
Thesearespeciesthatareamenabletogeneticanalysis,i.e.theybreedinlargenumbersandhaveashort

mutantsaregenerallyavailableandhighlydetailedgeneticmapscanbecreated.Examplesinclude
baker's
yeast
(Saccharomycescerevisiae),the
fruitfly
(Drosophilamelanogaster)andthe
nematodeworm
(Caenorhabditiselegans).
Experimentalmodelorganisms
Thesespeciesmaynotnecessarilybegeneticallyamenable(i.e.theymayhavelonggenerationintervals
andpoorgeneticmaps)buttheyhaveotherexperimentaladvantages.Forexample,the
