CHEM600 REFLECTION
Ever since my freshman year, upperclassmen have always been telling
me that 3rd year will probably be the most tedious and difficult. But as an
optimistic person, I have always confided in myself that maybe, they were just
being a little too exaggerated. And it turned out, I have never been so wrong
in my college life.
For me, third year has gone beyond my definition of "hard," but I guess
it's a new learning experience to be exposed in such a difficult environment.
Dealing with major courses, Comparative Anatomy and Biochemistry, at the
same time was overwhelming for me. Both courses require a lot more
patience and understanding compared to other courses that at the end of the
day, they just kind of drain me. Nonetheless, I have always enjoyed
Biochemistry more than my other chemistry courses, to be honest. It's one of
the courses that I truly appreciated and understood since I got to genuinely
learn from it, unlike other courses, which required rote learning. My favorite
subject in this course is the peptide sequencing because it was not the typical
reading lesson. It is like solving a puzzle, which appealed like a game to me. I
remember the feeling of fulfillment every time I solve a sequence. Other than
that, what I also appreciated from this subject is the professor. I have
encountered different professors in my stay in the College of Science and I
must say that Prof. Menguito is one of the best I had so far. Although she may
be strict, I appreciate where shes coming from. She also teaches very well
and exhibits mastery whenever she lectures. The regular short quizzes which
I used to hate, I learned to love because it reinforces the previous lessons I
have learned. From this, its a satisfying feeling when I get a high score on a
quiz because I know I learned and understood the lesson well. When I get a
low score, theres no one to blame but myself because the professor has
taught well.
Overall, I really enjoyed Biochemistry. I wish there will be more courses
like this that I will encounter in the future because it truly encourages learning.
For the professor, the College of Science is lucky to have a mentor like her.
