Chickpeas By: Kim Powell (kim@wsoc.com.au)

Old Season - the month long religious Muslim Ramadan festival commences on 11th Aug. 2010. Desi
chickpeas are in high demand during and at the conclusion of this celebration. Ideally chickpeas need to have
arrived that their destination prior to the commencement of the festival. Given a 25 day transit time by vessel to
Bangladesh and 28-34 days to the main ports of India & Pakistan, containerised peas would need to be shipped
by the end of June to arrive at the destination by late July which leaves a couple of weeks for local distribution
prior to festival commencement. Most buyers contracted June delivery peas in late April and early May with few
peas contracted in June. Currently there is little buying interest from the major chickpea traders for old or new
crop. Most of the overseas buyers have heard that the planting conditions in most growing areas of Australia
are ideal with the largest ever chickpea crop planted. So mostly, they are just waiting and hoping to get
chickpeas at a cheaper price closer to harvest. A severe adverse weather event in any of the major chickpea
growing areas may be the only thing to stimulate buying enquiry.
Prices - 09/10 $405/mt del packer, June 2010
10/11 $385/mt del packer, Oct/Nov 2010
