Brochure
Description:
A two-sided z-folding brochure created to
illustrate the quirky environment of Seattle.
Date:
7/16/16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.
Process:
I set up the layout in Adobe InDesign by splitting it
into four sections with the idea that I would cut the
layout diagonally and fold it into a z fold. I used
parallel diagonal lines throughout the design to
create flow and alternating monochromatic colors
to create unity. I chose photos that complemented
the teal color scheme and illustrated the quirky
aspects of Seattle. For the image of the coffee cup I
used the magnetic lasso tool in Adobe Photoshop
to remove the background of the image. I then
used the refine edge mask dialogue box to
smooth, feather, shift edge, and apply contrast to
the outline of the coffee cup. I then placed the
coffee cup into the brochure in InDesign where I
used the text wrap option to wrap my text around
the alpha channel of the image.

Event Ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser
using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.
Date:
5/13/16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Epson Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)
Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.
Process:
I first scanned the image of the girl in the bathing
suit and placed it in my Word document. I made
white shapes around the image to create its
triangle effect. In the publishing view I was able
to reorder those white shapes to the back. I then
added the other triangles in various sizes and
colors to create repetition, grouping, and visual
interest. I chose two different fonts: a bolder font
to emphasize the title, and a thin, simple font to
make the body copy easy to read. It is amazing that
I could make something like this in Word.

Letterhead
Description:
Matching letterhead and business card designed
using a personally created logo.
Date:
6/11/16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit my personal image.
Design consistent layouts for both a business card
and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.
Process:
I created the logo using simple triangle shapes and
text in Adobe Illustrator. After I created my logo I
opened two pages in InDesign and placed my logo
in the document. I placed the logo on the top right
corner of the first page for the letterhead. I then
positioned a light purple rectangle beneath the
design and adjusted the opacities of the triangles
to create a more subtle design. On the other side I
right aligned the contact information in an 8pt sans
serif font to contrast the large old-style logo font.

Montage
Description:
An uplifting montage made by blending of three
images, and use of typography.
Date:
5/28/16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together, using masks.
Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
I placed the cactus background image in an 8.511
document. I opened the hand image and used the
lasso tool, feathered it by 100, and selected the
desired frame, then placed it in the cactus image.
I added a mask to the hand layer and with black
paint and with 15% opacity, soft-edged brush I
painted away the hard image edges of the hand
image. With a larger black brush at 20% opacity, I
blended the image into the cactus background, so
it looks like the hands are melting into the scene.
I repeated the process with the clouds and by
blending them with a mask and brush tool. I added
some type with two contrasting fonts and I added
a soft white ellipse, by blending a with the brush
tool, behind the text to make it more legible.

Text Wrangler
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as n .png for a
web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating a
logo and how it appeals to the target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo
and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic
understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in zipped folder to attach
as one file.
Process:
I created this web page using only TextWrangler.
After completing the basics of HTML by including
my image and the font I wanted to use I attached
a pre-made CSS document. I opened my logo in
Photoshop and used the eyedropper tool to get
the exact color from my logo to use in elements
of my web page. I changed my text to Maitree and
included the link to the font in my HTML so that
when opened on any computer it will have the
correct font. I changed the opacity of the white

Logos
Description:
Three logo variations for the same company.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
Process:
I really wanted to capture the unique aspects of
this vintage item company. This design is a logo
I created in Illustrator. After designing 3 different
rough drafts with different color schemes, fonts,
and design principles. I then asked ten different
people to pick which design they liked best. The
most votes went to the design I liked best, so I
decided to refine that design. I used the shape tool
to make the trees, and then changed the opacity to
make the overlap visual.I wanted the design to be
minimalistic and simple, but still professional and
visually appealing.

Business Card
Description:
A matching letterhead and business card designed
using a personally created logo.
Date:
6/11/16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit my personal image.
Design consistent layouts for both a business card
and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.
Process:
I created my business card design, front and
back. I used the same triangles, logo, and purple
rectangle that I used in the letterhead design to
extend unity from the letterhead to the business
card. The same opacity is applied to the business
card triangles. I right aligned the information on the
back, just as I did on the letterhead. I put a black
stroke to identify where the edge of the card is
located; it is not part of the design.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Canon PowerShot Camera
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skill.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image and
download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and
saturation levels.
Process:
I first chose a color scheme from the Visual
FOCUS textbook for my design; I chose analogous
green, because I love simplicity. I then went to
the gardens and took my photo. After opening it
in Photoshop, I adjusted the levels, sharpness,
selective color, and vibrancy of the image. I also
used my eyedropper tool to select the exact colors
from the Visual FOCUS color wheel. I then created
an 8.5 x 11 layout and added text, color swatches,
and repeating design elements in those same
colors to create unity and repetition. Again, I used
the eyedropper tool to choose the correct colors.

Flier
Description:
A black and white promotional flier to promote a
graduate leadership conference.
Date:
5/7/16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate
typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic
flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and
InDesign document to keep links intact.
Process:
My first step was to create several different
sketches of possible layouts. Then I used one
of my sketches as a guide to form my design in
Adobe InDesign. I emphasized the title by using
capitalization and surrounding it by whitespace.
The black triangles on the sides create contrast
and repetition. I also stressed the date, time, and
location of the conference by making it larger than
the body copy. I was given the logo, image, and
content for this flier.
