Introduction
The UK have been welcoming Indian students to
its universities and colleges for over 100 years.
Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and David
Cameron have named 2016 as the UK-India year
of Education Research and Innovation, and so I
am delighted in this special year to present the
GREAT Britain Scholarships 2016. Under this
initiative, 291 new scholarships will be offered,
worth over 1.5 million, in partnership with 45
universities. A total of 59 undergraduate and 232
postgraduate awards will be offered for a range of
subjects ranging from engineering and law to art
and design and information technology across
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Studying in the UK is a truly international
experience, last year over 493,000 students from
over 200 countries, including over 20,000 from
India, studied in the UK. We are home to some of
the most respected universities in the world, with
the top four of the worlds top ten universities and
30 of the top 200 in the UK. I hope these
scholarship awards help more Indian students
study in the UK.
I trust this initiative will help forge a stronger long
term relationships between India and the UK.

38% of Nobel Laureates have studied in the U.K. Since the first prize
was awarded in 1901, 860 individuals have received the award. Of the
winners, 131 had studied at an overseas university for some or all of their
higher education. Fifty out of those 131 [38% of international students]
had studied in the UK, compared to 37 [28%] who had studied in the
USA, and 23 [18%] who had studied in Germany.

The UK has a global reputation for excellence in education and skills. It

is the second most desired destination for higher education (13% of
international HE students prefer UK) according to the Universities UK
report.

Of all Heads of State who studied at universities abroad, 32 per cent

attended universities in the UK. The UK is ten times more likely to
produce a world leader UK universities produces one world leader per
fifty thousand graduates. Notable alumni from UK universities include
the Australian prime minister Tony Abbott, Queen Margrethe II of
Denmark, and Hassan Rouhani, the Iranian president.
