Running Head: LOOKING FORWARD

Abstract

Running Head: LOOKING FORWARD

This paper will discuss Domain F: Developing as a professional educator and the
California Teaching Performance Expectancies that are included in Domain F. In
addition, this paper will explain the artifacts that have been chosen for my portfolio.
Lastly, this paper will discuss the five-year plan that I have created with explanations as
to why I have chosen these different areas of professional development.

Looking into

the future and setting goals is an important process when starting a career. By creating a
five-year plan, focusing on professional development, I am able to direct my
development in different areas each year in order to become a better educator. Through
Domain F: Developing as a professional educator, there are two California Teaching
Performance Expectancies. They are: TPE 12, Professional, Legal, and Ethical
Obligations and TPE 13, Professional Growth. I have chosen three artifacts to show my
professional growth as well as plans for the future. Through my five-year plan, I am able
to define areas of growth and ways to meet that goal.
I have chosen to use my resume, letters of recommendation, and a literature
review of why professional development is important as artifacts for this domain. I
decided to use my resume in this domain because it shows what I have done so far in
becoming a professional educator. It shows my background and the different experiences
that I have had as they have lead to my professional growth. My letters of
recommendation are used to display my professional qualities as seen through my
supervisors eyes. These letters are examples for TPE 12: Professional, Legal, and
Ethical Obligations, as they demonstrate that I, take responsibility for student academic
learning outcomes (CTC, 2013). Finally, I decided to write a literature review about the
article, Teacher STEM Perception and Preparation: Inquiry-Based STEM Professional

Development for Elementary Teachers by Louis Nadelson, Janet Callahan, Patricia

Pyke, Anne Hay, Matthew Dance, and Joshua Pfiester. I decided to write a review about
STEM because this is an area that I am interested in and part of my five-year plan. These
different artifacts demonstrate the California Teaching Performance Expectancies 12 and
13 as they illustrate my professional growth.
My five-year plan consists of me continuing my education in order to become a
better educator. My district offers different trainings throughout the school year as well as
a summer institute. As I am a new teacher, I will take advantage of these trainings so that
I can continue to grow. Also, a personal professional goal of mine is to obtain my single
subject credential in mathematics. I love working in elementary school, however, I want
to better myself and give myself the opportunity to grow and challenge myself. Next
year, I would like to be able to attend the Apps event, which includes trainings on
different Google apps. As my students are issued Chromebooks, it will be beneficial to
me to learn about different apps for them to use. I have been able to work with a few
different apps, however I do not know how to use them all. One of my goals is to stay up
to date on technology and apps, by going to this training; I will start to meet my goal. I
also want to attend trainings for working in English Language Learners. I work in a
district with a high population for English Language Learners; therefore, it is important
that I understand strategies and methods when working with these students. As stated
above, I have a love for STEM, and I would enjoy participating in a STEM workshop.
This would also be beneficial to me if I decide to take the path of teaching mathematics
in middle school. This workshop will allow me to hone in on a specific grade level as
well as a broad picture of STEM. Lastly, I would like to become a national board certified

teacher. According to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Board
certification allows teachers to hone their practice, showcase their talent in the classroom,
and demonstrate their dedication to their students and their profession. I feel very
passionate about working with my students and developing as an educator, by becoming
a national board certified teacher, I will be able to show that passion and love for
teaching.
As I look ahead to my future, I am able to create short-term goals, which will help
in my development as an educator. By understanding Domain F and the two TPEs that
are a part of this domain, I am able to see how important it is to continue to develop as a
professional educator. Teaching is not just a job, this is a career and with a career, there
are always areas to grow in and continue to learn.
