EMAC and EMST

EMAC: Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises

The simulation-based Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) course provides training in
the management of anaesthetic emergencies. It consists of five modules run over two and a half days
covering topics such as airway management, human performance, cardiovascular emergencies,
anaesthetic emergencies and trauma management.
The course is a valuable educational opportunity and a requirement of the curriculum, however trainees
will not be provided with opportunities to complete workplace-based assessments during the course.
The course may be undertaken at any time after the completion of introductory training. However due
to the focus on crisis management we believe that trainees who have completed at least 12 - 18
months of anaesthesia training are most likely to benefit from participation in the course. It is strongly
recommended that trainees undertake EMAC prior to commencing provisional fellowship training.
EMAC is delivered by simulation centres in Melbourne (St Vincents and Southern Health), Sydney,
Perth, Brisbane, Wellington, Auckland and Hong Kong. These centres have been accredited by ANZCA
to provide the EMAC course.
Please contact individual centres for bookings and inquiries. Centre contact details are provided below.

EMST: Early Management of Severe Trauma

The Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) course is an intensive course in the management of
injury victims in the first two hours following injury. It emphasises life-saving skills and systematic
clinical approach to managing severe trauma. It is a two and half day course adapted from the
Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course of the American College of Surgeons in 1988.
EMST is offered by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). For further details and
registration information refer to the RACS website.

Accreditation of centres
ANZCA accredits simulation centres across Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia, to offer the
EMAC course to ANZCA trainees. Accreditation requires an onsite review by the College to assess a
centres ability to offer EMAC in accordance with ANZCA standards. Centres applying for accreditation
should contact emac@anzca.edu.au
