Published by CRC Press | Taylor & Francis Group, due in June 2014
Biotechnology in Medical Sciences by Prof Firdos Khan is an anthology of different
facets , that collectively constitute the field of Medical Biotechnology
Medical Biotechnology are new avatars in our country and of late many institutions
/universities, including medical schools have started to incorporate this as a part of the
curriculum , mainly integrated within the realms of Biochemistry . There has always been
dearth of good standard books on Medical aspects of Biotechnology and the reviewer
feels that Biotechnology in Medical Sciences by FirdosAlam Khan, can suitably fit in the
bill .
Approach :Biotechnology caresses all the related sub -specialties of Medicine
--genetics, recombinant DNA technology, bacteriology , virology , Pharmacogenomics,
immunology and ethics, and their practical applications ranging from drugs and
vaccines ---to molecular basis of disease , stem cells, , and gene therapy , These have
been aptly represented in this book (as evident from the table of contents) justifying its
title Biotechnology in Medical Sciences
This textshould be accessible to students in medicine for whom the subtle knowledge of
use of biotechnologyis critical for understanding of the molecular aspects of diseases,
The book is to be proved - equally useful for Biotechnology students ,more so for those-with research fervor and orientation..
Content: The book is divided into 15 chapters addressing the whole demeanorof
Biotechnology dealing with Medicine The two chapters cover topics in a clear and
articulate manner, with consistent formatting that supports introductory information with
specific subtopics in the chapter, ending with summary, scholars achievement ,
knowledge builder and adequate references . The materials are comprehensive ,well
structuredand very well written Each of the two chapters is replete with appropriate and
schematic diagrams, images, and tables which makes the flow of presentation all that
smooth and serene.. .
Highlights/Features: The single strength of this book is the amount of important
information packed into a concise text book The basic concepts and principles are
adequately handled and there is plenty of interesting and practical material for the basic
audiences targeted.Knowledge builderand the scholars achievement --explaining the
related items and remembering the contributions of novel scientists of related topics
are a welcome enhancements and makes it all the more readable. Chapter highlighting
Nano technology is particularly to be mentioned for finding its place in the book for its
being pertinent and relevant .
ReviwersAssessment : After reviewing the amount of information provided and
comparing it to the intent of the author Prof Firdos Khan, I find that this book lives up to
its title---. Biotechnology in Medical Sciences and highly recommend the text to those
who require a concise and practical reckoner ,available for everything that is related to
medical aspect of Biotechnology The authoris to be commended on an excellent job in
preparing this text book.
Of course among uses of Stem cell Technology may be-- a mention about effect of stem
cell transplant to one AIDS patient in Germany could be added A bone marrow
transplant containing stem cells from a matched donor has been used to restore the
immune system. Of the HIV patient The transplant was performed from a donor with 2
copies of CCR5-32 mutation gene, Following the transplant, HIV has not been detected
in the patient , hypothesizing doctors. cells expressing the CCR5-32 variant protein
lack both the CCR5 receptors on their surfaces, thereby conferring resistance to a broad

range of HIV variants After over six years, the patient has maintained the resistance to
HIV and has been pronounced cured of the HIV infection
The simple review of Biotechnology in Medical Sciences by FirdosAlam Khan is
this: if you read this book cover to cover, you will learn a lot about different aspects of
Biotechnology in Medical Sciences . The engaged reader will make considerable
headway with this book even outside the medical setup
