INTRODUCTION. “sPaplagey ” of aera or “ upagig,” as it is generally known, was edited for the first time by Dr. Zacharie, which was printed in 1882 and published in Berlin, A revised edition of it was brought out by the late Mr. K.G. Oak, in 1918, The present edition is an improvement on both these editions. ararara is divided into six sections. In the first three sections the meanings of each word are given respectively in full, half and quarter verses, The fourth is a supplementary section of quarter verses and fifth and sixth deal with the indeclinables which are also arranged respectively in half and quarter verses. Except this division there is no other systematic arrangement in the az. Unlike other ats, upatsta moreover, is not a complete att buta qe, the words being put together without any order like other situs, where: words are generally arranged in the order of final consonents. No such order being adopted in this aaa, it goes very difficult to trace any word of which the mean- ing is to be ascertained. In the first edition the words of which different meanings are given in the verse were required to he searched after reading the whole verse and this task becomes the more difficult to the beginner when the word was either combi- ned with another word under some Sandhi rule or was compounded with another word, I have in the present edition underlined the words whose different senses are given in the verses. So the reader at once catches the principal word in the verse and knows that the rest are its homonyms, T have also taken precaution to give the number of senses of the word in numerical figures just after it, which is printed in the margin of the book just at the beginning or at the end of the verse in which its meanings are given. Iam confident that these two new improvements would facilitate the understanding of the work better. As regards the date of wrva the late Mr, Oak has given conclusive proofs which I quote below in full :— “As regards the age of area, scholars are divided in opi- nion, Some assign him to the 12th century while others claim 2 for him a higher antiquity than that of the Amarakosa itself, ’s commentary on the save, which has been recently published, affords some clue to the age of! this writer, Numerous quotations from apaa’s work given by ¢iveriva enable us to ascertain the highest and the lowest limits within which araq can be placed, We have already given our reasoris for assigning the smekrr to the fourth ‘century ( 300-400 }; and since atcenfty belongs to the 11th century, ara must be placed between the 5th and the 10th century, sacata’s priority to arr can be easily established from the following considerations— (@) In commenting on aamgitraniatd siftreqif sx arg (Amara- TL. 7. 33. ) ateeu@d, says- srtay ante, wirey: go HRT arg sea, Taha (He) sal meTRE-HAR Areata | STASIS a, WaT aes ary SMT ‘afaht Ag In his remarks on #y (Amara I. 3. 2.) avez says- a: TONEY a AF aT AteTrT: | Tn his comments on gre ( Amara, [. 7, 1.) ateqaae says-meaaey Caraga BaTeat FR, WE: TATA WRT afeé faz, It is evident from these that in the opinion of «teanta, aaa was posterior to Amarasimha, (b) In the body of the #a itself- aftr ater girarigaret: 1 Prager 2 arta RA Bor TH (v.45 ) by the word yarari, ara refers to Amarasimha, In the anit of arav#ra, such passiges 9 i WEST. Again aq-aa who is prolix, and not succinct like Amara, copies the latter here and there. IIT. 3, 98-99) This shows that Amarasimha was prior to "Ita. ‘We shall now proceed to show that rq was posterior to Chandragomin* and aifsgra, who belonged tothe 5th century. In one of the opening stanzas— Rees zesRCT: | Tae aT MAY Tag Ul ‘rr says that he has studied three different grammars and five fEmgmays. One of the three grammars and one of the five fmgurras, it may be inferred, must be that of Chandra- gomin. In the stanza-Senrfat goearay ah zee AAT ( v. 426) the word ara is given as $4-q like af which is sanctioned by Chand- ra’s wnitaa (L. 90), while according to qiiti’s eor.@aa (111.446), the word should be ae4j: (Nom. sing.), So the word fae in verse 54 is correct according to Chandragomin’s grammar and not according to qfai’s grammar,} wifeaa uses the form aeaa in Tacoma Bae (R. V, 64), This form is not given by Amarasimha in III. 3. 143. araa notices both the forms zq and wemq in verse 80. aafsya uses the word Wit in Faerie: (R. V. 43 ) in the sense of sa which mam gives in verse 653. The noun amg is generally used by aia in the sense of ‘an antelope or deer’ and rarely in the sense of a Chutaka bird. saa gives these two sonses only in amenanaea. weamagaa (R. VI. 30), is explained by area thus-waige the comm.' of aicenitz, we have shown that Amarasimha was a Bauddhaand preceded the Banddha grammarian Chandragomin. An additional evidence of this fact is found in the verse— BO: RATT: IA: TTT: | séagesing: aedg: deasnat: UU (Amara, II. 6. 47) According to Chandragomin the forms 9g,'#a, xe4g, ought to be aa, da, weit by the Chandra Sutras dose: and seatgr (IV 4, 119-120). The forms o#, da, seis, given by Amarasimha are correct according to the Panini Sutras Teéat siggy and earn CV. 4. 129-130.) {See Notes to Prof, Pathak’s Meghaduta, 2nd Ed, p. 83. 4 satan srqe Gra awa av. 58). From what is said above and from what aay says in one of the concluding verses ( siftrarat wader sar AO gaeneNe | wet TeARaet Ay arse a ) it will appear that he lived after Chandragomin and =f@aqe i: ¢, afte the fifth century. Asupa alludes to avemf@< in the last verse ( war ater after gator a Sera | ae THRETTTY PURE Sere: tl) we shall not be far wrong, if we assign him to the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 7th century. This opinion is further confirmed by thefact that the feminine form qieat (v. 377), unknown to Amarasimba, actually appears in the fanaa of UREA who belongs to the 9th century, So also the isenses of the words dia and a, viz. agetienit and ceariermt, given by ura in stanzas 100 and 292, and not given by Amarasimha, are assigned to those words by strerar who flourished in the 6th century, in his aq on the wwragien (IX. 22.) On acomparison of area's ivaidtrget with Durga’s ata quoted by diventq in his commentary on the stacara we find that Darga not only borrows very often from but sometimes, improves upon sia. Thus-ghieet a8 ( aft-p. 194) is borrowed from waa 723 and sqataa: whet BOR ( Ait-p. 200) from saat 539, aaron diparya (sit-p, 221) is an instance of uvm’s (v. 191 ) imitation by Durga, aera ay ait Bavaety (aie-p.200) is an improvement upon ava 633, aswell as Tea arraTeT: (ite-p. 220) upon ayaa 140, Amarasimha gives #7 (a ), while Uae giv- es a (ma ). lurga copies Amara in all the senses but follows ama in giving the word as apa (see i%-p. 220) As aivenaa in his commentary on the amrait of Amarasinha gives the additional senses of araa, first after each word and quotes verses afterwards giving additional homonyms ouly from Durga, he considers ayaa to be prior to Darga. The latter may proba- bly be a lexicographer of the 8th century.” 5 aaTARTATET. Part of this it was printed as an appendix of the waaaita (Oak's edition) under the name of zemma, from an incomplete Ms. in the possession of the late Mr. Oak. He could not procure another complete Ms. of it and hence it was printed under a mis- leading title terata found in the Ms, referred to above. ‘fhere are several Mss, of ter@rt in the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Ins. titute Poona, but they deal with either Vedanta or Tarka. While going through the Mss. of the monosyllabic lexicons in B. 0. R. I. I came across one Ms. (No. 759 of 86-92) which exactly tallied with the above referred to wernt. Itis also an - imcomplete Ms. in itself as it neither gives the name of the author nor any introductory verses, though it gives meaning of all let- ters beginning with = and ending with a. Another Ms. of the same lexicon was found out, through the courtesy of Vyankat Shastri of Bhandarkar Institute of Poona, in Grantha characters under the name ames. Itisa complete Ms, and gives in- troductory verses and the name of author also. I have taken up in the present edition, the name and the introductory verses as they are, without any alter.tion, It has in all six ares, containing lexicons of one, two, three, and four words, one of miscellaneous words, and one containing all indeclinable words. The Ms. being in Grantha character Iam at the mercy of the transcriber, The whole of it could not be got transcribed in time. Mr, Vyenkat Shastri, however, was kind enough to transcribe the first ame i. e. monosyllabic section which was badly needed for this edition, As the correct name of the aa (amrizetarer ) has been found and its contents are similar to the ttt named ammisizda of % (often quoted as Haz by wary and swenrae ), I tried through Dr, N. G, Sardesai,.L. M, & S., to find out if there be any such aia as marco in Devanagriin the Bhandarkar Institute. To my great joy and surprise there did exist this tt with the same name (No, 115 of 1885-1). It contains all the aes excepting first ae printed in the infra. With the help of these two Mss, (Granth and Devanagari) I have every hope of bringing out a cor- rect and a complete edition in the near future. Author, his life and work. The name of the author of this aaricemrer is gervea whichis toldby:the author himself in the third verse of the Introduction viz, 6 atst mente aericemret weitssqerg | states areca ATTA Ul He also tells in the same introduction that this monosyllabic lexicon is not the only work written hy him. He has also compos- ed lexicons of two, three, and four words; ono of miscellaneous words and one containing all indeclinebles cf. _ Srdvafitamiraniaita: | dcieameraity teen Ul This geresa is known also as gerqTE ATA, WAT, TSA OF WERT. He seems to be learned for he writes of himself as aqeenaeraagu7at (Introduction to 2). The verses which he composed are also lucid, clear and have an uninterrupted flow. His Guru’s name is died cf, eiaremmné = Ant aver Rasrarzice t Nothing more of him is known for the present except that ° he was theson of Chaicha, minister of Bukka II and was appointed asa general by King Harihara IT of axarmcy who flourished in the second half of the 14th certury, ( Forgotten Empire p. 48). ‘at seems to be his surname and aieaia, wea, etc. seem to be his titles which mean general. Bhaskar seems to be his name, It is not quite impossible that, though he was a general, he covld compose lexicons, for in former times Kings and their Officers were learned and could write on diverse subjects. It may be even, that he might have got this work written by some one ascribed to his name like many Kings and (fticers of former times, But nothing can be said with certainty at this stage for want of full and authentic information, Some important points in settling the text. Thave taken the printed text in the first edition as the base and then compared the other two Mss, with it, Ihave spoken of the Ms. from the Bhandarkar Institute Poona, as B and Malayalam Ms.as M. When the version of the Mss. was found to be superi- or and giving a clearer sense than the original printed text, version of the Mss. was chcsen as text in the place of original printed version. But where the orginal printed text was equally good and clear tle version of the Ms. is given asa reading at the foot of the page. In this way thore are nearly seven to eight places in the text where Thave preferred the version of the Ms. to that of the original printed text. I shall cite one for example. In the original printed text the meaning of the word ‘q’ were not given at all. In fact the word @ could not be found and. ro 7 many senses of the word ‘wy’ were given, The meanings of ‘a’ begin from the 26th verse in which meanings of 3: are given; meanings of st and 3 will be found in the 27th verse. The first half of the 28th verse gives the meanings of ft and the second half of the verse runs as follows: —a: @t arat TUR TA aie PAH | Ji will thus be seen that the meaning of q: are given again in the 28th verse although they had been previously. treated in the 26th verse as stated ahove, which in my opinion seems redun- dant. The above referred to line runs as followsin the M. Ms:— SE Ot aoa ereTHRES GAL ATT Ee | Thus it will be seen that M. Ms. reads ¢ for = and this read- ing is preferable as there was no necessity of giving the meanings of st again when they were already dealt with previously. And the lexicon would also remain so much incomplete if the word g is altogether omitted from it. I have, therefore, replaced # for # in my text. I have in this way changed my text in seven to eight places but I have not changed a single word unless Ihad a support of either of the two Mss. for doing so. In one place only, I have changed the serial order of the verses without any authority from either of the Mss, e. g. Sasa A srsaet Resi cea Nest ert 3 FS ere eRTSTTET: Raret aeh Sarah aT agrrne: aq sett (latter half of the 77th and 78th verse from my text). I think, however, that this change is quite essential for the following reasons :-— ‘Tho above referred to verses were not in the original printed text. Infact the original printed text ends here abruptly as the further part of the Ms, from which it was printed, was torn and unintelligible. The B Ms. gives only later half of the 78th Verse 6, g<. 78h Samarh ST arg: Barz | and does not give the other two lines. M. Ms. only gives all the three lines, These three lines give meanings of the word @ and wat. Both Band M Mss. concur in giving these verses just after the meanings of (@z and before those of =. TE we read the whole of the lexicon the serial order of the vowels and consonents is nowhere broken. In this case only the 8 meanings of @ come before the meanings of ¥, ¥, @. It appears a litéle bit strange. The meanings of @ ought naturally to come after the meanings of ¥, ¥, #. a8 & is a conjunct consonent beginning with q. The meanings of #, which is made up of ¥, and 4, are given after the meanings of ¥. I have, therefore, changed the serial order of the verses for the reasons stated above, and placed these verses just after the meanings of a and before these of g. This arrangement does not change the meaning but on the contrary serial order of the letters is kept intact. Thave also given inthe margin the number of senses in numerical figures just after the word whose meanings are given in the verses and have also underlined those words in the verses. ‘The last and most pleasant work which is by no means a great task, that remains now is to offer hearty thanks to those who helped me in the work. The first and foremost person to whom I owe a debt of gratitude is Dr. N. G. Sardesai, r.m. &s, the enter- prising Manager of the Oriental: Book Agency, of Poona. This work would not have seen the light without his help and kind sug- gestions, I have, therefore, to offer hearty thanks tohim. Ihave also to thank Mr. G. 8. Sardesai of Kolhapur without whose aid the book would not have been brought out so quickly and correctly.
