Project Managers perspective on ALE

exercise
We want to make sure we know what is the real
status of offshore installation before we touch it
Consolidate all available information using 3DVR
Build & Test it online in parts using available information
using AGILE project management processes
Check against what is existing in multiple visit campaigns
Train everyone and Make Decisions using the SIM model

COMPUTING TECHNOLOGY
Game Changer tool for ALE
Utilize
1.
2.

3DVR
Big Data & Analytics
Later AI (artificial intelligence).

3D Technology
As a TOOL to build a technically accurate
engineering model of the facility

VIRTUAL REALITY
As a TOOL to simulate the behavior and/or
performance of the facility based on different
variables

BIG DATA
As a TOOL to assemble all historical data
relevant to the installed facility incl text, image,
video

AGILE Project Management as a PROCESS

to iteratively perform ALES

3DVR TECHNOLOGY as a game changer

defines the Process & People requirements for
ALE

TECHNOLOGY Factors
Make a decision to know everything about the
facility
Collect all info frm start to finish and dump it in a
search-bin at a specialized Data Center
Adopt a 3DVR format (non-proprietary or opensource at BASIC level and analyze using
specialist sw/hw)
Measure everything accurately
REBUILD the facility virtually and SIMULATE
future performance
11

PROCESS Factors
Make a decision to build and do everything
virtually!
Adopt AGILE Risk-Safety Management
methodologies to build 3D-model and turn it into a
SIMULATION pack
Develop a standardized baseline SIM pack
Be flexible and ADJUST for each facility
EXECUTION pack to follow SIM pack planned
over several CAMPAIGNS

12

PEOPLE Factors
Make a decision on getting all relevant
EXPERIENCE viz Historical performance data on
facility
Train CURRENT and NEW operations/project
staff online using 3DVR SIM Models
Make all decisions based on SIM Model of Facility
Everyone incl Top Management can see/feel what
happens to facility in 3DVR
Be clear as to WHO IS RESPONSIBLE for overall
performance of facility.
13

CONCLUSION
Make sure we know what is really going on out
there before trying to force more profit out of an
oil field beyond its design life
Adopt iterative project management processes to
gain knowledge & experience of a facility and to
record it for control purposes
Train all relevant staff to utilize all available updated
information, coordinate with all parties and to make
well informed decisions.
Technology today allows it no excuse for not doing it.

It only takes one fatal error to make all abv

worthwhile

NOTES:
Data isn't the real world, it only describes it. At best
Technology can only simulate/define 70-80% of reality and
the balance 20% unknown has to be managed by the Project
Team responsible for production.

16

NOTES 2
The best advantage of 3DVR is that we can
gather and integrate data n show/coordinate with
a wide group of disciplines - visually - together or
separately, and get the message across. ....
Project Integration Management issues resolved.
