The Timothy C. Hauenstein Reynolds
Township Library received 87 new books
thanks to the Libri Foundation grant with
the help of the Friends of the Library.

The new books will be available for check
out after the open house.
The Libri Foundation was established
in 1989 for the sole purpose of help-
ing rural libraries acquire new, quality,
hardcover children’s books they could
not otherwise afford to buy. Since Octo-
ber 1990, the Foundation has donated
over $4,000,000 worth of new children’s
books to more than 2,800 libraries in 49
states, including Alaska and Hawaii.
The Foundation supports the concept
that children who learn to enjoy reading
at an early age continue to read through-
out their lives. In order to develop a love
of reading, children must have access to
books which stretch their imaginations,
touch their emotions, expand their hori-
zons.
For many children in rural areas, the
local public library is often their primary
source of reading material. Many rural
schools either have no library or the li-
brary is inadequate to meet the needs of
the students. At a time when more and
more children and their parents and
teachers are using the public library, these
same libraries are facing increasing finan-
cial hardships and are unable to buy the
books their young readers need.
The Foundation works with the li-
brary’s Friends of the Library or other
local organizations because we believe
in community involvement and want to
encourage and reward local support of li-
braries. The Friends, or other local spon-
sors, can contribute from $50 to $350
which the Foundation matches on a 2-to-
1 ratio. Thus, a library can receive up to
$1,050 worth of new, quality, hardcover
children’s books through the Foundation’s
BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program.
The local librarian, familiar with the
needs of the library and the community,
selects the books the library will receive
from the Foundation’s 700-title booklist,
which has been highly praised by par-
ticipating librarians for the quality and
variety of fiction and nonfiction titles of-
fered. The majority of books have been

CMH Board
officers elected
Annually the Board of Direc-
tors at Newaygo CMH elected the
Executive Committee. On Tuesday
May 11, 2010 the following officers
were elected. Adele Hansen of
Newaygo was re-elected as chair.
Helen Taube of Fremont was elect-
ed vice-chair; JoAnn VandenBerg
of Sand Lake, re-elected secre-
tary; and Mary Anderson of White
Cloud was elected treasurer.
Ms. Hansen has been a mem-
ber of the board since 1997 and
now serving her second term as
Board Chair. She is actively in-
volved locally on with the Michi-
gan Association of Community
Mental Health Boards looking out
for the mental health of Newaygo
County residents.
Ms. Taube has been a board
member since 1993. In the past
she has served as chair and vice-
chair and is grateful for the oppor-
tunity to serve in this role again.
She remains active on a commu-
nity level advocating for persons
with mental illness and develop-
mental disabilities.
Ms. VandenBerg has served on
the Board since 2005. As one of
the “youngsters” of the Executive
Committee she reports continuing
to learn and appreciate the impor-
tance of mental health services to
all citizens.
Ms. Anderson has been with the
Board since 1992. She has served
in numerous capacities on the Ex-
ecutive Committee. She is also a
member of the executive board of
the Michigan Association of Com-
munity Mental Health Boards, is
a member of the National Coun-
cil for Community Mental Health
Boards Board of Directors. She

SIDNEY — Three local groups have
struck a deal that will benefit the commu-
nity at large.
Officials from Montcalm Community
College, the Montcalm County 4-H Fair
Association and Montcalm County signed
a purchase agreement for the Montcalm
County 4-H Fairgrounds property during

Sidney.
MCC is purchasing the 15-acre parcel,
located on Hillcrest Street next to Green-
ville High School, for possible future ex-
pansion of its Michigan Technical Educa-
tion Center (M-TEC). The deal also paves
the way for construction of a new fair-
grounds to begin on a 63-acre site located
near the corner of M-91 and Peck Road in

Fair Board President Pat Schuster said will be
celebrated throughout the week-long event
July 4-10.
“The fair board is extremely grateful for
the cooperation between Montcalm Town-
ship, MCC and the county commissioners,”
Schuster said. “This is our last year having
a fair at the site, and we have several special
events planned. This is a very exciting time for
us. Our board members, fair association mem-
bers, local officials and community members
have been working on plans to develop a new
fairgrounds for more than 10 years, and we
are excited to be moving forward.”
Schuster said the sale of the current fair-
grounds in Greenville will allow crews to be-
gin phase one of the fairgrounds project at its
new site, including fencing, grading and add-
ing water and electricity to the property.
“We’re excited about the future of the 4-H
fair,” said Montcalm County Board of Com-
missioners’ Chairman Patrick Carr. “The 4-
H fair organization has maintained a strong
group even through these poor economic
times. I tip my hat to them for the amount of
work they’ve done and for working through
this downturn of the economy. The commis-
sioners are excited about the future and the
ability of the college to use the fairgrounds.
This is a benefit for everyone.”

at a distance of 500 feet ahead.
A vehicle towing an implement of
husbandry or an implement of hus-
bandry may be equipped with flash-
ing, rotating, or oscillating amber
lights. Amber is the only color permit-
day from 10 a.m. to noon in the basement
level of St. Mary’s Hall in Carson City. For

Meeting called to order and opened with the Pledge at 7 p.m. by Supervisor Phyl-
lis Larson. Members present: Supervisor Phyllis Larson, Clerk Colleen Stebbins,

TREASURER REPORT: Fire Department account $12,735.81, Municipal

Fire Department: Fire Chief Bill Knapp reported 4 grass fires in April and 1 house
fire May 1. Franky and Roger have passed the practical exam and waiting word
from State on written exam.
Amble Motorcycle Club is hosting a breakfast on May 24, 9 a.m. to 12 and pig roast
at 5 p.m. All donations for the fire department and public invited.
Zoning: Zoning Administrator Dave Kelsey reported 8 permits issued in April.
Dan Kanouse reported Planning Commission meeting May 24, 2010 at 7 p.m.,
election of officers and look over road contracts.
Cemetery: Jim Knapp reported concerns at the Amble Cemetery. Board discussed
the concerns and Cemetery footings will be on next month’s agenda.

charted portion of Amble Cemetery, roll call: Roy yes, Dan yes, Colleen yes, Phyl-

PUBLIC COMMENTS: Opened at 7:54 p.m. Jim Knapp asked about proposed
well tax. Phyllis replied it had died in committee. Public comment closed at 7:55
p.m.
NEW BUSINESS: Hall rent: Motion by Dan, second by Colleen to change fee
schedule for hall rent to $25.00 deposit plus $10.00 for hall rent per use. $25.00
deposit refunded if hall is clean, roll call: Dan yes, Colleen yes, Phyllis yes, Roy
yes, motion passed.
Dan will obtain estimates for new chairs for the hall.

record straight. In 2005, I made an error in judgment. Bob Hall called me and told
me that he had made a mistake at work and that he had to do community service.
I believed that he had told me all of the story. However, he did not tell me that he
had pleaded guilty to embezzlement. I REPEAT, HE DID NOT TELL ME HE
HAD PLEADED GUILTY TO EMBEZZLEMENT OR ANY OTHER CRIME. If
he had, he would not have continued working for our township. I would not have
recommended him to other townships. Our insurance company would not bond
someone who has pleaded guilty to embezzlement. I am sorry that I trusted him.”

Ordinance No. 2010-01
Section 10. Grounds Maintenance
The Township Board reserves the right to remove or trim any existing trees, plants or
shrubs located within a cemetery in the interest of maintaining proper appearance and the
use of the cemetery.
Mounds, bricks, blocks and any borders that hinder the free use of a lawn mower or other
gardening apparatus,are prohibited.
A designated Township Official or Cemetery Administrator shall have the right and au-
thority to remove and dispose of any and all growth, emblems, displays, containers and
other items that through decay, deterioration, damage or otherwise become or are un-
sightly.
No glass containers or items are allowed.
Section 15. Prohibited uses and Activities
The following prohibitions shall apply within the Township cemetery:
No person shall destroy, deface, apply graffiti to or otherwise injure any monument, sign,
tree or other lawful item located within a Township cemetery.
No person shall disturb the peace or unreasonably annoy, harass or disturb any other per-
son who is lawfully present on the grounds of any Township cemetery.
No vehicles shall be permitted to drive on lawns or cemetery plots in a cemetery.
There shall be no entry or presence in the cemetery by any person when the cemetery is
closed or outside of authorized times.
There shall be no destruction of cemetery property.
There shall be no destruction, defacing, cutting, etc. of any tree or plant within a cem-
etery.
There shall be no headstones, ornaments, vases, plastic flowers, fences, benches, trellises,
statues, signs or any other item placed, kept, installed or maintained in a cemetery except
those expressly allowed by this Ordinance.
There shall be no disturbing of the peace or engaging in any loud or boisterous conduct.
There shall be no digging, grading or mounding unless expressly authorized by this Or-
dinance.
There shall be no driving of an automobile, truck or any vehicle on any portion of a cem-
etery except the designated roads or drives.
There shall be no motorcycles, snowmobiles, four-wheelers, go-carts or similar vehicles.
There shall be no gathering of persons in excess of 75 people without prior Township ap-
proval (except during or incidental to a funeral occurring concurrent with burial).
There shall be no disinterment or grave openings unless approved by the Township
There shall be no possession or consumption of any alcoholic beverage.
There shall be no picnicking or consumption of feed without prior Township approval.
There shall be no music, playing of any radio, or the use of any amplification device or
similar item, except pursuant to a military ceremony or a funeral.
There shall be no solicitation or peddling of services or goods or any signs or placards
advertising any goods or services.
There shall be no littering or dumping.
There shall be no unlawful interference with or disruption of a lawful funeral or funeral
procession.
There shall be no private signs, lighting, moving displays or changeable copy on a sign.
There shall be no fires, candles or open flames.
No children under twelve (12) years of age shall be allowed in any Township cemetery
unless accompanied by an adult and are properly supervised by an adult.
There shall be no exceeding of posted speed limits.
There shall be no domestic animals of any kind or pets allowed within the cemetery
grounds. However, this prohibition shall not apply to dogs assisting handicapped per-
sons.
No firearms or archery arrows shall be discharged or shot except that military or other
veterans organizations may carry arms for the purpose of firing over the grave at the
burial of a member
No person shall engage in any fight, quarrel or disturbance.
Cremains or ashes of a deceased person shall not be scattered or dispersed

Assessment scores continue to rise at Tri county Area Schools. The

hard work is paying off for Tri County staff and students. During the fall
of 2009, the annual MEAP testing took place. Not only did Tri County
demonstrate stability and/or increases in proficiency levels at most grade
levels, but also demonstrated closing the achievement gap in our Students
with Disabilities and Economically Disadvantaged subgroups.
The following is a chart displaying the Fall 2008 and Fall 2009
proficiency levels in grades 3-9 in math, reading, science, and social
studies.

Tri County Area Schools undertook a huge endeavor during the 2009-
10 school year to address our curriculum alignment, instructional practices,
and assessment practices. All teachers were involved in “unpacking” the
current Michigan Content Expectations. They selected priority standards,
put them into “kid friendly” language, created curriculum maps, and
created common formative and summative assessments that all teachers
will give at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year. The assessments will
be analyzed together in grade levels and departments to determine what
types of interventions Tri County Area Schools needs to implement. Tri
County's goal is to ensure mastery of all Michigan Content Expectations
and National Core Expectations for all students. TC will continue to do
what is best for all students. Congratulations to everyone.

Members & Guests Present: Pat Bauman, Renae Brooks, Brenda Burgess, Arlene Butler, Linda
Godley, Pat Jacobus, Judy Parker, Vicky Paulen, Lavonne Rehfus, Betty Riemer, Toni Wagoner
and Janice Williams, Library Director.
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Vicky Paulen.
Approval of Minutes: Motion by Arlene B. to approve the April 14, 2010, minutes as read,
seconded by Pat J. All approved.
Treasurers Report: Treasurer Pat J. passed out an updated report. Brenda B. made a motion to
accept the Treasurers report as presented, seconded by Lavonne R. All approved.
Director’s Report: Janice W. reported the County Commissioners approved the ballot language
for the August primary.
She also reported plans are underway for the Kids Summer Reading Program at the Library. This
year’s theme is “Make A Splash Read!” There will be an Open House for sign-ups on June 8,
2010. This will also be an opportunity to browse the new books from The Libri Foundation and
the FOL and Audio Books from the Great Lakes Energy Foundation.
Janice had on display the podium that was recently purchased by the FOL to be used for Library
Programs.
She also reported that the opening kick-off for One Book One County (Montcalm) will take place
on May 18, 2010, from noon to 1 p.m. at both the Montcalm College M-Tec in Greenville and the
Beatrice E. Doser Building on the Montcalm Community College Campus.
Publicity Report: Arlene B. reported she has published information and will put up fliers for
the upcoming Gardenganza sale that will take place at the Library on Saturday, May 22, from 9
a.m. to 1 p.m.
Community Liaison: Renae B. reported she took photos of the recent Michigan Notable
Author’s program to be put on Facebook.
OLD BUSINESS
Free Magazines: Donations of current magazines are always welcome.
Business Expo: The Business Expo took place at Tri County High School on Friday, April 30,
2010. Renae B. and Lavonne R. were in charge of the FOL booth this year. They reported a good
turnout. Winners of the door prizes were Louise Lewis and Mary Zank.
Used Book Sale: The sale was well attended and brought in $653.90. Thanks to Chairman
Patricia S. and all who worked at the event.
Review FOL Brochure: Vicky P. reported she met with Karen Brady to go over ideas for a new
FOL brochure. Marjorie M. is also helping with this on-going project.
NEW BUSINESS
Updating Bank Information: Motion by Renae B. and seconded by Betty R. to remove
Rebecca Smith’s name from FOL checking account. All approved. Rebecca is no longer an FOL
member.
Gardenganza: Chairman Pat B. passed around a sign-up sheet for workers for this event which
will take place on May 22, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot just to the west
of the Library. Donations of surplus plants, seeds, bulbs, lawn ornaments, shovels, rakes and
other items used in the garden and lawn will be accepted. The Friends of the Library will sell the
donated items and use the money for Library programs or books.
2010 Quilts: Linda G. reported she has been working on one of the quilts for this year’s raffle at
the Harvest Festival in September. Quilt blocks are being turned in to complete a second quilt.
Janice W. will apply for the raffle license and tickets will be ordered as soon as the license is
approved.
On-Going Used Book Sale: A discussion was held on having a continuous used book sale. Linda
G. and Patricia S. will research the possibilities for this to take place.
OTHER BUSINESS
Landscaping Around Library: Vicky P. reported that Randy Heckman will replace the shrubs
around the Library that died over the winter.
Book Discussion Group: The book for June is “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert. The book
discussion will take place on Monday, June 7, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. in the Library Reading room.
Adjournment: Pat J. made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Brenda B.
