August 2016 Issue

IS IT ENOUGH?

Starting from 1st July 2016, both full-time and operationally ready national servicemen will be provided free basic insurance^1. This
new initiative will see eligible MINDEF and MHA personnel covered by this group insurance underwritten by Aviva with premiums paid for
by MINDEF and MHA.
Are you eligible? The Group Insurance comprising of 2 main components, Core and Voluntary scheme, will cover NSFs, NSmen, Regular
MINDEF/SAF servicemen, regular Home Team uniformed officers, as well as volunteers from the relevant MINDEF/SAF ministries.
The coverage will only cover eligible personnel during the period of their official duties.
How much do you need to pay? The Core Scheme of this group insurance is fully paid for by MINDEF and MHA respectively. Personnel
who wish to cover themselves for more than the $150,000 sum assured, will still have to bear the additional cost themselves.

What are the benefits? Lets take a look at some of the more interesting coverages provided under the Group Term Life (GTL) and Group
Personal Accidents (GPA) policies.
Daily Hospital Cash Benefit: $30 per day cash benefit shall be payable after the 10 th day of Hospital stay, up to a maximum of 30 days
continuously.
Ambulance Cost: reimburse the actual ground ambulance costs on a per event per Insured Person basis, up to a maximum of $500
for transportation (including the medical supplies used) to the Hospital.
Accidental Hospital Recuperation Benefit: one-time amount of $250 per hospitalization.
Mobility aid upon accidental total & permanent disablement, and
(Applicable only if you sustain bodily injury as a result of
Home Rehabilitation Renovation Expenses
an Accident and suffer total and permanent disability)
Though seemingly extensive, one should be mindful that the Core Schemes GPA DOES NOT reimburse you for medical expenses and
Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment expenses incurred for bodily injuries. So if I were to twist my ankle in an accident and work and
prefer to consult a Sinseh, I would still have to pay the cost myself.
More importantly, what if you choose not to stay in service for life, or what if you engage in high-risk activities such as
Canoeing
Mountaineering
Scuba-diving
Snow-skiing
Rock-climbing
To conclude, its still always safer to check with your personal financial consultant first, whether youve got your own accidental coverage!
