Instructor Inputs
The instructions for the faculty regarding the project are:

The project should be allocated to the students individually by the end of the first
cycle of the course.

Students can start the project only after the third experiment session is over.

Ask the students to read the project case study before the first session of the project,
so that they can clarify any doubts.

While allocating the project to the students, explain its scope by referring to the
topics, Project Activities and Project Timelines.

Ask the students to refer to the topic, Project Standards and Guidelines, before
starting the project documentation.

Evaluate the students according to the guidelines given in the Project Evaluation

Project 1.3

Case Study 1: Zipent, Inc.

Background
Zipent, Inc. is a leading telecom management company with its head office in Stockholm.
The company employs around 300 diligent and responsible staff members. It has various
departments such as the Accounts, Human Resources, Marketing, and Operations. To
provide 24x7 efficient telecom support services to its clients, the company has a
Windows-based network infrastructure with Active Directory Domain Services
(AD DS). In addition, the Windows network is used to enable the continuous resource
sharing and to provide centralized authentication to its employees and customers.
Recently, the management has planned to expand the business operations to cater to its
growing client base. For this, the management has set up new branch offices in different
cities so that the services can be provided to the clients in an efficient and productive
manner. However, the network infrastructure of the new offices is yet to be planned. The
setting up of these branch offices will serve crucial functionality for the clients and further
maximize the overall profits of the organization.
The management wants the infrastructure of the new branch offices to be set up in a
cost-effective and efficient manner. In addition, the management needs to have a
provision for the remote administration of the branch office computers. Further, the new
branch office infrastructure must be highly available, secure, and fault-tolerant.
Graeme is the server administrator at the head office. Graeme is assigned the
responsibility of planning and designing a secure, high-performance, and reliable network
infrastructure for the newly opened branch offices to meet the business needs of the
organization.

Existing System
The existing IT system of the office at Stockholm has Windows Server and its associated
network infrastructure. The company has central file servers, application servers, and print
servers that can be accessed only by the authorized users to support the organizational
requirements. The company has implemented AD for centrally managing the network
users, services, and resources. It has implemented appropriate enterprise policies in place
to adequately secure confidential information of the organization. These policies also
ensure that uniform settings can be applied to the users and computers across the domain,
as per the organizational requirements.
The Windows network of the company is configured as the zipent.com domain. The
company provides crucial network services and applications to its employees and

worldwide customers through this domain. In addition, the company provides

cost-effective telecom services to its esteemed customers through the Web. The network
of the company is divided into logical networks by using security protocols.

Envisioned System
The management of Zipent Inc. has asked Graeme to plan and design a sophisticated,
high-performance and reliable network infrastructure for the newly opened branch offices.
It is required that the network infrastructure comprising of resources, such as printers and
application servers be deployed at the new branch offices after careful planning. The
management wants that the clients of the branch offices are well connected to the head
office allowing sharing of important documents easily by effectively utilizing the Wide
Area Network (WAN) bandwidth. In addition, the management wants a functionality to
remotely administer and manage the servers located at the branch offices from the head
office. Also, the management wants to ensure that the computers and users of the branch
offices comply with the enterprise policies of the organization. Further, the management
wants to ensure that crucial data at the branch offices is regularly backed up to recover
from any disasters that may happen in future.
To be able to plan and design a sophisticated network infrastructure for the new branch
offices and meet all the organizational goals, Graeme has decided to:

Plan for the deployment of servers at the newly opened branch offices.

Plan for the remote administration of the server and client computers located at the
newly opened branch offices from the head office.

Plan for the unique addressing of the server and client computers at the newly opened
branch offices.

Plan for AD DS.

Plan for AD DS maintenance and availability.

Plan for the sharing of data in an optimized manner and ensure the security of local
and shared data.

Plan for application servers deployment.

Plan for the network security and the security policies.

Plan for network performance optimization and availability.

After adequate planning, Graeme needs to perform the following tasks:
1. Create the Windows Server 2008 R2 image.
2. Deploy the Windows Server 2008 R2 image.
3. Plan server administration.
4. Install and configure Remote Server Administration Tool (RSAT).
