CONSTRUCTION SEASON
Work continues
on DOT projects
With summer in Wisconsin comes major
road projects, and there are two notable
construction projects from the state
Department of Transportation (DOT) in the
Germantown and Richfield area this summer: The reconstruction of Hwy. 175 from
Beechwood Court to Polk Street in the village of Richfield and the installation of a
roundabout and Hwy. 145 and Donges Bay
Road in Germantown.
The Express News recently asked a DOT
spokesperson about the status of both
projects.
Hwy. 175 in Richfield: The reconstruction of the road includes the installation of
a roundabout at intersection of Hwys. 175
and 167, adding a shared use path from
Beechwood Industrial Court to Elm Street
and adding a sidewalk from Elm Street to
the WSOR railroad crossing. According to
information from the DOT, improvements
will include new concrete curb and gutter,
storm sewer, asphalt pavement, and new
signing and markings.
Under the first stage of construction,
traffic from the Hwy 167 intersection to
Polk Street closed in April and will remain

June home sales up 5.4%

The following information was provided by the Greater Milwaukee
Association of Realtors.
Home sales were up 5.4% in June,
marking 20 of the last 22 months of positive sale prices. 2,497 homes sold in
June compared to 2,370 in June 2015.
Comparing the numbers to 2014, sales
were up 29.8% (1,924 in 14).
The 2,497 unit sales in June was the
highest sales level this century. The previous high water mark for June was in
2006, when 2,347 units were sold.
Both Milwaukee County and the City
of Milwaukee are experiencing strong
market conditions. It is difficult to say
the surrounding counties have seen a
slowdown, because they would have had
higher sales if the pool of inventory was
bigger. The lack of listings under approximately $350,000 has prevented buyers
from acquiring a home.
For the second quarter, the market
saw 9,961 total sales, compared to 9,254
in 2015, a 7.6% increase.

Howdy - my name is Alexzander but if that sounds too formal you can call
me Alex or just Al. I came to WCHS from up north, the Oneida County
Humane Society. I was originally surrendered to that shelter because I was
barking too much in the apartment I lived in and that was bugging the
neighbors. So that means no apartments or condos for me because I have a lot to say and can
make a lot of racket. I am a designer dog or hybrid called a "Rat-Cha" - cha, cha, cha! I love to
play with other dogs and enjoy small, medium or large dogs; although I can be a little pushy. I am
good with cats and mostly ignore them but am respectful of their correction if I do cross a line.
Any children in my new home should be 8 years or older and dog savvy because I am a little shy
initially and I am quite small - only about 10 pounds. Because I am just a little guy sometimes I
feel I need to demand things like attention or to be carried about like King Tut. But I know that is
not the best thing for me - I need a calm assertive owner who will take me for a calm walk every
day and make sure I am settled before I eat or get treats and will help me learn proper behavior.
I am excellent with all sorts of handling and will take advantage of the opportunity to be scratched,

Tip of the Week: Keep it cool indoors. Turn on the AC in your home, especially if you'll be out of the house for
several hours. If it's too warm for you, it's too warm for your pet.

Not Quite at Pre-Recession Values

The Metropolitan Milwaukee market
is in the midst of its fifth year of a postrecession real estate market. While market forces are strong and generally prices
are on the rise, the market has not
recovered completely. All four counties
are still below their peak 2nd quarter
average sale prices set in 2006-2007 by
an average of 4.6%.
Hottest Markets
The most active markets in the
region, characterized by those communities with more than 50 unit sales, that
had an increase in units sold and average
sale price, and a decrease in days-onmarket (DOM):

Average Sale Price

The tight inventory levels are pushing prices up in all areas. All four metropolitan counties saw price increases in
the 2nd quarter. Milwaukee County had
the most communities with price
increases with 15 of 19 communities in
positive territory.
While increasing prices are a welcomed situation, sellers should not automatically assume they can command
their sale price or that their property
will sell "as is" as was often the case in
the pre-recession market. Properties
must be in good condition, priced correctly for their neighborhood and marketed accurately to capture top dollar.

Where to go
Buyers should seek the counsel of a
REALTOR in determining their best
housing options, and sellers need a

145 remains open.
Under the second stage of the project, southbound traffic on Hwy. 45 will
be detoured to I-41 for two months
while northbound traffic will be open.
DeNeve indicated the detour of southbound traffic is targeted to occur in
late July, but added that the schedule
could change and go later.
The entire intersection is projected
to be open by fall. Michels Corporation
is the contractor for the project.
Besides those two projects, the DOT
was scheduled to perform milling and
paving work at the I-41/US 45 split.
The closure of US 45 was scheduled
from 8 p.m. July 15 to 8 a.m. July 16.
That work is part of the I-41/US 45
rehabilitation project occurring from
the split to the Waukesha/Washington
County line, which also includes
installing new asphalt and upgrading
the cable guard system.

Sheriff's Department investigating

wire transfer fraud
Washington County was the target
of a wire fraud that resulted in just
under $90,000 being transferred to
criminal bank accounts.
The county disclosed the fraud in a
statement issued July 16. According to
the statement, criminals mimicked an
email address and claimed to be the Iphone of County Administrator Joshua
Schoemann. From that account, messages were sent to Washington County
Treasurer Jane Merton for wire requests.
Wire transfers were then made to "state
consultants" in amounts of $58,560 and
$39,300.
The next week Merten replied to a
mimicked message and copied county
finance staff on the email.
"Upon receiving the copied e-mail
thread Finance staff recognized various
red flags in the message and completed

proper due diligence identifying that

the County had been scammed. The
Sheriffs Department was then promptly contacted, and the criminal investigation began," Washington County officials said in a statement. "Efforts are
underway in cooperation with the
Countys banking institution to recover
any possible funds. Additionally, the
County plans to file the appropriate
insurance and bond claims following
the completion of the criminal investigation. County Administrator Joshua
Schoemann has initiated a review of all
processes and procedures by the
Finance Director to prevent future
errors of this kind."
The county added that no further
comment will be made until the
Sheriff's Department completes its
investigation

Protect your joints and prevent pain

Joints play vital roles in the human
body, forming the connections
between bones and facilitating movement. Damage to the joints can be
especially painful, and that damage
may result from conditions such as
osteoarthritis or gout.
While not all joint pain is debilitating, the discomfort of joint pain is
such that it's wise for adults to take
steps to protect their joints with the
hope of preventing joint pain down the
road. Recognizing that joint pain can
negatively affect quality of life, the
Arthritis Foundation offers the following joint protection tips to men and
women.
Forgo fashion with regard to
footwear. When women choose their
footwear, fashion should not be their

top priority. According to the Arthritis

Foundation, three-inch heels stress the
feet seven times more than one-inch
heels and heels put additional stress
on knees, possibly increasing women's
risk for osteoarthritis. Though heels
may be fashionable, the risk of developing joint pain is not worth making
the fashion statement.
Get some green in your diet. A
healthy diet pays numerous dividends,
but many may not know that a healthy
diet can help prevent joint pain. Green
vegetables such as spinach, broccoli,
kale and parsley are high in calcium
and can reduce age-related bone loss
while also slowing cartilage destruction.
Shed those extra pounds. If you
start including more healthy vegeta-

bles in your diet, you might just start

to lose a little weight as well. Such
weight loss also can help your joints,
as the AF notes that every extra pound
a person gains puts four times the
stress on his or her knees. The AF also
notes that research has shown that
losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce
a person's risk of osteoarthritis of the
knee by 50 percent.
Hit the pool. Swimming is a great
full-body workout and can be especially helpful to the joints. The buoyancy
of water supports the body's weight,
reducing stress on the joints and minimizing pain as a result. If possible,
swimmers already experiencing pain
should swim in heated pools, which
can help relieve pain. While you can
still benefit from swimming in pools

with colder temperatures, cold water

may not soothe the joints like warm
water can.
Take breaks at work. Many people
develop joint pain thanks to their jobs.
If you spend all day sitting at a desk
or standing on your feet, try to find a
greater balance between the two.
Joints can grow stiff from sitting all
day, while standing throughout your
work day can stress the joints. Take a
short break every 30 minutes to stand
up and walk around if you spend most
of your day at a desk. If you stand a
lot at your job, stop to sit down for a
few minutes once every half hour.
Joint pain and aging do not have to
go hand in hand. More information
about joint paint is available at
www.arthritis.org.

A dream becomes a business

Coffeeville opens in Jackson
A dream and the building for it have come together at Coffeeville in Jackson.
"High quality product and a wonderful atmosphere
-- that's what Coffeeville is all about," business owner
Jack Kulwikowsk said during a recent interview
The business is located at N168 W20101 Main
Street in the village of Jackson at the site of a log
cabin. Kulwikowski has learned about the history of
coffee and has collected several coffee-related
antiques, several of which are on display through the
restaurant, including 140 coffee grinders.
"I've been collecting coffee since I was a young
kid. I love coffee, coffee was always my passion. This
is truly a passion, now my passion is combined with
business," Kulwikowski said.
He added that "roasting coffee is what I do, it's my
thing."
The building was constructed in 1864 and was constructed by Valentine Koenig.
"I love logs. I've always lived in a log home," he
said. He further explained that "there is no better way

to enjoy coffee than in something that is

rustic and antique."
Kulwikowski first saw the building in
2014 and knew it was a log home, though
the logs were not exposed. It took 21
months of reconstruction and resurfacing, which included removing wallpaper
and plaster.
Kulwikowski said he was looking for a
log cabin building upon which to locate
Coffeeville.
"I knew what I wanted, I was just
looking for the right spot and the right
building," he said. He said the dream of
Coffeville was born in 2013.

Kettle Moraine Symphony announces 2016-2017 concert season

The Kettle Moraine Symphony (KMS)
welcomes a new season and a new music
director this fall when Lindsay Riemer
conducts the orchestra for its first concert of the 2016-2017 season. The season opener October 2 showcases the
music of the Romantic Era, featuring
Dvorks Symphony No. 8, composed in
1889. The season has something for
every taste, as Riemer leads the orchestra and audiences through great music
from the Classical, Romantic, Baroque,
and 20th Century eras, with "Joy" an
overarching theme.
"Music brings us joy in so many
ways, thats why I chose Joy as the
theme for my first season as music
director of the KMS," said Riemer, who

was selected this spring to succeed

retiring music director Paul Thorgaard.
Concert dates and times are:
Romantic Era Sunday, Oct. 2,
2016, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church,
1044 S. Silverbrook Drive, West Bend.
Concert begins at 2 p.m. with a PreConcert Talk at 1 p.m. by Peter Gibeau,
University of Wisconsin-Washington
County music professor and KMS principal bass. Dvorks Symphony No. 8
reflects the Romantic Era, when music
became more expressive and emotional.
Its opening flute solo mimics birdsong,
one of its many images of nature. The
program also includes Beethovens
Leonore No. 3 and Mendelssohns "Calm
Sea and Prosperous Voyage."

Dear Dr. Winter, I am looking to correct my

smile. I have fairly straight teeth, but am
interested in gum contouring. Is this something
your practice can do? What would be involved?
What is the cost? Are consultations free? Thank
you.
Dear S. yes we do recontouring for my esthetic
smile displays! In fact we now have the newest,
most researched laser on the market called
Lightscalpel! It is a C02 laser that has superpulsed technology which provides the most
comfortable, fastest healing of soft tissue
available today.
Some dental practices have diode lasers, which
heat a fiber-optic cable to between 500 and 900
degrees Celsius. This burns the tissue and causes
a deep zone of necrosis or cell death, which can
cause more pain and prolonged healing. A C02
laser interacts with cells in the 10,600nm
wavelength, which will cause the water within
the cell to heat and vaporize which limits thermal
damage to deeper tissues.
The C02 laser is the best device for biopsies,
removal of tissue tags, crown lengthening
procedures, exposure of crown margins,
frenectemies, soft tissue recontouring and has the
most studies done by Universities to follow its
effectiveness and healing. The laser can also be
used to treat failing implants (peri-implantitis),
help heal cold sores and is known as the most
precise cutting device used in dentistry as we can
change the wavelength, penetration and depth of
cut precisely. Implant uncovery can be done with
this laser as the laser energy is not absorbed into
the titanium implant and only treats the smear
layer of bacteria that may be causing an implant
to lose bone.
We do offer free consultations and second
opinions and are happy to discuss using the laser
to even out gum displays, correct gummy smiles,
make front teeth look more symmetric and
remove denture sores that will not go away on
their own.

A Bit of Baroque Saturday, Nov.

19, 2016, at Our Saviors Lutheran
Church, 1044 S. Silverbrook Drive, West
Bend. Concert begins at 2 p.m. with a
Pre-Concert Talk at 1 p.m. J.S. Bachs
timeless "Sheep May Safely Graze" aria,
composed in 1713, adds a bit of Baroque
to this program of thanksgiving and
winter holiday anticipation. Bizets
Farandole is from a French Baroque
dance, and Franz Schuberts Symphony
No. 3, is a spirited work from a composer with claims to both the Romantic and
Classical eras. Rimsky-Korsakovs wintery Christmas Eve Suite, Schuberts Ave
Maria, Moens Give Thanks, Andersons
merry Sleigh Ride, and carols complete
the program.
20th Century Sunday, March 5,
2017, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church,
1044 S. Silverbrook Drive, West Bend.
Concert begins at 2 p.m. with a PreConcert Talk at 1 p.m. Grofes "Grand
Canyon Suite" evokes grand scenes,
from an opening sunrise to the Painted
Desert, the bray of a burro on the trail,
cloudburst, and sunset. Copland wrote
"Fanfare for the Common Man" in
response to the U.S. entry into World
War II, inspired in part by a famous
1942 speech proclaiming the dawn of
the "Century of the Common Man."
Coplands "Quiet City" and Brittens
"Simple Symphony" add to the contemporary vibe. This Concerto Concert also
features the student winner of the
Washington
County
Concerto
Competition.
