When the two particles are put in contact, they share the
difference of charge identically. Hence the two particles
repel, with a force less than F.

(a) Self induction: When a changing current flows
through a coil, the magnetic flux linked with the coil
changes and an opposing emf is induced in the coil. This
emf is called self-induced emd or back emf and the
phenomenon is known as self-induction. Its SI unit is
henry.

The lines of force have the pattern as shown. They are
crowded together near the +4Q charge. At the netural
point N, the electric fields of the two charges should be
equal and opposite, so,

Important properties of equipotential surfaces:
(i) No work is done in moving a test charge over an
equipotential surface.
(ii) Electric field is always normal to the equipotential
surface at every point.
(iii) Equipotential surfaces are close together in the
16.
regions of strong field and farther apart in the regions of

weak field.
(iv) No two equipotential surfaces can intersect each
other.

Lenzs law states that the direction of induced current is such

that it opposes the cause which produces it.
As the loop moves into the magnetic field, the flux lined with
the loop PQRS increases. According to Lenzs law, the induced
current in the loop PQES flows in such a direction so as to
opposite this increase in flux. So induced current must flow
anticlockwise i.e., along the path SRQP.
Here N = 20, A = 0.09 m2, B = 0.5T, f = 150/ Hz.

(a) The alternating current through coil P sets up an
alternating magnetic flux around it. This varying flux
passes through coil Q and sets up an induced current
which lights up the bulb B.
(b) As the coil Q is moved towards left, the rate of change
of flux linked with coil Q decreases. The induced current
decreases and the bulb B gets dimmer.

Clearly, for a high frequency a.c., XC is small and XL is
large. That is way a high frequency a.c. can pass through
a pure capacitor easily but not through a pure inductor.
