SYLLABUS Summer 2016

Introduction to Finite Element Methods (MEEM 4405)
Section R01, Days and times (Lectures): TWR 9.35-10.45 am, Room: ME-EM 406

Instructor/Office: Dr. Aneet Narendranath, ME-EM Rm 823

Office Hours: Wed 12.00-2.30pm or by appointment

Office Hours: Please contact the GTA
Required Textbooks:
A First Course in the Finite Element Method, Daryl L. Logan, [any edition may be used]
Finite Element Simulations with ANSYS Workbench 16 by Huei-Huang Lee
MATLAB guide to finite elements an interactive approach by Peter I. Kattan (e-book Available free via MTU Library: http://ils.lib.mtu.edu/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=713404)
Prerequisites (besides what Banweb suggests):
Linear Ordinary Differential Equations, basic linear algebra, mechanics of materials, statics, basic conduction heat
transfer, basic fluid mechanics knowledge.
Software used:
Ansys Workbench, MATLAB (pdetool), Mathematica 10.0
Course objective:
This course will introduce the finite element method and analysis and its applications to structural and transport
problems. A classical approach is strongly preferred by the instructor, for lectures.
A Few Expectations of Students:
Have an open mind about finite element methods as they are not only used for structural analysis. Please also
remember that FEM is not equivalent to only using software.
Variational calculus is a natural prerequisite for FEM. The students will be exposed to the ideas of varational
calculus and how FEM emerged from within. This exposure will only be of an introductory nature. Hopefully
this will allow students to puruse advanced topics on variational calculus, in other courses, if they are interested.
There are some reading assignments that the student must complete. These are either marked as (DIY) in the
syllabus or will be made available via the Canvas course page. This reading may range from textbook chapters,
news reports to pivotal journal or conference publications related to finite element methods and its genesis.
These reading assignments are designed to enhance the students appreciation of the field.
Very often, if not all the time, the student will need to make appropriate connections between material covered
in lectures to that covered during laboratory (lab) sessions.

Exams may have take-home and simulation components. Missed examinations/extra time for examinations will be
allowed only with an excuse from the Dean of Students/authorized university officials.
Attendance/Participation/Class decorum:
Attend all lectures and exams. Participation in class room discussions, pertinent to the course, is expected. A
professional demeanor and positive attitude is desired in class. Asking the instructor the age old question of is this
going to be on the test? or the like is discouraged. Cell phones, tablets, laptop computers may not be used in
class. If you are expecting a call for an interview, please let the instructor know so as to grant special permission.
Unauthorized use of cell phones in class will result in a penalty of 5% per-infraction on your overall
grade and this will be levied with zero tolerance.
Homework and Homework Formatting Rules:
There will be NO homework collected for the lectures. However, regular (homework) assignments will be assigned
during laboratory sessions. Laboratory assignments will be collected and graded by the GTA. Please check with the
course GTA for lab report expectations and rules.
Academic Honesty:
Policies of academic honesty are outlined at:
http://www.studentaffairs.mtu.edu/dean/judicial/policies/academic_integrity.html
Failing to maintain honesty will result in an immediate, zero-tolerance F grade and an indelible mark on your record.
