EUT440 ENGINEER IN SOCIETY GROUP ASSIGNMENT (Sample)

1. As a young engineer, you are instructed by your employee to prepare a bankable report for a prospective project
based on the information by your employer. You have no access to ascertain the reliability of the information
provided. In light of the IEM Regulations on Professional Conduct, how do you advise your employer so that you
may complete your assignment with integrity?
Students must leverage on:

the students may discuss the work of an engineer, training of an engineer, engineer's role in national
development, other related information, leverage the importance of using information that are reliable and
unbiased during the course of engineers' task such as in design and construction works, implication to the
reliability of the design if data is questionable, look from the viewpoint of safety & health, legality (law), reliability,
costs, etc. Support with statistics on costs, fatalities, accidents, damages of not using reliable data.
Why engineer need to have integrity, what is integrity, related policy on the issue(s) (there is a national policy on
integrity in Malaysia).
How such a situation, if allowed, affects the engineering profession, image, trust and respect, relate to any
examples.

highlighted in the topics (in this case could be integrity, and conflict of interest, etc).
In the above topics the relevant codes of the IEM Reg & Prof Conducts related to the issue (eg):
Prof Conduct 1. A member shall at all times take care to ensure that his work and the products of his work
constitute no avoidable danger of death or injury or ill health to any person.
Prof Conduct 2. A member shall take all reasonable steps to avoid waste of natural resources, damage of the
environment, and wasteful damage or destruction of the products of human skill and industry.
Prof Conduct 3. A member called upon to give an opinion in his professional capacity shall, to the best of
his ability, give an opinion that is objective and reliable.
Argue these code accordingly in the context of the above issue of integrity of data, why it is important to
comply to the codes. Legal implication from the context of Malaysian Laws such the Engineers' Registration
Act, OSH Act, Environmental Act etc.
