Important Information for Students

The criteria each task relates to are shown against that task where possible.

Please note that plagiarism is treated as a serious offence and therefore the work you
produce must be individual and original although may work in groups in some instances
(Please refer to Student Handbook on Plagiarism & Cheating).

All sources of information must be referenced using Harvard referencing where a

reference list/Bibliography should be included at the end of the assignment.

Please note that the submission date given for this assignment is the final date that you can
hand over the assignment. A one week grace period maybe extended with prior approval
from the Program Manager Undergraduate. However, note that submissions handed
in one week late will be graded lower (Please refer to the Student Handbook on
Assessments - Late Submissions & Penalties).

Assignments returned to students for re-working must be re-submitted within 10 days

(Please refer to Student Handbook on Assignments Re-submission).

Failure to re-submit the previously marked assignment with the re-submitted assignment
will mean that results cannot be released for the respective unit.

Please read, follow and reference both the contents of the unit outline and the grading
criteria of the assignment before completing this assignment.

Section A
Scenario I
Wembley Stadium is a football stadium in Wembley, London, England, which opened in 2007, on
the site of the original Wembley Stadium, which was demolished from 20022003. The stadium
hosts major football matches including the FA Cup Final and home matches of the England national
football team. It was designed by HOK Sport and Foster and Partners, it includes a partially
retractable roof and the 134-metre-high (440 ft) Wembley Arch. The stadium was built by
Australian firm Multiplex at a cost of 798 million. This special design of the roof structure has
made the stadium a perfect place with almost no disturbance to view. (Wembley_Stadium, 2016).

Figure 1: The Wembley Arch

Task 1 (P1.1) (D3)

Following structure is a 2- dimensional arch which can be used in a similar application as
above. The joints all lie on radial lines subtending angles of 15 as indicated, and the curved
members act as two-force members. Distance DC = OA = DB = R.
1.1 How do you analyze the curved members
1.2 Determine the reactions at the points A and B
1.3 Determine the force in member DG and FC of the compound truss.

Task 2 (P1.2)
Complex pulley systems were heavily used in fixing the Wembley Arch at the correct
position. They were easily handled with a systematic equilibrium analysis.

Figure 3: A Pulley Syatem

A 450-lb crate is to be supported by the rope-and-pulley arrangement shown in figure 3.

2.1 Determine the magnitude and direction of the force F that should be exerted on the
free end of the rope.
2.2 Determine the reactions acting on each pulley and their respective directions.

Task 3 (P1.3)
The some of the special stress members in the structure have cross sectional shapes as
shown in the figure below. Determine, by direct integration, the coordinate of the
centroidof the area shown. The Cartesian equation for the curvature is given in the figure 5
itself.

Figure 5: Ctoss Section of a Stress Member

Task 4 (P1.4)
Some brackets of the structure have the following cross sectional shape. For the plane area
shown, determine;
4.1
4.2
4.3

The first moments with respect to the x and y axes,

The location of the centroid.
Validate the final result using a computer software. (i.e. a CAD software such as
AutoCAD, SolidWorks etc.)

Task 5 (P1.5)
The section shown is formed by lacing together two C200 27:9 channel sections. They are
used in the same structure mentioned in this scenario. Determine the distance for which
the moments of inertia of the section about theandaxes are equal. Neglect the moment of
inertia of the lattice bars that are indicated by the dashed lines.

Figure 7: C200 27:9 channel sections

Section B
Task 6 (P2.1)
A 10 kg package drops from a chute into a 24 kg cart with a velocity of 3 m/s. Knowing that
the cart is initially at rest and can roll freely, determine
6.1 The final velocity of the cart,
6.2 The impulse exerted by the cart on the package, and
6.3 The fraction of the initial energy lost in the impact.

Figure 8: Package Falling on to Cart

Task 7 (P2.2)
Pen P of the flatbed plotter traces the curve y = x3/2, where x and y are measured in mm.
When x = 1000 mm, the speed of slider A is 200 mm/s. For this position, calculate
7.1 The speed of P; and
7.2 The normal component of theacceleration of P.

Task 8 (P2.3) (M1)

The rigid body is rotating about the y-axis. In the position shown in Fig. (a), the angular
velocity and angular acceleration of the body are as specified in the figure. All the other
required details are given in the figure itself. Determine the velocity and acceleration
vectors of point A in this position using;
8.1
8.2

Vector equations; and

Scalar equations.
