PART B (4 points)
Given the explanation on the construction of composite Index, give
me two example of composite indices on human development being
used to compare the status of the different countries around the
globe. Discuss briefly what indicators make up the indices.
Indices that can be used in comparing the status of different nations can be
the level of education in each country and their corresponding economic
status.
Based on the Human Development Index made by the United Nation
Development Programme (UNDP) (2013), the indicators that they used for
the level education is the mean of years of schooling for adults aged 25 years
and expected years of schooling for children of school entering age. But based
on my own interpretation, it is best that it would be measured also on the type
of educational program that each country is practicing like the k-12 program in
the Philippines and the like; that alone is yet the proper measure, it should also
be taken into account the average of the population who are able to finish the
entire educational program per country.
In economics the way of knowing the economic status of a nation is through
their Gross National Income (GNI) per capita based on purchasing power parity.
This data are provided by international monitoring bodies for economic welfare
like World Bank. According to World Bank, GNI per capita PPP is the GNI
converted to international dollars using purchasing power parity rates. Aside
from such, it was also derived that GNI is considered as the sum of value added
by all resident producers plus any taxes not included in the valuation of output
plus net receipts of primary income from abroad.
