Homework 1
1. Find out how much energy per capita per sector Ecuador uses
2. Compare this with at least 3 industrialized countries and 3 developing countries
3. Analyze the differences in amount and sectorial distribution.
The following table shows the energy consumption per capita per sector in Ecuador, in 3
industrialized countries and in 3 developing countries:

Figure 14. Energy consumption per capita in Non energy use Sector (bep/hab)

Developed countries had proved that they produce much energy to cover their necessities, so a
higher consumption is a consequence of it. Other history goes for countries working on their
development like Bolivia, Indonesia and Brazil whose consumption is less. In the graphs showed
below, they show the relation between the indicator of human development (IDH) and the
consumption of energy considering the population in the countries. Also the factor for the
numbers showed is because some countries havent reached standards of technology.

4. Why is transport the biggest energy consumption sector in Ecuador?

Transport is the biggest energy consumption sector because of:

The number of vehicles enrolled in Ecuador by 2013 is around 1.7 million. This means that
one of 9 persons owns a vehicle. The 32% of consumption corresponds to light weight,
followed by 37% of heavy weight. This indicates de importance of transport in the
country[2].
Lack of technology that allows reducing the consumption of petroleum products. The 87%
of the energy needed by the transport sector correspond to gasoline and diesel.
The subsidy of petroleum products by the government, leads to a bigger consumption
than if higher prices were paid.
High consumption of fuels to transport loads nationwide, due to the use of an inefficient
method of transport (trucks instead of railways for example).
