Mildcarbonsteelbuttweldedtanksarecommonlyusedattemperaturesbelow120F(49C)whereanincreasedlevel
ofironimpurityisnotaproblem.Weldingshouldbedonewithappropriaterodssuchasthosecontaining1/2%
molybdenum.Annealingtopreventstresscorrosioncrackingisnotrequiredfor50%causticsodasolutionstoragetanks

stainlesssteelshavebeensuccessfullyused,however,highercorrosionratesandtheriskofchlorinestresscrack
corrosionmakethesemetalslessdesirable.
Fiberglassreinforcedplastic(FRP)forcausticsodasolutionstorageequipmentshouldbeusedaftercareful
considerationofprocessconditionsandconsultationwiththeresinsupplier.Withoutproperprotection,causticsoda
solutioncanreadilyattacktheglassfibersandweakenthestructuralintegrityofequipmentresultinginequipment
failure.
FRPhassuccessfullybeenusedforhighlyironsensitiveprocesseswhenusedwithasyntheticsurfaceveilandan
appropriatecorrosionbarrier.Someofthevinylesterandepoxyresinshavegoodresistanceforcausticsodaservice
withincertaintemperatureandconcentrationlimits.Theresinselectionshouldbecarefullyreviewed,especiallyifthe
processcausticconcentrationisgreaterthan20%.
Aluminum,magnesium,zinc,tin,chromium,bronze,brass,copper,andtantalumareincompatiblewithcausticsoda
solutionandshouldnotbeused.
Galvanized(zinccoated)materialsshouldnotbeusedincausticstorageandprocessareas.Forironsensitive
processes,theapplicationofaprotectivecoating(epoxyresin,thermoplastic),bondedalloy(nickel,nickelalloy),oran
