Causes of poor study habits of junior senior high school students of Santa Rosa
Educational Institution S.Y.2015- 2016 as perceived by their parents
Introduction
The focus of the researcher is to investigate about the most common factors that affect the study
habits of the students and the reason behind the said factor. The researchers divided the
respondents` child base on their gender resulting to the differentiation between male and female
and depending to each category. Their parents rate their children (junior senior high school
students of Santa Rosa Educational Institution) base on how they behave. The researchers will
present graphs to help the people on the society to understand the topic easily and also they will
give some recommendation and suggestions on how to fix and solve these habits once the
gathered information is analyzed and distributed to the society. The Researchers observed that
the student tend to do multi-tasking while studying, like checking your Facebook and twitter
accounts then returning to your notes. Studying with your friends, procrastination, studying late
at night, The students also think that they need to feel comfortable first before they can study
their lesson; they play on their computer instead of reading their notes, put all these together
resulting to poor study habits.

Background of the studies

Every high school students have study habits including the lower years. Some are good and some
are the other way around including the junior senior High School of the Santa Rosa Educational
Institution, which led the researchers to investigate about the said topic. This research is provided
because of its importance and benefits.it has a large amount of beneficiaries, not only on the
researchers` school but all of the school in the world. This is also important because almost 80%
of the junior senior high school student of Santa Rosa Educational Institution has habits that
hinder them from studying their lessons effectively. This topic also needs attention simply
because the student of this generation is the one who will build the future in addition of all of the
students has study habits no matter what are the circumstances. Once the gathered information is
analyzed and distributed on the society the projected outcome of this research will be 7 out of 10
students can solve the said habits.

Theoretical Framework
This study is anchored on the self-determination theory by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan
because the learner Himself and the independent variables have a great role in shaping the
learners study Habit. Self- determination is innate to an individual and together with the
psychological Needs. This theory emphasizes on the individuals motivation on studying and
each factors that affects the individual performance of the students. The term motivation as stated
in the study of RugeshRaghuwanshi (2008) is the result of processes, internal or external to the
individual, which will arouse enthusiasm and persistence to pursue a certain course of action.
Motivation is important in an individual to do once task and if one is not motivated it is
impossible to come up a good result. This motivation could be possible if there is a positive
stimulus that would bring out the positive behavior in the life of the learners. In such this paper
put into consideration the social environment that nurtures the learners inherent potentials.
This theory talks about motivation. Positive motivation is important in students to do their tasks
especially in their study. When the student is not motivated it is impossible to do their tasks good
as they want.

Significance of the study
Students
This research will help the student to think why their grades are low or fail, and this research will
help them, because they will see the negative effects of this research. It will also help them to

prevent failures in class, because the students already know the negative effects so that they will
think to change their attitude into better.

Teachers
This research will help the teachers to guide their students to avoid their bad study habits,
because teachers are the second parents of the students so that every teachers need to help each
other to cheer their students to study harder to avoid failure.

Parents
This research will aware parents to motivate his or her children to stop any kind of destruction to
his or her studies like playing computer games, hanging out with their friends and using any kind
of gadgets while studying therefore the parents help their child to focus on their study.

Researchers
This research also helps us researcher about poor study habits, and the other students who did not
know what is the negative effects of poor study habits. And they will know what really happens
if they have poor study habits and researchers can help the teacher, parents and the other students
who involve in this situation.

9
Definition of Terms
Motivation the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something.
Endeavor to seriously or continually try to do (something).

Failure a state of inability to perform a normal function.

Poor not good in quality or condition in some manner.
Study something that a person studies or gives attention to.
Habit a usual way of behaving.

10
Chapter 2

Based on the findings of (Abderisak, 2007), students cannot study without considering the time
needed on their work they should have a schedule and use it as a guide for them to locate if they

have available time among extracurricular activities and social life. Time should be properly
observed accordingly to the given span.
According to Salandanan (2008), the students should know how to learn on their own. A student
needs to acquire the skills of how to learn not only on the school but to learn for a lifetime. The
ability to make a more effective way on his/her thinking process.
(Manila Bulletin) found that for you to have a more effective and efficient way on study habits
you have to focus on that subject matter you also have to maximize your time for you to be able
to have enough time to study. Managing your time helps you on achieving your goal.
Lee-Chua (2011), according to him bullying and drug abuse is not the common problem of the
student it is procrastination the avoidance of doing a task which needs to be accomplished.
The teachers should motivate the students on their studies even the slow learners should be
treating equally and give them proper attention so that they wouldnt feel left behind. Parents
should keep their children away from the television and let them study and finish their
homework.
De Escobar (2009) stated those college students, high school students or even elementary
students still needs to study in order to perform better and succeed in school. Good study habits
starts from error. The students should take notes on what the teacher says this will help them
study on the next exam.
According to Chambers (2009), student days are one of the busiest moments in our lives.
Students need to recite, make projects, assignments and exams which make them exhausted. If

the student doesnt know how to manage his/her time she will have a hard time on focusing on
his/her studies, he/she will get stressed out.
According to the research project of Frank Rogue (2000), the true reason why students fail is
because they do not know how to study. He said that a student should make sure that he/she has a
good desk sturdy chair, good light, comfortable room temperature and quiet atmosphere. It
means that he/she should eliminate all the distractions that can destroy his/her studies.

11
Synthesis
Each literature and studies comes from thesis, dissertation and journals that are related to the said
study.

According to (Abderisak) 2007, scheduling is extremely important when it comes to managing

the use of time. It is important to manage time wisely. When time is managed and organized
wisely; it can make the difference between a productive day and a very hectic day.
(Manila Bulletin) stated that you need to develop your skills to effectively manage your time to
bring forth improvements to your life on a dramatic scale. You must be accepting to making
fundamental changes. You have to learn to prioritize and take things one step at a time.
Developing time management skills will also help you get to know yourself a little better. This is
the first step in proper time management.
The present study shows us the common problem of students to their study skills.

Educational Institution S.Y. 2015-2016) were chosen because they were the one who is the most
concern about the well-being of individual Students

18
Statistical Treatment of Data
The following formula to compute the gathered data was used by researchers.
1. Weighted Mean was used to calculate the overall response of the respondents each question.
This is the formula that the researchers used:
WM =

fx
n

Where :
WM = weighted mean

F = frequency
N = total of respondents
2. General Mean used to compute the overall weighted mean by sum all the weighted mean and
divided to the number of the weighted mean in a category. The formula used in getting the
general mean is:

GM =

weighted mean
number of weighted mean

Where:
GM = General Mean
= sum of all

3. Percentage Distribution descriptive statistics used to determine the number of the respondents
responding each category against the overall number of the respondents.
