OPERATING THE RADIO

For operating instructions, please refer to the User Manual as supplied with each radio. A
description of the controls and indicators is given in that document.

4.

THEORY OF OPERATION
The transceiver is constructed on two main printed circuit boards; one containing the
Microprocessor and Audio circuits, and the other containing the Synthesiser, Transmitter and
Receiver circuits.
In order to describe the circuit operation of the radio, the description has been broken down to the
principal functional sections. They are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

The Microprocessor.
The Audio and Signalling circuits.
The Synthesizer.
The Receiver.
The Transmitter.

These are described, in turn, in the following sections.

4.1. THE MICROPROCESSOR

The heart of the radio is the uPD78F0547 microprocessor (IC5), which is a flexible, powerful,
low consumption device.
IC5 (uPD78F microprocessor) and IC4 (a 1Mbit-SPI-Bus Serial EEPROM) work together
holding all the information that is needed to program any of HT700 series models.
Shared between the internal memory in IC5 and the external serial EEPROM is all the data
needed to make the radio function, including dealer programmed data.
IC5 and IC4 communicate via a 2 wire serial bus.
IC5 IC4 R207 R210
According to the model, the Firmware provides instructions concerning the use of display (or
not), keypad (or not), number of channels, Selective Calling, etc.
According the dealers programming, the memories contain data such as:
Channel information including frequency, Squelch type, sub-tones, TX power level, frequency
spacing, the function of the programmable buttons, alignment data such as power levels,
sensitivity, centre frequency, deviation limits, etc.
In the models with a display (HT73x, HT75x and HT76x), the microprocessor (IC5) drives the
segments of the display via the connector CON4.
In the models with keypads, IC5 also reads the tactile keypad matrix formed by switches SW1 to
SW25 as described below.

The microprocessor outputs Beeps and warning tones on pins 48 and 49, these are summed
into the receive and transmit audio paths via an attenuator and summing network.

Signals BUT_IN_0 to 4 are sent in a sequence. Once a switch is activated (depressed) the
microprocessor determines which one according to the cross-point of the switch involved
(BUT_IN_x with BUT_OUT_y). The combination XY gives the address of the pressed button.
The functions of the keys, other than the PTT, are dealer programmable and are stored in the
memory of the radio.

4.1.4. Microprocessor Clock and Beat Shift Function

The Microprocessor clock frequency (15.36MHz) is controlled by XT2 and associated
components.
The Beat Shift function allows a small change to be made to the clock frequency. This may
move unwanted spurious signals away from a wanted receive frequency.
Q3 when switched on by the BEAT_SHIFT signal from the Microprocessor by-passes C96 so
changing the clock frequency controlled by XT2.

x

TX_PWR
RX_FIL
FREQ_CON

Transmit Power Level

Tuning voltage for the front end filters
VCXO fine tuning

A fixed DC voltage is applied to pins 1, 4 & 9 of IC9. According to the data sent by the
microprocessor to IC9, via the serial data link, the dc voltage at the corresponding output pins
5,2 & 3 is set to the required level.
Pin 2 is the reference for the power control loop on the RF Board and sets the TX output power.
The output at pin 3 is the tuning voltage for the RF filters in the receiver on the RF Board, this
varies with the receive frequency.
The voltage at pin 9 is the fine tuning voltage for the Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator
reference (VCXO) on the RF Board. When the radio is aligned, fine tuning of some parameters
can be done with the help of the Radio Performance Facility in the software. One of those
parameters is the radios centre frequency. Programming the FREQ_CON signal allows the
centre frequency to be accurately adjusted.

4.2. AUDIO AND TONE SIGNALLING CIRCUITS

The majority of the functionality concerned with Audio and Signalling is accomplished within the
CMX7041Audio Processor (IC3). Some external op-amps also provide buffering and filtering.
The CMX7041 performs simultaneous processing of sub-audio and in-band signalling and
audio-band processing (including frequency inversion scrambling, companding and pre- or deemphasis). Other features include a complete FFSK/MSK modem for packetised or free-format
data, two Auxiliary ADC channels with four selectable inputs and up to four auxiliary DAC
interfaces.
The Audio processor is clocked by Crystal XT4 at 19.2 MHz.
Functionality may be divided into Transmit and Receive paths.
Each of those paths may be further sub-divided into:
Voice audio
Tone Signalling audio

4.2.1. Received Voice Audio Processing

The unfiltered audio from the discriminator on the RF Board enters the Controller board via pin 7
of CON1. This audio is amplified (in IC6A) and FLAT_AUDIO_2 enters IC3 (CMX7041) at pin
16. Here it is further amplified and high-pass filtered to remove the sub-tones at frequencies
below 260Hz.
IC6A R194 R192 R195 C168 C217 C107 C218 IC3
The filtered audio signal leaves IC3 at pin 26 (Audio Out), de-emphasis is applied by R176 &
C208 (AUDIO_IN). The audio is buffered by IC6B before reaching pin 24 of IC9 (AUDIO_IN).
This is where the volume control takes place. According the pressing of switches SW20 &
SW21 (HT7x2, HT7x3) or SW18 & SW19 (HT7x5, HT7x6), the microprocessor sends the
required data to the multiplying D/A (IC9) to set the audio level at pin 23 (AUDIO_OUT1).
R176 C208 IC6B C209 R42 R67 R66 R49 C222 C13 C87
IC9
Volume controlled audio is then further amplified and then applied to either the internal or the
external Loudspeaker.
HT700 series 2.0 uses two Audio Power amplifiers (IC7 & IC8), one for the external and one for
the internal Loudspeaker. IC7 and IC8 are single audio amplifiers. The single-ended audio
output for the internal speaker is taken from pin10 (O/P) of IC8.The amplified audio reach the
internal loudspeaker via L3-C31 and pin 2 of connector CNT03. Muting of this signal is achieved
by transistor Q3. The AUDIO_MUTE signal from the Microprocessor silences the audio from the
internal speaker.
R19 C32 IC8 L3 C31 R45 Q6 Q3

The single-ended audio output for the external speaker is taken from pin10 (O/P) of IC7. The
amplified audio reaches the external loudspeaker via L2-C19 and pin 5 of connector ACC_CON.

Muting of this signal is achieved by transistor Q47. The MUTE signal from the Microprocessor
silences the audio from the external speaker.
R13 C26 IC7 L2 C19 R4 Q48 Q47

4.2.2. Received Tone Processing

IC3 also contain the necessary circuitry to low-pass filter and detect sub-tones or Digitally
Coded Squelch data (CTCSS or DCS) in the incoming audio at pin 16. Once a valid sub-tone or
DSC data (corresponding to the programming) is detected, IC3 communicates that to the
microprocessor via the serial data link, which in turn un-mutes the RX audio.
IC3 IC5

4.2.3. Transmit Audio Processing

Voice from the internal microphone enters the board via pin 1 of CNT03. The external
microphone signals (EXT_MIC) enters the unit via pin 6 of ACC_CON. Microphone signals are
enabled by switching transistor Q39 under the control of microprocessor signal MIC_EN. D7 is
a limiter to prevent excessively large signals from overloading the Microphone input.
Q39 R138 R53 C105 C102 C104 C98 L25 L34 D7 R52
The microphone audio (now labelled MIC_IN) is amplified and filtered in IC6D and re-named
MIC_PROC before reaching IC3 at pin 21 (MIC). The CMX7041 is capable of high-pass filtering
the incoming audio (to avoid interference between the low frequency content of the voice and
the locally generated sub-tones) and also applying pre-emphasis (6dB/octave), and to limit the
level of the voice to prevent over deviation. Processed audio leaves the IC3 at pin 23 (MOD1).
IC6D C121 C17 C18 R85 R86 R68 IC3
Levelled audio is further filtered and buffered by IC14B (MOD_AUDIO).
IC14B R175 R178 R179 R43 R183 R197 C205 C206
C207 C212
Voice from IC14B (MOD_AUDIO) is applied to IC9 pin 21 where the level is set to provide the
correct deviation, as programmed by the microprocessor, and leaves the IC at pin 22 via R16,
R17 & C26 to be added to tones used for selective calling. The main modulating signal is
MOD_OUT1 and leaves the board via pin 12 of CON1 (MOD_OUT1) to modulate the TX VCO.
IC9 R18 R40 R26 R27 C16
IC102 and its associated components form a band-pass filter tuned around 800Hz, where the
voice has the maximum energy content. The audio is amplified and full wave rectified by D222,
so producing a DC signal (VOX) proportional to the voice level from the microphone. This signal
is measured by the Microprocessor and the decision whether to put the radio into TX Mode is
taken, depending on the programmed VOX threshold level.

The whole VOX detector circuit is enabled by Q21 under control of the microprocessor signal
VOX_EN.

4.2.4. Transmit Tone Processing

IC3 contains the circuits necessary to generate the sub-tones or DCS data (CTCSS or DCS).
The microprocessor controls IC3, via the serial data link, to produce the programmed sub-tone
or data stream. They leave IC3 via pin 24 (MOD2). The sub-tones are then further low pass
filtered and buffered by IC14a (MOD_TONE.)
IC3 IC14a R172 R107 R108 R109 R115 R191 R116 C204
C139 C135 C174 C187 C192
The sub-tones from IC14 (MOD_TONE) enter IC9 at pin 13. IC9 is an M62364 8 Channel
Multiplying D/A Converter with serial data input. Data is stored in an internal register and is used
to convert the voltages applied to the input pins to new voltages at the output pins.
The microprocessor sets the level out of IC9 via the serial data link. The output from IC9 (pin 14
via R35), is the sub-tone modulating signal (MOD_OUT2). This leaves the board at pin 34 of
CON1 to modulate the VCXO reference oscillator. This technique is called two-point
modulation, and is very powerful because the low frequencies, which require a relatively low
level of modulation, modulate the reference oscillator, and are inside the natural frequency of
the loop of the PLL, whist the higher frequencies (over 260Hz) modulate directly the VCO.
Those frequencies are outside the natural frequency of the loop, so the loop filter does not
attenuate the modulation.
IC9 R40 R18
The tones inside the audio band are generated by IC9. The DC voltage applied to pin 12 is
converted to a tone by varying the applied serial data. This tone is attenuated and added to the
voice signal via R32, R33 and C23to produce the combined MOD_OUT1 as described above.
IC9 R32 R33 C23

4.3.

SYNTHESIZER SECTION
The synthesizer section comprises a MB15E03SL synthesiser IC, a reference oscillator
(VCXO), a loop filter, a Transmit VCO, a Receive VCO, the supply switching to enable either
of the VCOs, and a common output buffer amplifier.
The Synthesiser IC and VCXO run from a 3V supply derived from the +5V supply by R262
and D29.
IC13 VCXO D29 C265 R262 R129 R213
A technique used in this radio is the dual point, or cross point method, of modulation of the
Reference Oscillator (TCXO). This permits modulation of low frequencies (such as CTCSS) on
to the carrier, that otherwise would require an extremely low frequency modulation of the
VCO, which in turn would require a narrow loop bandwidth that is not consistent with low
acquiring time, needed for fast scanning.

Figure 4.1 Synthesizer Block Diagram

The MB15E03 chip contains the Phase Comparator, the Reference Divider, the Prescaler
Divider, the 11 bit Programmable Divider, and the 7 bit Swallow Divider.
The phase comparator output takes the form of two signals, P and R, the proper combination
of these signals is the source of the tuning voltage for the VCO (VCO_TUNE). Because the
signals P & R are in the range of 0 to 3V, and the varicaps diodes need a larger voltage to
cover the whole band, a voltage doubler is used to produce a 12V rail.

4.3.1. Reference Oscillator

The Reference Frequency for the Synthesiser is divided down from a stable Voltage
Controlled Crystal Oscillator (VCXO) running at 15.3 MHz. The exact frequency of the VCXO
may be set with the control voltage FREQ_CON as described in Section 4.1.6.
The VCXO output is applied to the Synthesiser IC at pin 1 via R212 and C67. A tap is also
taken to feed the frequency tripler for the 2nd Local Oscillator.
The VCXO is also modulated by low frequency Tone signals. These are buffered in IC8b and
then summed together with the fine tuning signal FREQ_CON in IC8a. The resulting signal is
applied to the VCON input of the VCXO.

Voltage Doubler.
Q30, Q31 and associated components form an astable oscillator, Q32, 33 & 34 form a buffer

the pump is to convert levels between 0-3V from IC13 to levels between 0-12V. Transistors
Q11, 27, 28 & 29 are switched on and off by signals P & R, the combined signal is taken from
the collectors of Q28 and Q29 and then fed to the Loop Filter.

The loop filter takes the variable pulse width outputs from the Voltage Pump and low pass
filters them to give a DC voltage to control the selected VCO (VCO_TUNE). A Test Point (TP)
is provided via R53 for the monitoring of the VCO control voltage.

Transmit VCO

Q4 (Q502_MB) and its associated circuits form the TX local oscillator, the resonant circuit is
composed of L40, C5, C19, C42, C162, C250, TC2 (L511, C45, C529, C533, C534 _MB) and
the varicaps diodes D3 & D15 (D502 _MB). The variable capacitance of these diodes tunes the
oscillator to the correct frequency as determined by the synthesizer.
The VCO control voltage from the synthesizer (VCO_TUNE) is applied to D3 (D502_MB); this is
the main tuning element and determines the frequency of oscillation. Modulation for voice and
in-band tones is applied to D15; this frequency modulates the RF output. Low frequency tone
modulation is applied directly to the Reference Oscillator (VCXO).

Depending on the state of TXB+ and RXB+, the signal from the buffer Q35 is also routed either
via PIN diode D9 to Q10 to feed the RX mixer (RX mode), or via D12 to Q43 to drive the RF
power amplifier chain (TX Mode).
RX Mode.
When the radio is in Rx mode, RXB+ voltage is present, but TXB+ is not. Consequently Q10 is
powered and D9 conducts, providing a low impedance path to the base of Q10. Q10 amplifies
and buffers the RX Local Oscillator signal providing an output at TX_LO.
Since TXB+ is absent, D12 is in an off condition, so there is high impedance to the base of
Q43, and Q43 is also not powered. Consequently there is no output at TX_LO.

In TX mode the opposite conditions exist; TXB+ is present and RXB+ is not. So Q43 is powered
and Q10 is off. Consequently there is a signal at TX_LO but not at RX_LO.

Antenna Transmit/Receive switching circuit.

In the transmit mode TXB+ is applied to the diodes D6-D21 (D6, D701 & D710 _MB) via
R33/L15 (R705/L711 _MB), forward biasing both diodes into an "on", conducting, state. The
series diode D6 provides a low impedance path from the PA to the antenna. The shunt diode(s)
D21 (D701-D710 _MB) shorts the receiver input, RX_IN, protecting the Low Noise Transistor
Q5 from damage.
In the receive mode, neither of the diodes are conducting, both are off, creating a low
impedance path between the antenna (ANT), and receiver input, (RX_IN) and a high impedance
path to the PA.

Second IF Circuit (FM IF IC)

The next stages are contained mostly within the FM IF IC, IC1.
Second IF Mixer
The second IF mixer is where the first IF (46.35 MHz) and second LO (45.9MHz from the RX
Second LO Tripler) are mixed to produce a 450 kHz second IF signal. This circuit is entirely
contained within IC1.
Second IF Filter
The next stage is the second IF filter at 450kHz, where the signal passes from pin 3 of IC1 and
is applied to a ceramic filter, CF3 or CF4, to eliminate adjacent signals outside the second IF
pass band.
Depending on the channel spacing that has been programmed, one of two 450 kHz ceramic IF
filters is selected. In case of 25 kHz spacing the 2nd IF is routed through filter CF3, and if 12.5
kHz spacing is required then CF4 is selected. Switching is achieved by Q22, D23 & D24 under
the control of the W/N signal from the microprocessor.

Second IF Amplifier
The filtered 2ND IF is then re-applied to IC1 at pin5 where it is amplified and limited. This circuit
is entirely contained within IC501.
Demodulator circuits
Still inside IC1 the IF signal is fed to a quadrature detector where it is converted to audio. The
major part of the detector is the ceramic resonator CD601. The Q of this device may be
changed to compensate for the differing deviation levels when switching between wide and
narrow channel spacing. This is achieved by Q20, R613 and C8.The recovered audio level is
also attenuated when in Wide mode by R13/Q19. All of this switching is controlled by the W/N
signal provided by the Controller Board.

A signal strength output, (RSSI) is provided from IC1 pin 12, and is fed to the Controller Board.

4.4.10.

Noise Squelch Detector

When a very weak or no RF signal is received, the noise at frequencies above 4kHz is quite
high, however, as the received signal strength increases this high frequency noise starts to drop
rapidly due to the characteristics of the FM receiver. The level of this high frequency noise is
taken as a measure of the signal strength and used to un-mute (un-squelch) the audio.
The noise around 16 kHz is band-pass filtered by L14, C125, C111, C167, L30 and amplified in
IC1 (pins 8 & 7) and then by transistor Q2. The noise is full-wave rectified by D14 & D22 and the
proportional DC signal is routed via R90 to the Controller Board (SQL), where the mute
(squelch) decision is taken.

The power for this stage is provided from the Battery via the fuse and the PA current detection
circuit. This current detection circuit measures the current taken by the final stage and uses it to
control the DC bias point for the Driver and Final PA stages.
In order to compensate for variations in gain across the whole band, as well as changing Battery
voltage, comparator (IC9a) monitors the current drawn by the Final PA stage and adjusts the
bias voltage. IC9a sums in the TX_PWR control voltage that sets the final output power.
A sample of the current drawn by Q6 is taken by R34, amplified by IC9B and compared in IC9A
against a voltage, TX_PWR, generated by the Control Board, this being the reference to
establish the desired output power. Any difference is amplified and a correction voltage is
applied to the gates of Q8 and Q6 via R103 & R245 (R245A). The control of both MOSFETs

gives a very wide control range, so even in the event of an open/short antenna the final stage is

PA Switching Circuit.

Q1 & Q9 form a switch that inhibits the final two stages of the PA in receive mode. This ensures
that no noise or spurious signals are generated in the receive mode. If TXB+ is not present then
Q9 is off, Q1 is consequently conducting and grounds the gates of Q8 and Q6 (no bias). Since
both MOSFETs are off any signal that may leak from the RX_LO cannot be amplified and fed
to the antenna or fed back to the RX input. It also prevents any noise being generated by the
PA Transistors which may degrade receive sensitivity.

Main Regulator

The main power feed to the rest of the radio comes via the electronic switch Q9 and the +5V
regulator placed in the Control Board. When SW15 or SW26 (depends on the model) is
pressed, a signal KEY_IN is applied to regulator IC11 via R127-R123 and D28. Enable voltage
at pin 3 of IC11 switch it ON and regulated +5V comes out at pin 5. Transistor Q41 is switched

4.7. MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS

4.7.1.

Switches.

There are three switches on the RF Board, SW1 to SW3; they are a normal SPST type.
As discussed in section 4.1.2, SW1 and SW3 are connected to the microprocessor as part of a
matrix. The function of these buttons can be programmed, as required, by the dealer.
SW3 is not programmable; it grounds the PTT line to the microprocessor. The microprocessor
then takes the required action to place the radio into Transmit Mode.
SW1 to SW3 in RF board. SW1 to SW21 and SW25 & SW26 in Control

4.7.2.

Indicators.

On the top of the radio, is an indicator containing two LEDs. The lightning of those LEDs is
combined to indicate the following states: Transmit, Receive, Scan, Busy, Low Battery &
SelCall. LED diodes D2 and D27 are driven by the signals TX_LED and RX_LED from the
microprocessor. Colours RED, GREEN or YELLOW can be shown by either illuminating the
LEDs individually or together.

4.7.3.

Volume Control.

The volume control is done by electronically by the microprocessor. According the pressing of
switches SW20 & SW21 (HT7x2, HT7x3) or SW18 & SW19 (HT7x5, HT7x6), the microprocessor sends the required data to the multiplying D/A (IC9) to set the audio level at pin 23
(AUDIO_OUT1).The level of the audio is then regulated electronically by IC9. This way it is
possible to setup, by the programming of the radio, parameters such as the minimum volume,
the volume offset between tones and audio, etc.
SW18 & SW19 or SW20 & SW21 IC9

4.7.4.

Battery Monitoring

The battery for the HT700 series 2 radios contains an IC that monitors the number of charge
cycles that the battery has been exposed to. This information is sent to the microprocessor via
CN301 pin 3, the BAT_COM line, CON3 pin 18 via R3 and R4.

DISASSEMBLY
Note: Be sure to switch off the transceiver's power before disassembling it.

5.1. Attaching and Removing the Battery Pack

Instructions for attaching and removing the Battery pack are given in the Operators Manual.

5.2. Disassembling the radio

Figure 5.1 Exploded View

1. Remove everything from top of the radio: the knob IM6, the antenna and the dust cap IM7.
The D-Ring P2 inside IM6 should come out with the knob, if not, remove it and keep it safe.
2. On top of the battery connector assembly IM12 is a cushion, remove it carefully. This stuck
cushion will be probably damaged so you have to order it in your spare parts stock.
3. Between the three battery contacts C9 are two TORX 6 screws S1, remove them taking care
not to loose the rubber rings R11.
4. Gently remove the assembly and gasket R8.
5. From the bottom of the radio, remove two TORX 8 screws S3/7, taking care not to lose the
rubber rings R10.

6. Attach the antenna to the radio and use it to gently pull up the ASSY A (Frame, Main) until it
is free from the Cabinet (plastic housing). Be careful not to loose the sealing gasket R5.
IF THE CONTROL-PCB OR THE RF-PCB NEED TO BE REMOVED THEN:
7. Using long nose pliers unscrew nuts C1 (channel switch) and C2 (antenna).
8. Remove the two Philips screws S6, holding the Top Cover IM3, gently remove it from the
Frame chassis (ASSY A).
9. Remove the two Philips screws S4 holding the accessory connector board, gently remove it
from the ACC_CON on the Control Board PCB.
10. Now you are free to remove the several Philips screws S2 securing both boards from the
metal chassis.
11. In radios with a display, leave it in place.

5.3.

Reassembling the radio

The procedure is the reverse of disassembly. Just have at hand some good quality silicon
grease because some should be applied around gaskets R5, R7, R9 and R10 to help the watertightness of the unit.

5.4. Visual and Mechanical Inspection.

Check that the gasket seal R5 around the top is not displaced.
Check that all the knobs are tight and correctly located.
In the case of radios with keypads, check that all keys operate correctly, and that no key is
depressed, or trapped under the front cover.
Press all other buttons (including the PTT) and check that you can hear the distinctive click of
the micro-switches.
Operate the Channel Selector Switch and ensure that the fixing nut is tight.
Check that the antenna connector is not loose.
Check that the three battery contact springs move smoothly and are not corroded.
IMPORTANT NOTE.
To ensure that the radio is in a working state and ready to return to service after disassembly,
once the radio has been reassembled, it is mandatory to check its functionality.
