Summer Youth Art Classes Registration

Location: Youth Activities Director’s office in Old Gym by Centennial Hall


Classes are limited to 20 students per session. Registration is on a 1st come basis. Students must
have graduated from Kindergarden this last year. You will be notified of class acceptance by
phone. We will be making art so please wear old clothes or paint shirt. Classes will start
promptly at 9:00 A.M. and let out at 12:00 noon. Classes will only be in the morning this year,
all classes are only a one day lesson --- except photography.
Subject content of classes offered:
Proposed classes:

1. Using clay as a transfer medium,


students will explore shapes, stencils, textures
and color on a slab of clay to create a mono print.
The printing plate will then be used to create a
colorful fired clay vessel. One session.
2. Ceramic masks- students will learn about the
history of masks. Design and decorate a mask
CLAY June 1st and June 3rd with paint and bling.
1. Learn to draw your favorite animal. Shading and
lights and darks.
2. Portrait drawing – draw half of your favorite movie
Pencil Drawing techniques star or recording star or family member. Learn how
June 8th and June 10th to draw features of the face.
1. Learn the basics of color theory with oil pastels.
Learn the basics of composition and elements of
Oil Pastels design.
June 15th and June 17th 2. Paint the northern lights on black velour.

1. Students will learn the basics of drawing shapes,


expressive line and shading with colored pencils. The
student will then try to draw and express how they
feel about music visually in the style of Wassily
Kandinsky.
2. Shrinky Dink colored pencil refrigerator magnets.
COLORED PENCIL DRAWINGS – Students will use photographs to learn shading and
June 22nd and June 24th color blending to create miniature works of art.
Students will use gelatin to create mono printed
pictures.
Mono printing June 29th
1. This painting class will start out with drawing objects
from nature. Students will explore the objects and
draw them with different scales. Colored Hot Glue
and watercolors will be used to create a stained glass
effect on paper.
WATERCOLOR PAINTING 2. Learn to use stencils and transparencies to create
July 6th and 8th watercolor paintings using aerial perspective.
ACRYLIC PAINTING 1. Students will explore the painting styles of acrylic
July 13th and July 15th paints by painting on a photograph.
2. Using acrylic paints on a special liquid, students will
explore the patterns and fun of marbling. Pages can
be used in scrapbooking or journaling.
Learn the basics of digital photography and computer
adjustments. Photos will be eligible for entry at the county
fair in 4-H or open show competition. Must have a digital
PHOTOGRAPHY camera. 1. Basic camera functions 2. Composition/lighting

Selections for county fair 6. Mounting. [Class provides the
June 2, June 16th, June 30, and reprinting of 10 - 4 x 6 photos and 1- 8 x 10 photograph
July 14th including in the material fees .]

Learn the basics of digital photography and computer adjustments. Photos will be
eligible for county fair in 4-H or open show competition. Must have a digital camera.

6. Mounting. The reprinting of 10 - 4 x 6 photos and 1- 8 x 10 photograph is included.
Each of the first 4 session s will include time for a walk about and actual photo taking.
Students-- Must have a digital camera.

There will be a $10.00 registration fee per student per class for tuition or $110.50 for all 13
classes.

The Photography class is $35.00 [4 sessions]. The Valentine Youth Planning Commission and
Turner Foundation Grant are co-funding the tuition for classes and supplies. At the end of the
classes, all remaining the supplies will be sent home with the students for continuing exploration
in art.
