A large number of people are consuming packaged food because it has become a matter
of convenience, pleases the taste buds and fills your stomach. Also, it is important to note the
quality of packaging used for these products and whether additives are used or not to increase
their shelf life. For example, dairy products like milk that come in tetra packs come without any
additives and due to no contact with air, it remains fresh for a long period of time. The ready-toeat food products are especially laden with preservatives and can have excess oil in the form of
trans fats, which can be a threat to health. I dont really advocate bakery products, whether they
are packaged or not. The problem with canned or processed food is that they have excessive
salt or sugar. Cooking at home is always a healthy option. For example, even simply eating dalchawal is a far healtheir option over junk food. What one needs to do is little bit of time management
and planning. We should stick to those food items that we are genetically used to such as Indian
food cooked by traditional methods.

-2jungles on the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh had been earmarked for a tiger project.
It meant people from 84 villages would have to be evacuated. I reached there on a very dramatic
day, says Sindhu. A project officer impounded 132 cows of the Adivasi villagers of Koha. For
three days he did not free them; one cow died. The Adivasis stood looking at their cows helplessly.
That day I decided to take up their cause. Adivasis are primitive tribal groups which live in utter
poverty, have low levels of literacy and health and are a result of severe feud since 18th century.
Sindhutai fought for the rehabilitation of the 84 villages. In the course of her agitation, she
met Chhedilal Gupta, the then minister of forests. He agreed that the villagers ought not to be
displaced before the government had made appropriate arrangements at alternatives sites.

Battered on all four sides by sea waves, its strong walls yet standing intact and 40 ft. high
even at full tide, is the majestic island fortress of Murud-Janjira. Never conquered by an enemy for
over 350 years since its construction by Malik Ambar (15th C.A.D.) an Abyssinian regent of the
Ahmednagar kings, Murud-Janjira is probably the only impregnable fort on the 720 km. Maharashtra
coastline.
Neither the Portuguese nor, the British could subjugate the fort. And the Marathas despite
their repeated attempts failed to subdue the Siddi power. Discover Murud-Janjira the impregnable
island fortress of the Siddis, who grew and prospered within its walls down the centuries. Stately
mansions, now ruined - lay here, protected by huge cannons, placed strategically on its many
rounded bastions.
A short boat-ride transports you from the port town Murud famed for its beach, to Murud-
-3Janjira, where time stands still. Murud is connected to Mumbai 165 kms away, by regular buses.
Roha, on the Mumbai-Mangalore coastal Railway is the nearest rail head. A more adventurous
and funfilled route would be to go by launch from Mumbai Ferry Wharf to Rewas 90 minutes away,
and thence by bus via Alibag and Chaul.

The flying school claims she is the youngest to paraglide solo in the country. Payal Lodha is
in standard six and she is just 12 years old. She is an extraordinary kid. She was among the
seven students who just finished their pilots introductory course. More specifically, she is the
youngest qualified paraglider in the country.
When the Pune Mirror contacted Anita Deshpande of Temple pilots Institute based in Kotharud,
Mahatma Society, she said that it was unlikely that there was anyone else younger than Payal to
have achieved this feat. Temple pilot Flying Institute has been around for 13 years.
Payal was delighted beyond belief when she was cleared for her first solo flight. She could
hardly believe that her moment of Truth had arrived. She was going to fly, all by herself, alone in
the sky. She flew with confidence. Following the instructions for turns immaculately, made a
perfect approach and a perfect landing.
During the debriefing session, Payal explained how she managed her fear. She counseled
herself not to be afraid and focus on what was needed to be done.

It was the most beautiful bike and it belonged to Ranjans uncle. A magic, kingfisher-blue
with a matching pannier and two smart rear-view mirrors. A real beauty of a bike and the first of
its kind in the neighbourhood. Ranjan had become a prince among us boys.
We clustered around him in class the next day, eager for details.
Eighty kilometers to a litre and rides like a dream, said Ranjan, swinging his lanky legs
over the back of his chair. Vrooooooom..... Such power, yar (friend).
Ranjans uncle had come down from Bombay, riding the new motorbike. He was staying for
three weeks. Three glorious weeks, and every afternoon when he slept, we could ogle at the
blue wonder to our hearts content. Sometimes Ranjan managed to sneak out his uncles red
helmet. We would wear it in turn and sit on the bike, hands itching to turn on the ignition and be
off. In the evenings, we watched Ranjan go out for a spin with his uncle and our stomachs
churned with envy.
Ranjan had always a stylist, now he began to walk around like the worlds greatest. When
we cycled home from school, he would crouch over the handlebars, squinting his eyes and
you knew he dreamed of the blue bike.
