Apart from restaurant, the banquet and lodge with 10 rooms are also available. Lodge has
recently been in operation with few customers. The owner has recently started the banquet
business with its first pre-wedding event conducted on 27th Ashad 2073.
Ownership and Family Support
The restaurant is operating under single ownership. The owner of the restaurant is Mr. Sujan
Tamang (Lopchan) originally from Chitwan. After completing his SLC, he came to Kathmandu
and resided at Kalanki for further studies. He did his bachelor study on Hotel management and
internship at Malaysia. There he was highly influenced by the hotel management practices and
services. In addition, he had helped in organizing few weddings prior to the establishment of his
restaurants. Presently, he is doing his Masters in Sociology and also works full time to manage
the operations of the restaurant.
The family members of the owner are supporting his business. For initial capital, financial help
was provided by his father Mr. Chin B. Lopchan and brother. Family members are also involved
in managing the business. Sister in law of the owner manages the kitchen department and father
administers the accounting department. The owner manages and supervises the overall operation
of the whole business from dealing with suppliers to the services offered to the final customers.
Registration
In order to start the business, it needs to be registered and get license to operate. According to
Section 3 of the Private Firm Registration Act, 2014, the sole proprietorship business institution
needs to be registered either in Department of Cottage and Rural Industry (if it is the case of
cottage and rural industry), Department of Commerce (if the firm is related to commerce) and in
the Department of Industry for any other kind of industries. Therefore, the restaurant along with
the banquet and lodge is registered under Department of commerce. For tax purpose the business
is registered at the Inland Revenue Office, Ministry of finance. Hotel Makalu and Chef's Home
Restaurant and Banquet is also registered in the Nagarjung Municipality. The documents
required to start the business were application, copy of citizenship of the owner, copy of land
owner certificate, map, company registration certificate, pan registration and license to operate.
Legal Hassel
The difficulty was faced by the owner for the registration of the restaurant. The registration
process took a long time for completion. It was also difficult for the owner to legally transfer the
location of the company from bus restaurant to train restaurant. In addition, the owner had faced
the problem for the tax payment due to the slow processing and system interruption in the Tax
Office.
Idea to start the business
The idea to start the restaurant with a train theme came up in owners mind after seeing an old
burned bus while walking in the Kalanki streets. Originally, owner had a thought to make kitchen
inside the bus but later through brainstorming he thought of opening a fully fledged restaurant.
He planned the arrangements, bought a scrap bus, designed it into a restaurant, registered it,
hired staffs and on 2070 the bus restaurant started its operations. The business was growing and
the owner had the further planning to open a branch at CTC mall. The preparation was on
progress but due to catastrophic earthquake on 2072 Baishak 12, the bus collapsed, as it was
placed above the third floor of the house. This caused a huge financial loss. But still he had the
hope and passion to rebuild the restaurant in future.
Later, when the aftershocks of earthquake gradually lowered, the owner again started to plan, to
reconstruct the restaurant with same registration and license of the bus restaurant. But this time,
the location of the restaurant was changed. During the preparation, the owner again had to face
the problem of economic blockade due to which the opening of the restaurant was delayed for 5
month. Finally the restaurant with different and new theme of train was established and it is
doing well in the market at current.
Uniqueness
The main USP of the restaurant is the idea of dinning inside a train. Along with the idea there
are many other services which are unique and differentiate it from other competitors. They are:
of mouth, facebook and media attention. There is a facebook page of the restaurant where the
feedbacks of the customers have helped in promotion. Apart from it, media has paid attention to
the uniqueness of the restaurant and have published various articles. The online newspaper
Setopati and Kantipur has the coverage of the restaurant. Also, the facebook page Routine
of Nepal Bandha has also reported about the restaurants.
At present, the owner is planning to introduce an online service and online marketing. He had a
new idea of marketing through social works but did not want to revel it.
Pricing Strategy
Restaurants utilize various pricing tactics. The pricing strategy of the restaurant is value pricing
where the benefit or value of the product is increased to delight the customers at the reasonable
price. The examples are the complimentary welcome drinks, popcorns, gifts and twist on taste of
the foods. For, the casual foods such as momo and chowmin which are easily available, the rates
are a bit lower than the competitors in order to penetrate the market. The high class five star
foods are priced on a normal range so as to attract and retain the customers such as business man
and staffs. Package pricing is also available for the different package of foods and services
offered. Apart from food, the fishing charges are high as it is a unique service provided to the
customers. For some dishes, the good, better and best pricing strategy are adopted where three
style of same dish are offered on the menu e.g. pizza.
Competitors
The competitor of the restaurant within the kalanki area consists primarily of several local
established restaurants. The major competitor is Cozy Foodland as it has already established its
market. At present, the customers of Cozy are also attracted towards the Kathmandu Metro Train
restaurant. The owner wants to alter those Cozys customers into Kathmandu Metro Trains
customers and retain them as well. The other competitors are: Pakhsala, Sadikshya restaurant and
lodge, Delicious Momo centre, Peaceful Resturant and many other small coffee house and
bakery cafes. Compared to them, this restaurant is newly established and is increasing its market
where as other restaurants has already occupied its market at current. But still the Kathmandu
Train Restaurant has a comparative advantage over other restaurants. The comparative advantage
is a well structured restaurant with much uniqueness in serving customers with additional
entertainment facility available.
Improvements and Future plans
The restaurant is still working to improve the decorations and services. At present, most of the
customer demands for an AC. However, instead of AC facility, the restaurant is providing fans
for them. The restaurant is planning to accomplish the customer demand of AC in near future.
In addition, the owner is making an effort to improve the breakfast of the restaurant. There is also
an after service communication with the customers to take feedbacks. This would help in the
improvement of the restaurant.
The future plan of the owner is to extend the business by open branches with new theme in each
part. As per the owner, Nepalese Food has not got an international market so, in long run he
wants to go for an international market.
