JustificationforProgram:
Oftentimesthereisadeclineinacademicachievementoverthesummermonths,most
oftenintheareaofreading(Johnston,2014).Thiscanbeknownassummerdrift(orslide)
whichisthelossofreadingcomprehensionandachievementskills(Whittingham&Rickman,
2015).Recentstudieshaveshownthatsummerreadingprogramsareaneffectivewayto
reducetheeffectsofsummersetbackonreadingachievement(Johnston,2014).Kidswhotake
partintheirlocallibraryssummerreadingprogramsignificantlyimprovetheirreadingskills
(Fiore&Roman,2010).Thisalsoallowsmoretimeatthebeginningoftheschoolyearto
concentrateonnewmaterialinsteadofmanydaysofreviewtopics(Johnston,2014).
Summerreadingprogramsarealsoanantidoteforlearningloss(Fiore&Roman,2010).
Insteadoflosingknowledgeandskillsduringthesummermonths,kidswhoattendreading
programsactuallyshowgains.Therehasbeenaslowdowninsummerdriftduetospecific
summerreadingprogramsthataddressmotivationthroughstudentchoice,studentownership,
andscaffolding(Whittingham&Rickman,2015).Scaffoldingissupportgiventostudentsduring
thelearningprocesswhichincludesactivitiessuchasbooktalks,vocabularydevelopment,
readingladders,bookgroups,andotherthingsprovidingsupportforindependentreading.The
mostsuccessfulslowdownofsummerdrifthappenswiththecombinationofmatchingstudent
interestsandprovidingcontinuousscaffolding.Withsupportfromthelibrarystaffandthe
childrensfamilies,kidswillcontinuetomakeprogressintheirreadingabilities,whileenjoying
theprogram.Summerreadingprogramsalsogobeyondthepreventionofsummersetback
(Johnston,2014).Theypromoteadesiretoreadsimplyforpleasure.Summerreading
participantshavemorepositiveattitudestowardsreadingforfunathome.
Specificallyforthisagerangeofmiddleschoolstudents,itcanbetoughtogettheminto
thelibraryduringsummer(Brewer,2016).Thatiswhyoursummerreadingprogramappealsto
aspecificgroupofreluctantreaders,sportsfans.Thesekidswouldratherbeonthefield
insteadofreadingabook.Bycombiningtheirloveofsportswithreading,wehopetosparktheir
interest.Byofferingincentivesofsportsoptionsandfoodoptions,wehopetoalsoappealto
nonsportsfansaswell.Toearnthemedals,theyshouldbereadingaboutdifferentnonfiction
booksaboutsports,theOlympicsandsportsfiction.However,byreadingfreechoicebooks,all
