Margaret Keanes Biography
Born in 1927 in Nashville, Tennessee, artist Margaret Keane would eventually meet and
marry Walter Keane in the mid-1950s. Having created distinctive paintings of large-eyed
figures over the years, Margaret was dismayed to find that Walter was taking credit for her
work. Over time he also became abusive, and Keane eventually divorced him. She
revealed herself as the creative force behind the Keane paintings in 1970 and later won a
court case in which she sued her ex-husband for defamation. Her story has been detailed
in the 2014 film Big Eyes, with actress Amy Adams portraying Margaret.
The artist known as Margaret Keane was born Peggy Doris Hawkins in Nashville,
Tennessee, on September 15, 1927. She immersed herself in art from an early age and
had a penchant for creating characters with large, looming eyes. She would eventually go
on to attend art schools in both her native state and New York before marrying Frank
Ulbrich and having a daughter, Jane.
