1 OVERVIEW

The following steps will guide the installation of Nokia 3410 SDK 1.0. The installation contains a phone
emulator, JavaTM class libraries, APIs (including Nokia UI API), documentation and the uninstaller.

2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Basic Requirements:

- Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (SP 6), Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP 2) or Windows XP
- Internet connection (for the registration procedure)
- Java 2 SDK version 1.3.1 or 1.4.1
- a 600 MHz or faster processor
- 96 MB RAM minimum, 128 MB recommended
- 11 MB disk space.

Optional Requirements:

1) Nokia Developer's Suite for J2METM integrated with Borland JBuilder

processor speed, RAM and hard disk space requirements as for JBuilder

2) Nokia Developer's Suite for J2METM integrated with Sun ForteTM for JavaTM (recently announced as Sun ONE
Studio)

processor speed, RAM and hard disk space requirements as for Forte for Java

3) Nokia Developer's Suite for J2METM installed as a standalone application.

3 OPTIONAL PRE-INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Borland JBuilder together with JBuilder MobileSet. (See Borland documentation for more information.)
2. Sun Forte for Java. To utilize the KVM-debugging capabilities of Sun Forte forJava, J2METM Wireless
Toolkit 1.0.3 or later must be installed.
3. Network connection is needed to complete the installation if the user does not have a Forum Nokia
account and/or a serial number for this product.
4. Nokia Developer’s Suite for J2METM integrated with Borland JBuilder, with Sun Forte for Java, or as a
standalone application.

Note: During the installation, you must use the serial number you have received from Forum Nokia. You cannot
use a serial number received by another user.

The installation program describes how to get the serial number for this product by using your current
username if the serial number is not available yet. The serial number will be sent to the e-mail address
designated in your Forum Nokia account.

Note. If you are using an IBM T2x-series laptop and Windows 2000, you may need to modify your hardware
acceleration settings. If the Nokia Developer's Suite for J2METM install process fails, right-click on Windows
desktop and select Properties. Select Settings | Advanced | Troubleshooting and set hardware acceleration to
“Disable all but basic accelerations” (see Figure 1). This problem has been identified at least with IBM laptop
models T20 and T21.

4 INSTALLATION STEPS
Before downloading the software, you must either log in as a Forum Nokia member or register (free of charge)
at Forum Nokia. If you have received the software to be installed in some other way and have not yet registered
as a Forum Nokia member, you should register before or during the installation procedure.

During the installation, you can submit your current Forum Nokia username and password, and the
corresponding serial number for the product will then be sent to the e-mail address specified in your Forum
Nokia account. The product serial number can also be retrieved from the Tools and SDK section at
www.forum.nokia.com.

Note. If you already have a Forum Nokia account and have received the serial number, installation can be done
without a network connection.

Start the installation by running the installation executable (setup.exe).

Step 1. Introduction panel. This panel displays general information about the software to be installed. Press the
Next button to continue.

Step 2. End-user software agreement. Read the terms of the license agreement. Accept the terms by selecting
the appropriate check box, and then press the Next button to proceed with the installation.

Step 3. Welcome panel.


a. If the Forum Nokia username or the product’s serial number is not available, leave both the username field
and the serial number field empty, and press the Next button. Go to step 4.
b. If both the Forum Nokia username and the correct product serial number are available, fill in both fields and
press the Next button. Go to step 8.

Step 4. Proxy Settings panel. If the installation program succeeds in automatically detecting the current proxy
settings, these settings are suggested for use. Alternatively, you can select either No proxy or Use proxy settings
defined below and specify the desired settings. If your proxy needs a username and password, type them in the
appropriate fields. Note that the registration procedure requires an Internet connection. Press the Next
button to continue.

Step 5. Registration panel.


a. If you have a Forum Nokia account: Fill in your Forum Nokia username and password, and press the Next
button. You will be connected to the Forum Nokia server, and the serial number will be sent to the e-mail
address specified in your Forum Nokia account.
b. If you do NOT have a Forum Nokia account: Press the Register button, and then register as a Forum Nokia
member using your Web browser
( www.forum.nokia.com/reg_form ). After typing in your new Forum Nokia username and password, press the
Next button to continue with the installation.

Step 6. Check your e-mail for the serial number. You must access your e-mail account using a separate
program. You cannot check your e-mail within the installation program.

Step 7. Licensing panel. Type in the product serial number and press the Next button.

Step 8. Choose an installation directory panel. Nokia 3410 SDK 1.0 will be installed in the recommended
directory. You can accept the directory or press the Browse… button to select the directory where the SDK will
be installed. Alternatively, you can enter the directory in the directory path field. After the location has been
accepted, press the Next button.

Step 9. Pre-Installation Summary panel. Check that the installation locations are correct, and then press the
Install button. The installation will be completed.

5 UNINSTALLATION
Navigate the Windows Start menu by choosing
Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Nokia 3410 SDK 1.0
and then selecting the application from the list and press the “Change/Remove” button

or double-click the Uninstaller.exe file in


<user_home_directory>\.Nokia\Uninstallers\Nokia 3410 SDK 1.0\

6 GETTING STARTED
The MIDP SDK needs to be configured before the use. When integrated with JBuilder & MobileSet, the MIDP
SDK is configured as follows:

- Select Configure JDKs from JBuilder ‘s Tools menu.


- Change the current JDK’s home path or add a new JDK.
The default JDK home path is
…\Nokia\Devices\Nokia_3410_SDK_1_0
- If necessary, change the name of the JDK (e.g. into “3410 JDK”).
- Check that your current project is using this new JDK: Select Project Properties from JBuilder’s Project
menu.
- Select Tools | Nokia Developer’s Suite for J2METM | Configure Emulator… and select the newly installed
emulator from the ‘Select SDK/Emulator’ pull-down menu
(“Nokia 3410 SDK 1.0”). Finally, press the Ok button.

Now your MIDP SDK is ready for application development. For more information, see the user’s guides for your
IDE and Nokia Developer’s Suite for J2METM and Forum Nokia website www.forum.nokia.com .

7 TROUBLESHOOTING
If the following error message appears at the beginning of the installation, please check that your Java Runtime
Environment (JRETM) is properly installed and set. Java 2 SDK (including JRE) can be downloaded from Sun
website.
