This written task relates to the literature part of the English A Language and literature
course. I chose to add a dialogue between Hale and Tituba to the end of The Crucible.
The reason behind my choice is that I particularly find these characters interesting. Hale
is definitely not a flat character and his trust on the trials changes throughout the play.
5The only time he gets to have a dialogue with Tituba is at the beginning of the play,
which is before the change of his mind. I thought that although he would never be able to
make it up for Proctor and tell his feelings to him, he could apologize and even confess to
Tituba, whom he had treated unfairly. This dialogue, in a way, reflects the change in
Hales character as compared to the beginning of the play.
10I tried to avoid contemporary vocabulary that belongs to 21 st century, since the play takes
place in Salem society of 17th century. It was challenging that because Tituba does not
speak proper English, I had to consciously make grammatical errors while writing the
part of Tituba.
I tried to create the atmosphere that Tituba and Hale not only talk to each other, but also
15seem to be in a monologue at some points. At first sight, Hale has the intention to make
Tituba forgive him, but throughout the dialogue, the audience finds out that he actually
needs to forgive himself.

(This dialogue takes place at the very end of the play. Proctor is hanged. Tituba is freed
and she is ready to go back to Barbados. Hale requests to talk to her when she gets out of
25jail.)

Hale: It was wrong on my side, Tituba. I was mistaken when I stole away your innocence
from you in eyes of men and women of Salem.
Tituba: No, no sir. I did not have no innocence for you to steal. I am Tituba. Tituba has
nothing.

30Hale: You have your God Tituba. God will correct all wrong doings done to you. God
sees what I have done to you, what Mr. Parris has done to you and what Salem has made
of you. We are all paying. I suffer from my misjudgment I had the day I used Gods name
against you. I suffer every night when I go to bed, every time I pray, and every time I see
John Proctors newborn child. But, Tituba, you poor soul, I beg you to believe me when I
35say that I have never meant to harm the innocent and protect the unfairly strong. I was
blinded by my desire to draw away the Devil from wherever he wandered and I looked
without consideration.
Tituba: God will not help Tituba. He must not. Tituba betrayed his trust. Tituba lied.
Goody Nurse, Sarah Good all killed because Tituba sold them.
40Hale: We, who were meant to speak for God, spoke for the Devil instead. We were
mistaken to think that accusations made by threatened, suppressed people of Salem
would lead us to Devil. I used Gods blessings as a threat upon you, Tituba. I saw,
everyone saw that you were the one who needed Gods blessing the most and we used
you to make ourselves believe in the Devil we created.
45Tituba: I want God bless me! I work for Mr Parris. Mr Parris puts me below the ground;
he is mean man, no gentle man. Girls want me make spells. But Mr Hale, Tituba is no

witch. I want Gods light upon my dark self! You scared Tituba and then you give hope
that Tituba can be free if I say I see Devil.
Hale: ( talking to himself) I believed it myself, as well! I believed I saved souls. Little
50had I known that the books, those heavy books I carried with me, did not tell me about
how vengeful even the ones who seem closest to God can be and that there was not only
one path to honor God or to be good. I was devastated when I went to John Proctors
house and he couldnt prove his royalty to church. However, I was more devastated when
he proved his royalty to his friends and his reputation, his honor. I was devastated,
55because he was not the man who tracked with Devil and who betrayed the church.
Tituba: You are no bad man, Mr Hale. You do what you do for God. God sees it.
Hale: (desperately) God! God did not help me see the truth behind little girls deceitful
cries. I didnt realize how vengeance was the real Devil walked amongst us. I trusted
Parris when he told me about Betty. I thought the child was sick and cursed. I wanted to
60help her. I did not doubt a word Abigail, Mr Parris, or you had said. Because you told me
what I wanted to believe in. I wanted to believe Devil could be suppressed as we
suppressed people.
Tituba: I had to! Tituba has no outlet; Tituba is trapped within the little windows of Mr
Parriss dark house. Mr Parris thinks I am no woman, I am no person; but I am. I
65sometimes wanted Mr Parris kill. When you said Devil got inside you, I thought maybe
He did, because Tituba is not bad person, Mr Hale. Maybe it was the Devil told me kill
Parris.

Hale: Devil is inside everyone Tituba. Devil has been walking around in Salem long
before girls got bewitched. Devil was in Salem when gold and money and estate became
70church talk. He was here when Salem thought he was in the books.
Tituba: (almost as if she is in a hurry) I dont know where Devil is. I do not dare to know.
I am as free as I can be. I go to Barbados where my spells are nothing but tradition.
Hale: I wish I was free as well. I will be cursed by my misjudgment until I die. I will be
followed by the ghosts of Proctor and Giles Corey. Although it did not make me innocent
75when I left the court, I was at the least conscious. I will suffer forever from not having
courage to listen to what my senses told me when I first talked to Proctor. I am telling
these to you Tituba, because I forced you to falsely confess and now I want to truly
confess to my mistakes that can never be corrected but only be admitted.
